I'm not totally sure if this is the right way to submit a request for practice/pointers, but I was just wondering about the different types of role playing... You mentioned a Naruto role play, of which I have not RPd, and a Vampire RP, and I was wondering if styles differ between separate role plays?

They can differ. For instance, in a Naruto RP, there are different types of skills and attacks, separated into three catagories: Ninjutsu, Taijutsu, and Genjutsu. Ninjutsu being skills such as replacing one's body with logs, physical attacks that require energy to be used, even up to the point of controlling the elements around someone. Taijutsu is punches, kicks, physical attacks that don't require a whole lot of energy. Genjutsu is illusions, things that are not real.

(I am not sure if you already knew this or not, but I decided to state it anyway for preparation.)

Depending on the skill type you use, will depend on how you play that out. For example:

Ninjutsu:
Arina looked at the shinobi in front of her. He was at least a foot taller than her, but that would not pose much of a problem. She had tricks up her sleeve that this man did not know about. Without waiting another moment, she began doing hand seals that would bring lightning down on the shinobi, the hand seals being done as quick as the lightning itself.

A moment later, the male shinobi moved away as quickly as he could, barely getting grazed by the lightning.

Arina let out a few pants. She had just recently learned that ninjutsu, so it still took a lot out of her. She was growing weary, and the fight had just started. The technique used a lot of her chakra. As soon as she saw the male approach, she moved to her left, but felt a sharp pain in her arm. He had gotten her with a kunai. She hadn't moved quick enough, and it was due to her weariness.

(A result of using Ninjutsu would be weariness. Depending on the attack being used would depend on how much chakra, energy, is used. In the case of the example above, the character used a jutsu that was still a bit more than she could handle, even though she had learned it. It used up a lot of her chakra, therefor she was weaker because of weariness. This will affect her for the rest of the battle. Ninjutsu uses chakra to harm someone. The next example will be a different situation.)

Taijutsu:
Arina quickly moved to her left and, just as the kunoichi, or female ninja, stumbled forward, came up behind her. Without waiting another second, her fist came in contact with the back of the kunoichi's skull, making her fall face-first on the ground. The kunoichi was weary from using so much ninjutsu, but Arina was fresh. All she was using was taijutsu.

As soon as her attacker got up, Arina delivered a roundhouse kick, sending her flying into a nearby building. She felt ready to fight all day.

(Taijutsu is a fighting style in which, as long as the user has enough stamina, can keep going. Or as long as they are not too injured. In the case of the above example, Arina was using soley taijutsu wheras her attacker was using ninjutsu. Arina was more prepared for a long fight. The following example is a different example.)

Genjutsu:
Arina peered out from behind a tree as she heard noises. There were people coming. It sounded like there was at least two, unless it was one person with an animal. Once they came into view, Arina noted it was one person and a dog. A shinobi from the enemy village.

Performing hand signals, she grabbed a flute at her belt. She brought it up to her lips and began to play. She opened her eyes to watch the shinobi as he attempted to find the source of the music, but failing as the sound seemed to be coming from everywhere, he took a guarded stance.

He looked around when he saw the scenery change. What was going on? Where had he suddenly vanished to? And then he saw something headed his way. It was a kunai. Unable to move in time, he felt it pierce him in the stomach. This went on for what felt like hours, until finally the illusion ended. He hit the ground when it ended, however, there were no marks on him signalling he had just been attacked. It had all been an illusion, playing tricks on his mind, mentally exhausting him.

(Genjutsu does not physically attack someone. Depending on the technique, much like Ninjutsu, it can drain the user as well. The effects on the person the attack is used against could last for hours afterwards, years afterwards, and it could even lead to death, though no physical signs would be shown.)

Even vampire role-plays differ from one another. If you were to take a traditional vampire role-play, the time of day would affect how the role-play was done, seeing as vampires cannot go out in the light of day. Depending on whether or not other supernatural aspects were brought into it, would determine how it went. For instance, if magic was brought into what, what effects would it have on the user, what would it do to the other person? What are the psychological effects?

I am not sure how much help this was, but hopefully it helped some. biggrin

Thanks, that was very helpful! I guess what I was originally trying to ask was if the style of writing changes per genre. For example, some people post short, discreet actions in active role plays and others only enter in mainly dialogue. I've seen others who enter in detailed accounts and even added pictures every time. Some try to keep it more real-life, seeming to bring alot of themselves into their character. I was curious if those styles were different because of the topic of the role play...? But I guess it depends on the circumstances. Still, this helped bunches! Thank you, again.

(This is my first time playing around with format... is it okay? I'm also wondering as to what Post Action is...)

As far as that goes, it all depends on the role-players. Some suck at using detail, so will have shorter posts, mostly dialogue. Others, myself included, can be pretty good with detail and will have long posts. A really good role-player will be able to use everything around their character, and their senses, in a post. It helps other role-players to respond when there is a longer post. The picture will help remind other players what your character looks like so you don't have to mention it every other post or they don't have to go back to your profile. Even adding the characters name at the top of the post helps.

Most good role-players automatically put themselves into their characters. It helps them play them and it will make it seem more realistic, because they are so into the character. I know myself, I can tend to get overboard a bit with my characters. I can get so into them, that I will feel whatever they are feeling, and even in real life, sometimes act like that character if I had just used it.

It all depends on the role-player. And yes, it is okay for you to play around with format. Post action is just things that can be added to your post to make it look nicer, though the actions don't really make it look nicer. The Post Style does though.
