Has anyone else besides me read this series by Anne McCaffrey? If not, I'll make an attempt to explain it. Rather complex though, so it'll be somewhat difficult. And I'll probably leave stuff out.
Anyway, something was up with Earth (never found out what), and a new planet suitable for human habitation had to be found. Eventually, one was found in the Rukbat sector (wherever that is). The planet was named Pern, and colonists were soon brought to settle there. They didn't know about the Thread though. Thread is a parasite, silvery-grey in colour that looks like... thread. It falls like rain for fifty years, with two hundred year Intervals between. After the first Pass (period of Thread falling), the people settled there realised that they had to do something about it. They already knew that Thread could be destroyed by fire. They just needed a way of effectively bringing the fire to the Thread. That's what the fire lizards were for. Originally small reptiles closely resembling dragons, they were genetically modified and got much bigger. Large enough to be ridden by up to three people, eventually. The next time Thread fell, they were used to combat it. These dragons shared special mental bonds with their riders, one that would remain for life. If the rider died, the dragon would commit suicide.
And that's all I can think of at the moment. I'll probably remember more later. Maybe I'll explain what's going on with Lessa with the long Interval... But that's for another day. For now, ciao. Remember to read these!

I see the resemblance to Paolini's work with Eragon then...
I started reading Anne McCaffery so long ago but recall thinking it was too long so stopped...
The one you're explaining sounds interesting though... *sighs as she adds the book to her ever-growing mass that is her to-read pile*

Book? Nope, I'm just explaining the basic story behind the place. Though it is outlined in much more detail in First Fall. I'll explain Dragonflight eventually though.

I've only read a few books by McCaffrey[sp?] but I love her work. I'm trying to get the whole series but I have to save up for a trip to South Carlina and there are so many books I want to buy.
