Imagine someone took Jello and gave it life, but more of a mucousy Jello. Without leaving any slimy residue.

Females have legs, males have more of a snakish lower body, but both have arms in their natural forms. No mouths, only two large eyes that take up most of the face. They speak through vibrating the mucous membranes, creating their language.

All Ferogan ships are the result of numerous Ferogans fusing together, permanently. So while a Ferogan Dreadnought still requires a crew, it's still a living organism. You could kill off the crew, and the ship could still function, though only basic maneuvering and weapon's firing. That's what made them so dangerous. you couldn't just kill the crew. You had to destroy the entire ship. Even pieces were deadly.

Even fighters were like that. The Ferogan Dart and Rake were fighters, light and heavy, respectively. The Rake had a pilot, the Dart did not.

Fusion is always permanent. Also, they reproduce by fusing together two pseudopods pulled from their body. Kind of like an amoeba. They build up excess body mass, then extract it and fuse it with the body mass of another. The result is a Ferogan kid, only takes six T-months to build the mass. The fusion is only a few seconds. After the fusion, in a few minutes, BOOM! kid.

Ferogans have no sex drive, though they do have the ability to experience love and romance. Ferogans have mated for life on occasion. And there was once a Ferogan that fell for a Se-combeian.

They just understand sex, seeing as how they reproduce.

Most of their tech (about 80%) was reverse engineered from Se-combeian tech. They never had the chance to reverse engineer human tech, so they never learned how to build missiles, lasers, grasers, or actual shields. If they use it, it tends to be purchased. UEF Tech, due to newer and more powerful enemies, his a little harder to reverse engineer. However, because it's a technological trade, the UEF did send engineers to show the Ferogans how to build shields and energy weapons. Nukes and weapons-grade EMP are beyond them.

Ferogan ship armor is augmented with a mucousy gel that softens kinetic blows. Plasma weaponry can burn it, but the gel just covers it, though the entire thing is now slightly thinner. Fighters don't have it, only stations and ships do. They also actually created a better inertial dampener and hyperdrive than the UEF and Se-combeians, so the Hyperdrive on the Unity is actually Ferogan tech, though the inertial dampeners are a hybrid of UEF and Ferogan tech.

However, because they had an entire galaxy to themselves, their sensor suites are the best around. Only Big Brother (the sensor suite on the [i]Unity[/i] is better. Their analyzing tech, such as soil samples, medical, and material became the basis for what's being used now. So the Ferogans do contribute.

Hell, the Ferogan's economy, once the Republic realized their exploration tech was the best, is now based entirely on exploration and colonization technology. They're actually pretty damned rich because of it. A lot of the UEF Colonization companies were bought out by Ferogan companies. The largest Ferogan company and the largest UEF company are professional rivals, though the UEF likes to help the smaller companies out, to help the UEF try and one up the Republic.
