i'm entering a poetry slam and i'm
stuck on what my subject should be.
any ideas?

Well, if you want to form an abstract idea for freeform poetry, try listening to music a lot. Nothing with lyrics, or you may be tempted to plaigerize*?. Try for instrumentals, or ambient music. Write what the music inspires. A lot of music by Akira Yamaoka can be influentual in writing, because his music is so artistic.
If you're going for more of a rhyming approach, try looking at art for inspiration. It can be just as mentally stimulating as a composure of music.
