For awhile now I wanted to start a new character... and finally I did.

What I have no is the basic outline of what I want I guess. I will post it and it is up for feedback, pointers, things you think I should change/add/clarify.. everything that will help me make it a better character.

First off though I want to say I am basing it around an idea I had long ago so first I will post the idea of the Monestary/Order the character is from so you can better understand the character proper and where I am coming from hopefully...

The grammar and spelling are going to be bad cause I only have late nights to work on it thanks to my internship so be kind!

Please hold all comments till all info is posted! Thanks!

Ordo lux lucis quod vita (The Order of Light and life.. somtimes just refered to as The Order by it's members).

They are an ancient order that believes that there are no gods and man's fate is in it's own hands. The existance of demons/angles/whatever is explained that they are all very powerful creatures and the like, not minions of God's and the like. While non-humans can sometimes be useful allies, the order will work with them only to further the human agenda and rarely trusts them. They instill this distrust into their recruits. They believe that man has to learn to depend on it's own strengths to survive and use any tool nessecary. Weapons, magic, whatever.

Now in the past, hundreds of years ago, they were more involved in the flow of things. They would actively go to try and change the way events were going, all to what they saw would help futher man's cause. For awhile it worked but they kept butting heads with the so called "Spiritual beings" and religous orders which lead to a war. Not huge in the overall scheme of things but big enough for them to decide to work more in the background then right out for everyone to see.

Now how they get new members is still being worked on but I have it right now that they send people out into the world to watch and observe. Find families or people with similar beliefs and get them to send their children to the monestary to train and learn and become part of the order. These children, usually very young start off as Foundlings... kids found and brought in. They learn the history and core beliefs of the order... the mantras and whatnot. No actual magic or anything just the facts.

Then they become apprentices (but spelt right) and start by learning to summon the fire of life (energy tapped from the universe itself and controlled using their own willpower) which the order says is the physical representation of the human spirit. This is done by painting a set of runes on the skin. These help them summon this arcane energy. They learn to do very very basic things with it before they can move on. Also the runes are painted on so when the lessons are over they can be washed off.

Then they move up to accepted.. the ruins are tattoed on permanently and they are then taught to use the fire for practical uses.. defense... offense.. battle.. survival. The sort of thing they would need to survive in the real world. When they start getting the grasp of that and can start doing more complicated things a final set of ruins are tattooed on the forehead binding them to the order and they become full a full brother or sister.

As for what type of monestary it is typicall like the western ones.. long sermons, chants, robes... vows of chastity, poverity... even sometimes silence to help their studies advance without distractions or whatever. The only thing that would be considered more eastern would be learning to fight, channeling your energy and using it... that I am still looking into more.

As far as weapons go they use mostly swords, staves, daggers, fist weapons like spiked brass kunckle things, polearms. They find what they are good at and learn that weapon.

Using the fire of life they have to open themselves to the energy of the universe, letting it slowly trickle in to not be overwhelmed. They start out with basic stuff, the spells or effects becoming greater as they move on until they have to stop or open themselves to a large torrent of power and cast one final spell before they are overwhelemed and slip into unconciousness. Each brother or sister can learn limited amount of spells from each level. When they learn them they have to use them to the best of their abilities. Now it isn't impossible to learn new skills it is just time consuming and most people don't bother. It involves unlearning one or all of the abilities through intense meditation and study and then learning the new skill all over again. It can takes months or even years to do so.

They levels os each spells are as follow:
First level - Instituo:
This is the first level. The user begings to open themselves to the unvierse's energy and begins to shape it. Mostly it has outward effects that can be used, but there are some internal uses. First level is additive, using engery to give inanimate objects or the user certain effects cause he knows himself and making something like a stick glow with energy doesn't involve a lot of knowledge about how sticks work. It is a stick.

Second level - Requiro
Second level consists of using the energy to add or take away something from objects or lifeforms to preform certain effects. To do this though requires a greater understanding of how these objects or lifeforms work and how you would go about giving them the desired effect. You can do things like make a sword that little bit sharper or make someone's skin tougher, give them more engery. Things like that. 10% chance that it'll backfire.

Third level- Partum
Third level is sort of gathering the general energy of the universe around them to create... wings of fire for limited flight based off the knowledge of knowing how a birds wings work and how they would need to be shaped based on the size of proportion of the user.. etc...Or using the energy to create a fireball knowing how fire works and reacts with materials and people. Fire burns people because such and such chemical reactions take place. 25% chance of Backlash/Failure.

Fourth level- Provectus partum
Fourth again is a variation of the third but a little more complex. More chances to go worng and blow up in your face. 60% chance that any spell from this class will spin out of control and blow up on him.

Fifth level- Cautum
Fifth and final level is basically the "Ultimate spells" adding or removing energy to create or destroy. Generally avoided due to having just as much negitive effect on the caster as it does on the intended target.

Name: Devon Whilts aka Brother Devon.
Age: 27
Birthdate: June 4th 1982
Home: He has lived with the order most of his life and since leaving he is not sure where the monestary was. Since then he has moved from place to place living off the charity of others.
Birthplace: Barton
Highet: Six foot even
Weight: One hundred and eighty-five lbs
Hair Colour: Dark brown
Eye colour: Cobalt blue
Hobbies: Studying the scrolls and tomes he pilfered from the order before he left.
Likes: People, life, bettering himself to help those around him
Dislike: Some Non-Humans, Alochol, vows of chastity

Description: At a first glance Devon looks very much out of place. His hair is a little over shoulder length and looks like it was combed with his fingers. He is normally seen with a beard, this is due to his upbringing more then anything. Now and then he will try and trim it or shave it but it rarely lasts and eventually grows back to it's messy state. While is hair and beard look messy he is far from unclean as he prides himself on washing every change he gets, even if it is in a local river or pond. He knows getting dirty is something that will always happen he rarely stays dirty for long. His clothes are mismatched and mostly gathered from the people he has met. It consists of faded jeans, brightly coloured tshirts that are usually oranges, yellows or even reds at times. The only thing of his clothing that looks out of place is a white leather jacket, a cherished object that he will never get rid of.

Personality/Quirks: Devon is not stupid, but can sometimes be a little too trusting of people. While he is suspicious of anyone that appears to be non-human he gnerally belives that there is a sense of fellowship between all humans, male and female, and will generally trust them more then he would anyone other 'creatures' he encounters. He is always studying, not only his tomes but everything around he as he hasn't spent much time in the world outside the monestary. Because of this a lot of things are still new to him so he asks a lot of questions, sometimes an annoying amount. Like all at the monestary he has taken vows but belives that some are needed while others are simply foolish. He takes to heart his vows of sobriety and poverty, while the first thing he wished to be rid of was his vow of chastity. He believes that all should become close enjoying in both emotional and physical fellowship of all kinds.

Equipment:

Backpack: This carries a variety of items which includes scrolls, tomes, books and any other important documents he could get his hands on before leaving the monestary. He also carries bandages, herbs and other pollutices, a compas, matches and a few candles. There are also some hard buiscits and dried meats for when food is hard to come by.

The Tomes, books, scrolls: Some of these are simple histories that explain things about the order, how it go to be as it is now, while others are about the power the order wields. He took this to continue his studies so that while he was away from the order he would not grow stagnent and keep learning what had to be learned.

Water Skin: You never know when it will come in handy to have some clean, refreshing water on hand.

Bootknife: A crude and simple steel bootknife. Can be used for a multitude of purposes.

Sword: He carries with him a simple looking short sword that remind most people of the Roman Gladius Hispaniensis . It has a solid grip, provided by a knobbed wodden hilt with ridges for the fingers, covered in worn leather. The blade has a length of 68cm, giving the overall sword a length of 85cm. Sword width is 5cm and it weighs about 900 grams.

Powers:
He can summon the fire of life (energy tapped from the universe itself, not actual fire, and controlled using their own willpower) which the order says is the physical representation of the human spirit. This is done due to the ruins tattooed on his skin from his shoulders down to his feet as well as learning certain chants or spells to help bring about the desired effects. When he opens himself to the energy it starts out with a small amount and progressing from one level to another. It starts out with small spells that have little use in battle but can still be practical and move up to more and more dangerous things. After casting a spell he must move to the next level up, trying to cast a spell of a lower level causes him damage very much akin to a bad electric shock. He can however discharge the energy and move back down to a lower level. The discharge is different for each member of the order, for him it takes of form of multicoloured discharges through his skin very much like mini fireworks (this is due mostly to a half remembered childhood memory)> While it is bright and pretty to look at this discharge would do no damage to anyone who came into contact with it, if anything it would tickle a bit. The names of each spell are a rough translation from the original texts.

Quote:

First level - Instituo:
This is the first level. The user begings to open themselves to the unvierse's energy and begins to shape it. Mostly it has outward effects that can be used, but there are some internal uses. First level is additive, using engery to give inanimate objects or the user certain effects cause he knows himself and making something like a stick glow with energy doesn't involve a lot of knowledge about how sticks work. It is a stick. He has learned four first level spells. They are technically the same spell though but with external and internal uses.

External:
Path of light: The path of light is a simple spell that allows the user to infuse energy into an object causing it to give off a green glow very much like glow sticks used for cave explording and the like. This ability is useful for it provides not only light, put a light source that can be passed off for someone to use, as long as they stay in the area of the caster. If they get to far away the effects disapate and the light is lost. It is a very soothing light and does help people in it's glow to calm ever so slightly. This power is activated with a simple chant of “Lux lucis meus via”

Path of creation: This allows the user to infuse simple lifeforms such as plants or insects with energy causing them to speed up on their own natural paths. It can't cause the lifeforms to grow larger then they would, or change what they would do so it requires little knowledge of how the organisim normally works. It would simply do things like cause maggots to change into flies within seconds, or cause an apple tree to bear fruit. Activated with a chant of “Permissum lemma niteo”

Internal:
Light of peace: This is an internal variation of the Path of light. The user channles the energy inwards, not actually calming them but filling them and providing an adreneline like rush, allowing them to focus without tiring for a short period of time. Activated with a chant of “Videlicet meus mens”

Creation of self: This is the internal use of Path of creation. It allows the user to turn the energy inward and cause his body to help along it's own natural processes. It is very limited in use though to things like, helping the body digest to prevent or easy stomach aches, causing cuts and wounds to start to heal and stop bleeding. It would not fully heal the wounds though and any agitation might cause them to start to bleed just as bad as before. Activated by a chant of “Tribuo somes valetudo “

Quote:

Second level - Requiro
Second level consists of using the energy to add or take away something from objects or lifeforms to preform certain effects. To do this though requires a greater understanding of how these objects or lifeforms work and how you would go about giving them the desired effect. Most have both a positive and negative use, but not always do they learn both. 10% chance that it'll backfire and deal damage to the caster instead of preforming the desired effect.

Positive:

Weapon Enhancement: Advances the usefulness of a weapon for a set amount of time, either his own or anothers. By studying the use of weapons and how they are effective (swords as useful cause they are sharp, they are sharpened by filing away layers of the edge... staffs hurt cause the woood is hard, wood is make of these molecules to to make it harder.. etc). After it is over the weapon reverts back to it's original state. Only really useful on bladed and blunt weapons. Not good for “modern weapondry”, things with too many moving parts like guns. Activated with a chant of “Succurro telum opus”

Determination of Man: This allows him to toughen the skin of himself or more importantly another person. It took years of studying basic biology at the monestary to understant how to do this. It allows the skin to become harder which helps against punches, blows from blunt weapons and can even prevent cuts from bladed weapons. This does not mean he is impervious to danger of course. Small knives and dull-ish swords will probably hurt but not cut but anything sharper and with moderate use of force can still cut the skin. Same with with punches and blunt weapons, a few hits might be an annoyance but more and more hits and greater strengths put into the blow can do damage still. Has a limited effect time. Activated with a chant of “Tribuo somes vires”

Negative:

Weapon Degradation: This is the negative of Weapon Enhancement, the flip side. As the weapon enhancement causes a wespons effectiveness to increase this would cause it to decrease. Swords become dull, staves weak and brittle for a set time limit. After it is over the weapon reverts back to it's original state. Again Only really useful on bladed and blunt weapons. Not good for “modern weapondry”, things with too many moving parts like guns. Activated with a chant of “Plumbeus mucro”

Quote:

Third level- Partum
Third level is sort of gathering the general energy of the universe around them to create. Needs a greater knowledge of how things work. 25% chance of Backlash/Failure.

Wings of Glory: As he was always jealous of how birds could fly and people couldn't Devon studied them closely which allowed him to learn Wings of Glory. This allows his to use the fire of life to create a set of energy based wings which allow him limited flight for a set amount of time. Good for quick escapes or reach something out of your grasp. Activated with a chant of “Pennae quod palma”

Spirit Blaze: This allows him to gather the energy into a sphere that he can launch at an object or target. When it comes into contact with something it explodes into a roaring fire that covers a limited area, or if it hits a person is somewhat difficult to put out. Activated with a chant of “Aestuo incendia intus”

Spirit Shield: This creates an energy shield, which looks like the Roman Scutumus. It last a limited time but can be disipated with enough blows or even one very strong blow. Still very useful in a tight spot.

Quote:

Fourth level- Provectus partum
Fourth again is a variation of the third but a little more complex. More chances to go worng and blow up in your face. 60% chance that any spell from this class will spin out of control and blow up on him.

Fire imps: Required that the caster knows Spirit Blaze to use. Uses the energy that would normally go into the spirit blaze to instead create a small creature of fire. These creatures have limited autonmy, the caster tells them the desired effect he wants done and it goes about doing. It's 'intelligence' though is an imprint of the caster's own mind so whatever it does is something that he would have done himself. They last a limited time and being magical in nature are tough to put out due to the amount of energy being put into it's creation. Activated with a chant of “Ortus incendia creatura”

Firewall: Required that the caster knows Spirit Blaze to use. It is as the name implies a wall of fire. It can be up to 10 feet high and either stretch out for 10 feet, or create a circle around someone as long as it does not out strech the 10 foot limit. Again it is very tough to put out this fire as a lot of energy has gone into creating it. Lasts for a limited time. Activated with a chant of “Aestuo perspicuus parietis incendia”

Quote:

Fifth level- Cautum
Fifth and final level is basically the "Ultimate spells" adding or removing energy to create or destroy. Generally avoided due to having just as much negitive effect on the caster as it does on the intended targets.

The Void: This is an is an AoE that cuts off him and whatever is in this area to the energy of the universe. Simple life like plants, bugs and etc die off leaving an area in the ground that will be dead for months... take a long time to reconnect... and more complex things like people get weak, go into despair and depression.. feel like they are totally alone and basically feel total and utter emptiness. The closer they are to him the stronger the effects are and the longer it takes to recover. The down side? He is dead center in ground zero and feels the effects more then anyone else. It has a huge down side, but can be helpful in a last resort.. make his attackers so sad and whatnot they forget about him... hopefully giving an ally a chance to rush in and pull his sorry a** out of there.
Or at most delay the inevitable conclusion of his life or his ultimate beating and causing the attacker a hell of a lot of greif. Activated with a chant of “Vita inritus per haud affectus”

History:
Devon was born to the Whilts family on June 4th, 1982, and lead a relatively happy life while he was with them. His parents, Troy and Felicia Whilts, were very outspoken people that were not content with the way things were going with the world. While they were not against the other races that seemed to inhabit the world they lived in, they did think that human survivaly and advacement should come before anything else. They also did not belive in most religions finding all the facts presented to be too contradictory. This brought them to the order's attention and they were approached by one of the order's public members. After many discusions they decided that Devon would be sent to the monestary to learn and help further the cause of humanity's survival. Devon's last memory of his parents was when they took him to a fireworks display, this was the day before they sent him away at the age of five. Devon had become a Foundling of the Ordo lux lucis quod vita, who take in anyone male or female, as long as they are human. The order believes that there are no gods and man's fate is in it's own hands. The existance of demons, angles and other raceses are explained away as “They are all very powerful creatures and the like, not minions of any God'. From his first day at the monestary the lessons began. He was drilled in history, philosphy, whatever they thought he would need. These lessons but all the daily chores, meditation sessions and sermons continued for years. It wasn't until he was 12 that he moved up to the rank of apprentice, learning to open himself to the energy of the universe and shape it with his will. Though at this stage he was only taught very basic things and the runes that were used to summon the energy were painted on so they could be washed off when the lessons were over. He was also taught basic self deffence and started to train with weapons till it was decided the sword would best suit him. It was during this period in his life at the monestary that he started to really notice how removed the order was from the rest of the world and he would talk with his fellow apprentices and some of his teachers about it, only to get the same old answers. It was to prevent the order from clashing with other races and people with different ideas, as this had caused a few wars in the distant past. Eventually he stopped asking questions but they were always there in the back of his mind. He continued with his lessons and grew close to some of his brothers and sisters in the order but nothing ever happened due to the enforced vows of chastity, another thing that bugged him very much. When he turned 20 he had advanced in his studies to the point where he joined the rank of the Accepted. This was when the ruins used to connect a brother or sister to the energies of the universe, the fire of life they call it, were permanently tattooed on them all the way from their shoulders to their feet. He would start to be taught all the more complex spells, though it would start with minor offensive spells and work up from there. When he progressed far enough into his training he could learn one of the top level spells if he chose but this was generally discouraged as most of them had rather negative effects not only on the intended targets but the caster as well. While he chose to learn one and felt first hand it's effects he decided to never use it again unless it was a last resort and there was no other option. He was also taught to rely more on his blade then his power because you never knew when you could be cut off from the fire of life and only your weapon could save your life. He spent 7 years as an Accepted and was very close to become a full Brother, when the final tattoos that bound you to the order would be added to your forehead and cheeks, when he decided to leave. He knew the order had become far too removed from the rest of the world and made the decision to go out and travel, learn the state of things in the world at large and how the order could once again reintagrate itself into society and take on a more active role. His plans were to take what he could, go out and learn everything he could and return back to the order and give a rousing speech that would spurr them into action. Sadly somewhere along the way things went wrong and he got horridly lost. After a few days of panic he met a kind couple that took them into their house. While they were the overly religous sort he kept quiet on the order's view of 'there are no gods' out of respect. It was during a conversation with them that the notion that everything happens for a reason came up and this helped calm Devon greatly, maybe there was a reason he got lost. During his meditation that night he decided that he was lost for a purpose, to go out and learn all that he could about the world and that when he had learned what he needed to his mind would open up and show him the way back home. After staying with the couple for one more day he took his leave of them, but not before they gifted him with a white leather jacket that had belong to their son who had died the year previous and who Devon reminded them of greatly. He thanked them and vowed to cherish it always. It has been months since that day and he has gather clothing and other items from various places, living off charity of others and his own hard work as his vow of poverity does not allow him to gather wealth for himself, he uses whatever money earned to buy only the bare essentials and then gives the rest to people who need it more. While he knows his parents are probably still out there he does not actively seek them out. They were kind people and he loved them very much, probably still does, but he has a new purpose as well as a new family that he is devoted to.

By studying the use of weapons and how they are effective (swords as useful cause they are sharp, they are sharpened by filing away layers of the edge... staffs hurt cause the wood is hard, wood is make of these molecules to to make it harder.. etc). After it is over the weapon reverts back to it's original state. Only really useful on bladed and blunt weapons. Not good for “modern weaponry”, things with too many moving parts like guns. Activated with a chant of “Succurro telum opus”

Determination of Man: This allows him to toughen the skin of himself or more importantly another person. It took years of studying basic biology at the monastery to understand how to do this. It allows the skin to become harder which helps against punches, blows from blunt weapons and can even prevent cuts from bladed weapons. This does not mean he is impervious to danger of course. Small knives and dull swords will probably hurt but not cut but anything sharper and with moderate use of force can still cut the skin.

As the weapon enhancement causes a weapons effectiveness to increase this would cause it to decrease. Swords become dull, staves weak and brittle for a set time limit. After it is over the weapon reverts back to it's original state. Again Only really useful on bladed and blunt weapons. Not good for “modern weaponry”, things with too many moving parts like guns. Activated with a chant of “Plumbeus mucro”

It last a limited time but can be dissipated with enough blows or even one very strong blow. Still very useful in a tight spot.

Fourth level- Provectus partum
Fourth again is a variation of the third but a little more complex. More chances to go wrong and blow up in your face. 60% chance that any spell from this class will spin out of control and blow up on him.

Fire imps: Required that the caster knows Spirit Blaze to use. Uses the energy that would normally go into the spirit blaze to instead create a small creature of fire. These creatures have limited autonomy, the caster tells them the desired effect he wants done and it goes about doing.

It can be up to 10 feet high and either stretch out for 10 feet, or create a circle around someone as long as it does not out stretch the 10 foot limit. Again it is very tough to put out this fire as a lot of energy has gone into creating it. Lasts for a limited time. Activated with a chant of “Aestuo perspicuus parietis incendia”

Fifth level- Cautum
Fifth and final level is basically the "Ultimate spells" adding or removing energy to create or destroy. Generally avoided due to having just as much negative effect on the caster as it does on the intended targets.

Or at most delay the inevitable conclusion of his life or his ultimate beating and causing the attacker a hell of a lot of grief. Activated with a chant of “Vita inritus per haud affectus”

History:Wall of text crits for 948478373 damage
Devon was born to the Whilts family on June 4th, 1982, and lead a relatively happy life while he was with them. His parents, Troy and Felicia Whilts, were very outspoken people that were not content with the way things were going with the world. While they were not against the other races that seemed to inhabit the world they lived in, they did think that human survivability and advancement should come before anything else. They also did not believe in most religions finding all the facts presented to be too contradictory.

This brought them to the order's attention and they were approached by one of the order's public members. After many discussions they decided that Devon would be sent to the monastery to learn and help further the cause of humanity's survival. The existence of demons, angles and other races are explained away as “They are all very powerful creatures and the like, not minions of any God'.

From his first day at the monastery the lessons began. He was drilled in history, philosophy, whatever they thought he would need. These lessons but all the daily chores, meditation sessions and sermons continued for years. It wasn't until he was twelve that he moved up to the rank of apprentice, learning to open himself to the energy of the universe and shape it with his will. Though at this stage he was only taught very basic things and the runes that were used to summon the energy were painted on so they could be washed off when the lessons were over.

He was also taught basic self defense and started to train with weapons till it was decided the sword would best suit him. It was during this period in his life at the monastery that he started to really notice how removed the order was from the rest of the world and he would talk with his fellow apprentices and some of his teachers about it, only to get the same old answers.

When he turned twenty he had advanced in his studies to the point where he joined the rank of the Accepted. This was when the runes used to connect a brother or sister to the energies of the universe, the fire of life they call it, were permanently tattooed on them all the way from their shoulders to their feet.

His plans were to take what he could, go out and learn everything he could and return back to the order and give a rousing speech that would spur them into action. Sadly somewhere along the way things went wrong and he got horridly lost. After a few days of panic he met a kind couple that took them into their house. While they were the overly religious sort he kept quiet on the order's view of 'there are no gods' out of respect.

It has been months since that day and he has gather clothing and other items from various places, living off charity of others and his own hard work as his vow of poverty does not allow him to gather wealth for himself, he uses whatever money earned to buy only the bare essentials and then gives the rest to people who need it more.

While he knows his parents are probably still out there he does not actively seek them out. They were kind people and he loved them very much, probably still does, but he has a new purpose as well as a new family that he is devoted to.
