The earthquake in Chile was an 8.8 on the Richter scale. Considering it's a 1-10 scale, that's actually quite massive and destructive. It even caused a tsunami in the Pacific that required evacuations in coastal regions and Hawaii. What are your thoughts on the earthquake? I know the question on everyone's lips is in the U.S.; what can we do to help, and even, SHOULD we help?

I live on the coast. Having to evacuate was actually kind of scary... I think we should do all we can spare, but we also shouldn't break our backs. Give as much as we can give without it hurting us.

We should help. This 8.8 earthquake wasn't the strongest one in Chile. The strongest one was the 9.5 on the Richter scale in 1960. And on Sci-Fi (AKA Syfy) there was a movie called 10.5. I also heard this 8.8 earthquake affected earth's location of its axis, and shortened the day by less than a second.

It did. The tectonic plate beneath Chile shifted downwards, closer to the center of the Earth. It acted similar to a spinning ice skater bringing her arms in towards herself, making her spin faster. The change is very slight, but it's there.

Scientists calculated that the net effect of shortening of the days is on the order of microseconds. It would take a couple thousand years without any intervening changes before we noticed a minute worth of difference.
