Ceara crouched low as the dust rose, blocking all sight. She didn't need to see to know that their positions, their fear.
Faolán could smell it all and she read the scents like a book.
Her kinsman was somewhere to her right, approximately three meters north west. She was wounded and Ceara started for her when she read that other, unindentifable scent.
The creature was, despite that gaping hole, alive. It shook, shook the smoke, the earth, her very being, and started to rise once more.
Only...there was something more fragile about it's movements this time. It must be the wounds for it rose slowly and more carefully, almost as though it were running away.
She shouldn't let that happen because if it took this much effort to wound it, it would take more to kill it.
The girl groaned and something tugged.
(You're a big sister now, you have to take care of him.)
It hurt, in a way the rock hadn't. It hurt inside and--
No. This was not the time to be thinking of phantom pains or bruised girls.
Ceara glanced back, taking in the sight, and determined the others can take care of the girl. Slinging her bow behind her, her left hand slipping in her pocket to check if her knife was still pocketed, she dashed to the tree closest to her. Her arms swung her up, quickly and gracefully, until she was at eye level with the beast.
Then, she pulled out her knife, her sharp hunting knife, and jumped, plunging it into its back.

She awoke to the smell of wet blood and dried feces. She gagged at the smell, it muffled all her other senses. The air was saturated with it. She got up stifly, cracking all the dried blood on her body. She couldn't remember whose it was. She began walking towards the forest, the only place she knew. The fields were infused with different shades red. It squished against her boots, but they were already soaked in blood anyway. She passed so many bodies, she couldn't tell them apart. They were all one colour. She looked at her hands, the dark green gloves she had worn were ripped and had taken a sickely dark brown colour. Dazed, she barely noticed the arrow. Where did it come from?
Cali forced her eyes open. All she could see was dust. Her back felt like it was on fire. She slowly moved her limbs, her arm didn't seem attached to her wing-blades anymore. Gingerly she got up, straining to see. She remembered the humanoid above her. Where was it now, did she hit it? She struggled onto her knees, blood dripped from a long scar on her arm. She examined it, it ran from her elbow to her wrist...exactly where her wing blades had been. She glowered at the thought. The moment she stood, she almost fell over from the weight of the wings on her back. They had somehow reattched themselves to her back between her fall. She looked around, trying to spot anyone. Then she saw a flash of light, her eyes widened as she saw Ceara plunging towards the humanoid. The humanoid unleashed a high pitch scream as went down, crumpling under the deadly blow. Cali covered her ears and squeezed her eyes shut, the scream shattering any form of thought in her head. When the noise finally died, Cali opened her eyes again. Just as Cali was about to smile, the ground shook beneath her.
"What th-"
The soil under her feel gave way to a perfect circle. Her eyes widened as she realized what had happened. She lunged for the ledge as she fell. Cali barley hung on. Her vision was turning again and her arms were burning. Before she could even comprehend what she was doing she had leaped from the hole, shooting pain down her arms. She collapsed a few feel away, her body exhausted and dizzy. After a few calming breaths as she tired to center herself, she could feel a buzz inside of her. She couldn't tell what it was, but when she opened her eyes her vision cleared instantly, showing her many holes that had appeared everywhere.
What's going on? Did that humanoid activate something we didn't know?
