The ancient Chinese once knew that all things were made of some composite of the four basic elements. Now, scientists know that all things are made up of some composite of the 118 basic elements. Who could blame the Chinese for simplifying things? After all, the four elements certainly crop up in all kinds of places. For example, in the seasons: summer(fire), winter(water), spring(earth), and autumn(wind).
Here's some other cool sets Ive come up with: in order (fire, water, earth, wind)
States of Matter (Plasma, liquid, solid, gas) Animal Families (Reptiles, Fish/Amphibians, Mammals, Avians)
What match-ups can you come up with? propose a new one, or an alternate to one of mine.

There's also an emotion path. Which could go hand in hand with sorcery if you include it.
Things such as anger could be fire or destruction in general.
Nonchalantness, protection/defensive magics.
Generosity, healing magics.
Curiosity could be scrying magics or something of the like.
Etc. etc. I could make a complete list if you guys want.

emotion paths is good. in fact, if you check in the magic thread, the second paragraph about each element is devoted to the emotions and personality types often associated with each element, among other things.
