Well, here's a place where the styles that originated in the Ryukyu Islands (island chain south of mainland japan) can be discussed, primarily those from Okinawa, such as Isshin-Ryu, Shoto-kan, Goju-Ryu, and well...i always forget the last one...so if you know the name of the last traditional Okinawan style, let me know so i can edit this.

Many styles came from Okinawa. You're right about the ones you listed. I take Isshin Ryu which is a very interesting style. The style you're missing might be Shorin Ryu. I'll ask my sensei and get back to you on that.

Shoto-kan and Goju-Ryu are from japan not from Okinawan. originally all karate styles came from Okinawa Yes but Shoto-kan was created by Funakoshi in japan, and Goju-Ryu was Chōjun Miyagi too all in japan. the only style originally from Okinawan is Genseiryū ,Gohaku-Kai ,Isshin-ryū , Shōrei-ryū, Shuri-ryū , Tōon-ryū, Ryūei-ryū

I'd like to point out that Okinawa is part of Japan so really all of these styles are from Japan.

But I alway believed that Okinawa was just Okinawa before in became a territory of Japan ... and withing Okinawan society there is a distinct difference ... it's like the Irish and the British ... two distinct cultures ... part of the same country ...
