both. its any army of new yorkers and Irish immigrates

oh yeah tought so.... so its not an irish army then.... its an american army.... and there is nothing ...NOTHING cool about the american army.... irish soilders or not

I sorta agree with Miss. Chicken here,
although, on the topic of "New Yorker's" being "New Yorker's" - there is no such thing.
And an american can be debated to be a collection of several cultures, depending on the person.
Well, at least more so than other cultures. It is still young after all.

So... Many people in New York (Boston especially) defiantly have some Irish heritage.
Hence - this army Lieutenant Robert has kindly shared his wisdom about. : D

but - I think the IRA is the most famous of the many Irish armies.
Nevertheless, I am defiantly interested in learning about this one here. : DD

*((
By the way - I would love to see the both of you in my new "debate" in the "Irish General Support" > mini forum!
As I continue to have the pleasure of meeting all of our members, you both seem to have a really good background in Irish history.
I really hope to see you guys there! I've been wanting to have this debate a while now.

I disagree. I think Freeing the Slaves is Hella cool. That's what these guys did. They freed the slaves. Well, they had help.....

And yes, America is a melting pot. These people were Irish, but also New Yorkers, or whatever culture they fell into. There's Irish Culture, Irish American Culture, American Culture, culture by state.... Let's not worry about the semantics of it all. I, for one, am VERY Chicagoan in everything I do. Chicago culture is heavily influenced by the Italian, the Irish, and the German Immigrants who populated the city at the turn of the century.

We should probably have a discussion about what makes a culture.... If anything, just so I can get off this tangent and put it somewhere where it's a lot more relevant.

Given the time that this Army in question was started, this is actually significant. The U.S. Army would segregate people by race in this fashion, and at this point the Irish were second class citizens in America. So there is some significance to this. Also, people today are far more detached from their roots then they were back then. In other words, these people had more in common with their family in Ireland than I do with mine.

Granted, it's not significant for Irish history. Only American history. Actually, I'm starting to do Civil War re-enactments. I should probably see if this group is forming....

I forgot which General it was, but Ulyses S. Grant was told by a Confederate General that they only reason the North won was "they had more Irish on their side."

Did anyone laugh as hard as I did at the argument on the first page?
