This is just something that I had to do for writing class. I'm posting it 'cause I feel like it.
Betty shrugged her shoulders and her father led her to a man selling balloons. As her father was buying one for her, Betty looked around and noticed a little boy nearby, staring at the balloon man. His clothes were in tatters and his feet were bare. Betty supposed he felt her watching him, because he suddenly turned to look at her. She smiled at him, and he smiled back, showing a gap where one of his teeth should have been. Just then, Betty’s father handed her a large red balloon and they wandered farther into the park. Betty glanced behind her to see the boy following her, his gaze on her balloon. “Golly, I wish I had that balloon!” Thought the boy, “It’s so big and red and...big!”
When Betty’s father stopped to buy them ice cream, she turned to look at the boy. He took a few steps closer but said nothing, although she could see the yearning in his eyes when he looked at her balloon. “He probably doesn’t have any money.” Betty thought, feeling pity for the boy. Glancing at her father to make sure he wasn’t watching, she stepped forward and handed her balloon to the boy. He blinked, then reached out and took hold of the string. As Betty’s father turned back to her, the boy dashed off, a big happy grin spreading across his face. Betty’s father looked around as he handed her an ice cream cone. “What happened to your balloon?” He asked. Betty hesitated for a moment before taking the ice cream cone and licking it slowly. “Daddy’ll get mad at me if I tell him the truth.” She thought, “But I don’t wanna lie, either.” After several more moments, she decided on her answer. Betty looked up at the sky. “It went where all good balloons wanna go.” She told him. He smiled and licked his own ice cream cone. “I’ll get you another one.” He said as she reached up to hold his hand and they wandered farther into the park.
