I am currently in my schools Cultural literature class and am really enjoying it. we are talking about some really controversial stuff but the teacher doesnt care. One day we did this excersize where the teacher would read a statement outloud and we would move to a side of the room depending on if we agreed or not. I was quite surprised some of the shallow people i know in that class were actually some of the people who were the only ones on a side at times. One of the statements was "Most teens don't respect adults." to me this was obviosly written BY an adult and it upset me. What upset me more was that My (nerdish)friend, my guy(girlish) friend and i were the only ones on the disagree side! stressed I'm in seventh grade so we're all teen/preteens and most of my class agreed with that! While doin our littlemock trial like portion of the excercise I raised my hand and explained that most adults assume teens dont respect adults because the way they act.Teens dont want to be shunned by their friends and they might think it would be uncool to respect your elders. We're also just starting to mature and learning ways to show respect for people and well, theyre are a LOT of people who are still very immature.
Another statement in the same class was "Videogames make kids violent". at that statement most of my class laughed and went to the disagree side.We were all arguing that not all videogames are violent and if a child is particularly impressionable the parents shouldnt buy those games for them.AS someone pointed out on another topic...

violence in teens has decreased by over 50% since the production of violent video games. There's a fun little statistic for ya.-
