Flames Flew high in the air of the mountainous region known as Draco Spelaus where two dragons were having a fire breathing contest.
“Mine’s higher than yours!” said Malltrix, a pure black color.
“No Fair! It’s only because you’re bigger!” said Bluefire; a small, pure neon green. But they both knew it wasn’t because Maltrix was bigger, it was because he was more mature than her.
"Stop whining and making excuses, Bluefire!"
Sunlight was fading fast, but it was early afternoon.
"What's going on?" Bluefire said as she turned to her brother." After squinting at the sky for a few moments, she realized the cause of the sudden darkness - hundreds of black dragons were soaring in their direction. She gasped, her eyes filling with fear at the sight of them.
“Run!” Maltrix said. He started to sprint towards home, but realized his sister wasn’t following him. He stopped, turned back, and saw his sister frozen in fear and staring at the sky. One of the evil dragons swooped down, grabbed her with his claws, and ascended back into the black mass of dragons. Maltrix stood in shock, as his sister was carried into the black mass and towards a group of treacherous looking mountains. Snapping out of his shock he bounded towards the cave entrance to his home.
Once he had gotten through the cave entrance he stopped and took a few deep breaths. “Mom, Dad. Bluefire has been taken by the Vaulaethaians!”
His mother looked at him with a look of disbelief. “What do you mean? You can’t be serious!”
“Hundreds of black dragons flew in! One of them swooped down, and caught Bluefire in his claws.” Maltrix replied. -How am I supposed to make mom believe it actually happened? I know she’s been trying to keep Bluefire away from the Vaulaethaians, but for what reason?-
His mother started to cry. “Not my baby! Nooo!” She turned towards her husband. “What are we going to do?”
He opened his mouth to say something and for that moment, that small moment, Maltrix thought he would say we should go rescue Bluefire. But, much to Maltrix’s disappointment, his dad closed his mouth, shook his head and said “I don’t know.”
Maltrix sighed. -It’s hopeless! I’m going to have to rescue her myself-.
“Let’s tell the Council about this!” His mom said. “They’ll know what to do.”
Before his dad had any time to say something Maltrix yelled, “No! They’ll just sit there forever, and it will be too late!” His parents were shocked.
“Then what do you think we should do?” His dad asked.
“I don’t know about you guys.” Maltrix said. “But I’m going to go rescue Bluefire.”
His dad smiled and said, “That’s kind of you to offer, but they are bigger, stronger, and have more experience in the way of fighting. You’d never survive.” Maltrix snorted at his dad.
“I don’t care!” He yelled. He was getting really mad, and when Maltrix got mad his fire got really hot. “I’m going to save Bluefire anyway!” And with that Maltrix flew out of the cave and into the air.
“Wait!” His mother said. “Maltrix!” His father walked over to his wife, and said.
“Let him go. He has made up his mind, and nothing will change it.”
~Meanwhile~
“Let, me go!” Bluefire said. She struggled to get out of the dragon’s hold. Because the dragon made no motion that he had heard her, she decided to try again.
“I said, let me go!” This finally got the dragon’s attention, because he whipped his head around and said, “Be quiet! Or we shall feed you to Hernes.” He seemed to be the leader of the group of dragons. Bluefire was frightened into silence. After flying two more miles, her curiosity got the best of her.
“What’s Hernes?” she asked. The leader laughed at her question. Not hearing his minions laugh with him, he directed an icy stare at them. The minions, not wanting to be eaten by Hernes, laughed nervously.
“She wants to see Hernes. Shall we let her?” The leader said, with a smirk. The minions gave a toothy grin and numerous cries of, “Yes! She shall see Hernes!” or, “Feed her to Hernes!” rose out of the group. Bluefire gulped nervously and thought,-What have I gotten myself into?-
The leader gave another smirk and returned his gaze to a huge, mountain surrounded by a cloud of smoke.
“She shall see Hernes!” He said, loudly. The minions laughed, this time not nervously, and smiled their toothy, grin at each other. A loud resounding noise could be heard.
-What was that? - Bluefire thought, covering her ears with her front feet.-It was a horrible sound! It sounded like metal scraping against… well metal!-
The leader’s smirk returned as he heard the sound.
“Hernes has heard of your coming, and invites you to dinner.” He said.
“More like to be dinner.” A minion said. This contoured up come laughs from the other minions. It also produced one from the leader.
“Have a great time with Hernes.” He said evilly. They were nearing the mountain.
-Soon I’ll be nearing my doom. - Bluefire thought, being pessimistic. They were Sixteen feet away from the entrance to Hernes cave.
“Here comes your dinner, Hernes.” The leader said. Bluefire couldn’t see because the smoke was getting in her eyes, but she knew he was smiling.
–Goodbye Mom, Dad, Maltrix. It was nice while it lasted...-
~Back with Maltrix~
As Maltrix flew in the air he looked down to see a lush green forest with grey specks here and there.
“Out a’ the way!” A voice said. Maltrix looked up in time to just see a big bird come crashing into him. The pair fell to the ground in a spiral. After hitting the ground Maltrix got up to see the big bird dusting himself off.
“Watch where you’re going you crazy dragon!” The bird said. Maltrix now realized that the bird was a Phoenix. Then realizing that he was just called a name he snorted and said, “Who you calling a crazy dragon?!” The Phoenix gave a laugh that sounded much like a caw.
“Who else? It’s only you, me and the forest, dragon.” The Phoenix said. “Maybe you could help me with the wolves...” He said out loud.
Maltrix was confused. “What wolves? Why? What have they done?” He asked.
The Phoenix looked at Matrix.
“What have they done? It’s more like what they haven’t done!” The Phoenix said.
He sighed. “Ok. Firstly, my name is Ra.” Ra said. Maltrix smiled.
“Nice to meet you Ra.” He said. “Oh, and by the way, my name is not, crazy dragon, It’s Maltrix.” Ra blinked and gave an apologetic nod. Once Maltrix had motioned for Ra to continue, he did.
“Secondly; they won’t let anyone near the lake, they claim it’s theirs.” Maltrix snorted at this.
“Humph.” Maltrix said. “Wolves. I suspect they think everything’s theirs?” Ra nodded.
“Third; will you help me? I need to get those wolves away but I’m just not a match for their leader. Maybe you could defeat him, don’t kill him, possibly, and let him know that what he’s doing isn’t right?” This was not an ordinary request. Oh, no! And ordinary request would be something like, “Would you get the family some food, dear?” or maybe even, “Please, practice your Draconian History, dear.” But conquering wolves was definitely not a common request. Since this was no common request, Maltrix had to think upon the required things.
-So this, Ra, wants me to defeat, but not kill, some leader of the wolves, so animals can get to this lake?- He thought. –This will take some serious consideration. And possibly some skill. - Maltrix walked up to Ra, and stared him right in the eyes.
“So. What you’re asking me to do is no ordinary request, and you know this?” He asked. Ra nodded.
“It is all right if you have no intentions of helping me.” Ra said, calmly. “I’m sure someone else can help as well.” Maltrix sat on his hind quarters and thought some more. –So to defeat this, leader of the wolves, I’m going to need speed, strength, and who knows what else!- Maltrix sighed and looked back up at Ra, after taking everything into consideration.
“Fine. I’ll do it.” He said, grudgingly. Ra smiled, which is probably very hard for a bird, and said, “Thank you! Thank you, Maltrix!” Maltrix nodded and stared at Ra waiting for him to show him to the lake. For a while neither of them moved. Maltrix finally sighed and opened his mouth to speak.
“Um, Ra?” He said quizzically. Ra acknowledged him by cocking his head to one side. “Aren’t you going to show me to the lake? Otherwise I can’t really defeat this ‘Leader of The Wolves’, if you don’t.” Ra’s head shot straight up and he blinked rapidly.
“Oops!” He said. As he hopped in the direction of the lake he continued to talk. “Sorry about that. I guess you can’t really fight him if you’re no where near him.” Maltrix followed with a crooked grin.
As they walked there were lush green tree everywhere. It was like the forest itself was a maze. –It’s amazing how Ra knows where to go, and how to get there. - Maltrix thought. –I think I’d get lost if I tried to go anywhere! - With this picture in his mind Maltrix chuckled to himself. Besides there are no dragons in forests. They’re too big, and they’d be destroying the forest, accidentally of course, if they tried to go anywhere.
After what seemed a couple hours, but with much arguing from Ra, was actually only half an hour, they made it to the lake. As Maltrix looked around he didn’t see any wolves. To be more precise, not even any other animals, well besides them. He stepped into the light that was surrounding the lake, to get a better view. As he looked up he saw that the trees had left a circular hole above the lake open, illuminating the water. Suddenly out of the corner of Maltrix’s eye, a black shape came out of the shadow of a looming Elk tree.
“Prepare to face the consequences if you try to take even one drip of water from the lake, Dragon.” He growled. Maltrix turned to face the animal, and saw that it was a wolf. Many pairs of luminescent, green eyes could be seen in the shadows behind him.
-Assuming that all those pairs of luminescent eyes are wolves then, I have a lot to worry about. - Maltrix thought.
The wolf’s face had scars on it, many scars, but the most noticeable one started from the tip of his snout, and curled to the top of his left eye. In his eyes was a fierce and determined look, but along with this there was a slight tint of fear in them as well. –Perfectly normal for animals to fear dragons. - Maltrix thought, -Especially if you’ve never really seen one before. - Some the other wolves in the pack were staring to look a little scared. Maltrix stepped forward and said, “I challenge the leader of this pack to a duel!”
The rest of the wolves blinked. The second after that, howls of laughter pealed the air.
“You?!” One said between laughs. “Challenge, Trinith?” Maltrix snorted and stared at the wolves.
“Is there a problem with that?” He asked, with a glare.
Now when dragons glare, it produces sheer silence. For a dragon’s glare is very startling. Not to mention, quite frightening too. Thus, the effect is simple. The animal is subject to silence for fear of what the dragon might to do them. It was the same on the wolves. The wolves stood silent. Scared of what the dragon might do.
Even though there were a lot of wolves, everyone knows that a dragon’s scales can only be penetrated by sheer, pure, silver at twilight.
Maltrix nodded, happy by the outcome. “If I win I get control over the lake, and vice-versa.” The leader, Trinith, stepped forward.
“I, Trinith, accept your challenge.” He stated. The two stood for attacking. Trinith made the first move, jumping at Maltrix’s back, aiming to claw at it. Maltrix backed up, but not far enough. Trinith clawed at his back, until he was thrown off. It was only a scratch but it was bleeding anyway.
-For a wolf he doesn’t have bad aim. - He thought. Maltrix ran at him, hoping that his plan would work and he could get back to rescuing his sister. Unfortunately Trinith sidestepped out of the way, and Maltrix crashed into a tree. By the time he opened his eyes, a few minutes later, the other wolves were laughing and Trinith’s back was turned.
-Now I can get him! - Maltrix thought. He got up and something ‘snapped’ inside of him. –Wait if I did that I’d be no better than the Vaulaethaians! – Realizing this, he gave a low growl so that Trinith might turn around.
Like he wanted, Trinith turned around, and for one fleeting moment, in his eyes there was surprise. Maltrix grinned and charged once again at Trinith. Trinith stood there ready to jump out of the way, but this was what Maltrix wanted to happen.
Maltrix stopped short of ramming into Trinith, but right as he stopped, Trinith jumped out of the way.
Now this is where the other part of the plan comes into action.
As Trinith jumped out of the way, Maltrix blew fire in the direction that he thought Trinith would land. This caused Trinith to run around yelping in pain. He watched startled as Trinith ran around, howling in pain.
“I guess I win?” He said questioningly. Trinith shot him an angry glare, but there was defeat in the glare as well.
“I suppose.” Trinith said resentfully. “So now you have complete control of the lake.” While this was going on some wolves were whispering, so Trinith turned around to talk to them. After a few minets of this, Trinith finally faced back and looked at Maltrix with narrowed eyes. By now Ra had flown down to land next to Maltrix and looked at Trinith.
“Why are you looking at him?” Ra asked. Trinith looked at Ra, and Ra hopped back, now wanting to be eaten or glared at.
“Because of a prophecy.” Trinith stated plainly. Ra blinked and opened his mouth to say something, but was interrupted by Maltrix.
“May I hear the prophecy?” He asked. Trinith nodded and motioned for the oldest wolf Maltrix had ever seen, to come forward. Since he was old the wolf came forward slowly.
“The prophecy of old spoke of a dragon that would help The Dark Destroyer defeat the Great Evil.” He said. Ra began to open his mouth again but was only interrupted by Trinith.
“It describes the dragon. Would you like to hear?” Maltrix nodded, and the old wolf continued.
“He will have unfathomable skill, second to only The Dark Destroyer and will be related to them.” Once the old wolf was done, he slipped back into the rest of the pack. Once the old wolf had left Ra opened his mouth, only to be interrupted by Trinith again.
“Do you know anyone like that?” He asked Maltrix. Maltrix was about to reply, but Ra cawed angrily and burst into flames.
