How they get the scroll

Lil walked up to the door of her brother's house, taking a moment to put on a straight face. She was grinning gleefully. Galad would love her latest interest, and she intended to tell him about it in the most indirect way possible... hence the need for a straight face. She knew he hated it when she beat around the bush, and she was looking forward to seeing his face conflicted- with an annoyed expression and gleaming, eager eyes.
Having composed her face, she rang the doorbell.

Galadheon Lute jumped about a foot off of his chair, knocking over some papers he had been marking down the translation of some tablet...l he had been working on it for several days without sleep now, and was too tired to remember which tablet it was... probably Mayan. He'd remember when he woke up.
He stumbled over a plaster-cast dinosaur bone that had somehow fallen from the wall where it was mounted- hed have to get back to it.
He tripped over a model Canopic jar, and knocked his head against a real wooden figurehead from a norse ship. wincing and rubbing his head, he somehow made his way around other archeological clutter without further catastrophes.
opening the door, hair touseled and eyes bleary, he blinked at the sunlight and at his older sister, who rolled her eyes in amusement.

"Hey Galad! can I come in?" she asked, wondering if she should stick with her plan, add coffee to it, or just tell him now.

He nodded wordlessly, stepping over a tablet that had somehow fallen to the floor. His house was a mess... he ought to clean it up... he thought this through such a fog of exaustion that he barely knew what he had thought.
almost mechanically, he leads his sister to the sitting room, sitting in a chair and closing his eyes... for only a few seconds it seemed...

Liliedhe shook her sleeping brother awake. Perhaps I should just tell it to him now...
"Hey Galad! Wake up now! You gotta hear this!" she shouts in his ear.

Galadheon mumbles, the first coherent thing hes said in the past three days.
"Just a little while longer, Lil..."
he curls up tighter in the chair, sleeping off the multiple all-nighters he had pulled translating the tablet.
the tablet... He was almost done... It wasn't important, but he liked it all the same...

Lil shakes him harder, like she used to do when she had to wake him up for school after their parents had died.
"Seriously, Gal!" she said, using his least favorite nickname, "You'll be really interested if you'd only wake up..."

"All right, all right..." Galadheon mumbles, fending off Lil's hands, "But its not a..." he opens his eyes, less bleary after an hour or so's sleep, which is how long lil let him sleep. "Oh. thats right. I'm not in school." he blinks.
"Why are you here?"

"I have something neat to tell you! I was looking up a rumor that the library of Alexandria had reappeared, and along the way, guess what I found!"

Galad, his interest finally piqued-- the library of alexandria was one of his pet peeves, all that information, all those books and scrolls, going up in flames. it would be a remarkable find...
And if it was back?
"wh... What did you find?" he asked his older sister, eyes wide.

Lil grinned. "Well, I followed a bunch of clues until I found this antique dealer in Cairo who had this scroll. I knew you'd like it, but I wasn't sure how to get it here. I want you to come with me and take a look."

"I'll come!" Said Galad, enthusiastically leaping out of his seat and grabbing whatever necessities he could reach over, under, or through all of the junk in his house.
He finally manages to get enough stuff to be ready.
"Did you find the library?" he asked, out of breath, "or just this scroll?"

Liliedhe grins. "I'm close to finding out where it is. I need your help on that one. I want you to see the scroll first."

Galad grins.

they leave immediately. Liliedhe's Paranormal 'club' had managed to get tickets to egypt for both of them.

------

Galad lifts the scroll carefully out of its case with the ease of long practice and gloves and stretches it out on a table.
his face falls in disappointment. it was blank, save for a firefly design in the center.
he carefully rolls the scroll back up and puts it into its case. He was keeping it anyway... Lil had paid for it and he knew how to get it home without much trouble.
besides, he felt strangely attached to this scroll...

-----

they had found the library! disappointing, almost. it was practically a replica, a gem in a city of the modern.

Despite the modernness surrounding it, Galad felt a surge of joy. Here it was. It would record this time as it recorded that time long ago. and perhaps it would remain, with the less cruel social norms of this time.
They decided to buy sandwiches and have a meal near the library, gazing at it and trying to loose the airplanes overhead, the motorboats, and the cars in a dream of the past.

then their lives, or Galad's. at least, changed forever..../color]
(the unsealing rp starts here, i think)

Unsealing response:

Lil was driving to the valley of the kings. She had promised, and nothing would make her break that. Not that lady, not a scroll, and certainly not some kid they'd picked up.
Albeit a very interesting kid. She looked in the rearview mirror and smiled. A very cute kid.
The girl was sitting on Galad's lap.
Such a innocent brother I have! thought Liliedhe. The expression on his face as he looked at the child was comical. As if he couldn't believe that the sweet little antennaed child on his lap staring at him with big, cute eyes was real.

the child stared at the big man. He was so funny, with his face like that, but the little girl really would've liked it if he'd change his face. The big moving thing was fun, and she did glance out of the window- things moving so fast!

... Though not too fast because Lil knew the child wasn't wearing a seatbelt.
She didn't want to lose this child in an accident, and there was nowhere among all of Galad's junk to seat the kid.
The child interested her. After all, Lil had spent most of her life chasing the supernatural, and here was one physical, supernatural occurance sitting on her brother's lap.

the child squeaked, the first sound they had heard her make.
The man's face didn't change.
The child was puzzled. She reached out a hand and touched his bristly face.

Galadheon shuddered at the touch, like a sleeper coming out of a dream. He blinked.
The child was still there. Still real. He grinned widely. He felt so... Happy! She was his kid now.
He still couldn't believe that that scroll...
Even though he had accompanied his sister on her wierd missions, he had never really thought that this would happen... TO HIM.
He hugged the child gently and awkwardly, scared that he'd hurt her, but also having very little experience with hugs. He didn't even hug his sister, ever. Always those manly half-hugs.

the child giggled, and gave him a tight hug. He was funny and his face had lit up!

Liliedhe couldn't help laughing herself. The child's laughter was infectious. She drove along for a few more minutes. Then, she smiled and said, softly, "So... I guess I have a niece now."

Galadheon stops his awkward hug and looks at the rearview mirror, where liliedhe's eyes were visible. His own eyes were large.
"Y.. Yes."

"What are we going to call her?" asked Lil driving, her smirk wide on her face.

"Uh.. er..."
Galad hadn't thought of that. Hadn't thought about kids at all.
He stared at the child in his lap. He wanted to name her something interesting, something nice.
Oh man.. why hadn't he ever thought about this before?! he had never thought he was ever going to have kids. or a girlfriend, which he definitely did not have.
He knew a girl, back when he still went to school, like in kindergarten. er name was Abigail. And, when he was in first grade, he knew a girl named
Danielle. He thought they were both such pretty names, though he never told those girls that.
What if... he combined the names?
Abelle? no thats lame... Adani? No... It doesn't sound right...
He looked up, anxious and sure that Lil needed an answer. A quick name that sounded nice. Two syllables.
Suddenly, his mind clicked.
Addie, Ada, Adelle... OH! Adei!!!
"Adei!" he yelped!

The newly christened Adei almost jumped. loud!
but she saw his face. He was really happy! She brushed her finger along his face, marveling at the funny roughness.

Galad laughed, sounding relieved, excited, and half hysterical all at the same time. "You're Adei, I'm Galadheon!" he sai happily, gently poking Adei's nose.

Lil was startled too, but through a herculean feat of concentration managed to not crash into a truck.
"Okay!" she said, "I'll go rebook the flight, if you don't mind staying at a hotel for a while."

Galad had no objections. He was too damn happy. So this was what being a father was like.

June was a good month for Adei, Galadheon had learned. She seemed happier during this part of the summer than in any other month in the two years he had been raising her.
Before she had been whisked into his life during a trip to Egypt with his sister and a meeting with an interesting lady who claimed to be from the library of Alexandria, he would have spent his time, even during the warm months, with some new artifact and would not have even thought about leaving the house. Especially in summertime. He was more in shape than he had been, but still could barely get through 15 minutes of excercise. Especially in the heat.
But here he was, standing out in the noon heat, hiking in the park with his daughter. It was still hard to believe.

Adei stopped walking and smiled at her "daddy". Her antenna twitched happily.
She loved this time of year. It was fun! It was warm and she just felt so energetic!
"Your slow Gally!" she called, using the combination of the nickname that her Aunt Lil had given her dad and the word 'Daddy'.
She did know he wasnt her Dad.. he didnt have antenna. But she loved him all the same. He was funny, he took her places, and he was good at teaching.
School was for other kids, and they had to sit in rooms while she could go out and play during this wonderful month!

Galadheon panted and nodded. hiking was hard work.
He couldnt believe how well she talked, or had grown!
he wasnt an expert on children, but he could have sworn that they don't talk until later.
Then again, she could be older than that.
Then again, did he care? He thought she was the best thing that had happened to him. Once he would have thought that finding a rare celtic artifact depicting an appearant UFO landing would be the best thing (for him and his sister) but after two years with this little bit of sunshine in his life... Well, he was certainly better off.
"I'm coming, honey!" he called after her, "Don't worry about..."
he stopped. She had a strange look on her face.

Adei stared at nothing in particular, her antennae moved from side to side. She could have sworn she had heard something.
"Gally? Can we go home?"

"Sure... Why?" he asked, finally having caught his breath.

"I just wanna check on something." She smiled. "Maybe I left the door unlocked."

"Or maybe I did. I was the last one out of the house." he said, turning back and beginning the short slog back.
