"Eat you? Umm. Well, I don't really eat people. Er, well, um, I guess we're don't really count as 'people' anymore. I have been eating fish more lately . . . Woah! If we're fish, and I eat fish, does that make us cannibals? That would kind of be a problem. I mean, like, I tried seaweed, but I just wasn't a fan. Kind of bitter. It's good with sushi, but . . . oh sorry." Kate ceased her rambling.

This isn't helping him. Kate released a sigh of hot air and inhaled the coolness of the Lagoon. She smiled at Ta warmly, the mark on her head now glowing again. "Well, I just want you to know that I'm totally here for you, Ta. I'll stay with you until you're finished your change." She gently placed one her of her large flippers on Ta's shoulder as an act of support.

"I have been eating snails." Ta shrugged, "Seaweed is still good for me, but I guess I was used to the taste before the change. I'm not able to eat fish anymore though..."

Ta's tail felt a little sore, it felt like the bottom part of it was swelling from the new growth. It made treading the water a bit more difficult.

"Follow me? My tail is a little sore, I think it just grew." He beckoned to Kate as he let himself sink down to a lower part of the ocean.

"By the way." Ta said, with a concerned look on his face, "Your head... is glowing."

Kate let herself sink below the water with Ta, watching with fascination as his changes progressed.

Instinctively she touched her forehead at Ta's remark, moving her hand away, she could see a cool glow cast on her rubbery palm. She could feel an energy from the seal spread through her body, bringing about a kind of euphoric state. She took great delight in watching this merman complete his transformation and join the others in oneness with the sea. She knew her thoughts were being altered . . . no, not quite altered, but enhanced. She didn't understand it, but she didn't mind it either.

Sinking deeper into the blue, she cast Ta a warm smile, cupping her hands around one of his and massaging it affectionately. It was definitely something that Kate wouldn't do, she knew, but something else inside her was asking for control, and she willingly gave it over. The runes on her shoulders and head all glowed brightly.

"Err, Kate? Are you okay?"

Ta was- for lack of a better word, surprised. And rather uncomfortable. Ta was native to a country where holding hands in public was taboo. It wasn't like anyone else was around, but the reflexive feeling of awkwardness remained.

He tilted his glasses to the bridge of his nose. Kate was acting pretty strange. Well, he thought she was pretty strange before the marks started glowing, but now... something was different about her. He looked at the marking on her forehead and it penetrated his eyes with a piercing light.

"Dah!" Ta held his eyes with his free hand.

When he opened his eyes, everything was blurry. It was a familiar sensation, the temporary blindness he had when he dropped his glasses. Except his glasses were still on. He pulled them off, and everything was clear again.

Ta's eyes widened, "Whoa."

Kate continued to keep Ta's hand in her own. She could sense that he was uncomfortable, but at the same time he didn't take his hand away. She was glad.

A voice echoed in her head. It was the same one she heard when she had spent her time in isolation.

(Child, watch. This is the power of the transformation from humanoid to mermanoid. This boy is being healed, purified in mind and body. The sea renews all.)

As Ta removed his glasses and widened his eyes, Kate seemed to catch on. He could see without them! Still unable to speak in the water in her current form, she smiled and rubbed the top of his hand gently. A joyful click emerged from her throat and echoed through the water.

There was just one more thing- Ta's leg stubs fanned out into full blown fins- causing no more than a flinch from the already distracted merman. And soon, the feeling of completion washed over him.

It was odd, that warm, whole feeling Ta had when his changes finished. It was like up until now, there was a piece missing- and his latest change had put it in for him. No human would be able to feel what he was feeling now- the complete transformation from one species to another. A rebirth.

Ta smiled, and pulled Kate into a hug.

There was still a bit of the timid person he was- but there was a wave of confidence that wasn't there before.

Ta let go of Kate and dropped his glasses to the ocean floor, "Done." he said, "Finally done."

Though Kate had just met Ta, in his embrace she could sense that there was a kind of liberation that had just taken place. It was deeply moving to her, and she gladly pulled herself into the Koi, rubbing his scaled back gently.

No more worries or regret that their human lives had been taken from them, no more disgust and anger at their altered forms, but acceptance, peace, and love. Respecting the strength and beauty they have become, and moving forward to creating a new life for themselves. A part of Kate felt Ta's energy, and wished everyone on the island could feel the same way. She wondered how long it would be until her own changes completed.

Kate motioned upward to the surface, gesturing to her throat, that she was unable to speak in water, an unfair advantage Ta held over her now.

Ta looked up to the surface, still a little bit in a daze. Oh. Uh.. Right.

There was a feeling of zen, of oneness, when he propelled himself up smoothly with his tail. He smiled. It wasn't so bad, his changes were finished, he can live his new life under the water. He wasn't in the limbo between species, he was one whole merperson. Ta looked out to the horizon. The sun was starting to set. It was rather symbolic, he mused. The end of the day, the end of an old life.

Ta let out a satisfied sigh and turned to Kate, "Thanks, for staying with me, I mean."
