Mayumi Kisaragi of Boogiepop Phantom had a problem in childbirth causing her to loose memory constantly, remembering only what was in the moment.
She is literally living in the moment, because she is incapable of looking back, and looking forward would indeed be difficult, seeing as she is living blissfully unaware of everything in a hospital. She has no worries except for the here and now, nothing to look out for, nothing to haunt her. She would forget about her mother's death, she would forget about the baby everyone supposed she lost.
Wouldn't that be great, living in the moment, not looking at anything else?
Then why is it we (I, at least) look at Mayumi and feel sorry for her, want to help her?
Discuss.

I guess, but then nothing would change. History would repeat itself and now that would be a tragic mess, wouldn't it? If anyone is going to make a difference in this world, they'll need to remember what they're trying to do. (Yeah, it's a crappy answer.)
I feel sorry for her because she seems lonley. She can't remember anyone! She's pretty much lost what was truly important to her, she's happy, but what's the point of being happy if your alone? You can't help anyone at all and you might aswell be a gold fish (their memories last about two seconds. When Goldie died she didn't even remember me. T.T). It just seems so...repatative and pointless altogether.
"Great happiness makes you love the world. Great sorrows make you understand the world." (Might not be the exact quote and I forgot who said this. XD) "Be the change you want in the world" (Again, might not be exact.) - Gandhi (One of my most favorite dead people!)

Friday has a lot of good points there. to not rememebr anything about your past must be lonely. but i wouldn't say here existance was pointless. she may have been living a false happiness, but it was happiness never the less.
i believe to understand happiness, you must first experience sorrow to learn appreciation. her existance wasn't pointless, but it also wasn't complete. i think that's why i felt sorry for her.

This would have to be true because without memory it is impossible for you to possess an ego, which is the root of all humanistic problems.

Rains On Friday LuckasDiLoria This would have to be true because without memory it is impossible for you to possess an ego, which is the root of all humanistic problems. But then how could you progress in life? There would be no necessity. The meaning of life is truely comfort, and our ego causes us the most mental discomfort.
