Title: Containment
Characters Involved: Kowagaru (mentions of Mr. Wizard and Anya)
Circumstances: (Formal or informal?): Formal
Thread Link: N/A
Pages (if applicable): N/A
Type (1st or 3rd person?): 1st

Summary: Kowagaru's thoughts on his containment.

Notes: Just a drabble to practice writing in 1st person.

(Entry One- Containment.
Type- First Person)

I am trapped.

Trapped…forever, possibly.

This place seems to close in on me more every day, the grey, emotionless walls threatening to smother me to death. I surely don’t have much time left, I need to go back to work and continue my research towards my goal…!

But I cannot. There is nothing in my room that would allow me to write, much less perform the experiments needed. I must not think about that now- Instead, I must think about things that may allow me to escape this place.

I turn my head to look at the door, wondering if I would ever see that strange, possibly mentally disturbed girl. What is she doing here, eh? There is no connection between her and myself, we look nothing alike, act nothing alike. What purpose could a place such as this use such different individuals?

Unless…

No, surely not. Those scientists, ‘white-coats’ as that girl called them, they just worked here. On new sources of energy, or the mystery of Pokémon evolution, or something different all together. Surely they are not planning to use us as part of an experiment?

This place…it must be making me paranoid. I must remain to the solid evidence, the truth that I know exists. But I know that this place…it is abnormal. There are no Pokémon here that I have ever seen (Anya mentioned a Charizard, but who is to say that she wasn’t hallucinating?), no people other than the scientists and the people who bring me food and Anya.

Of course, there is a microphone on the wall. I wonder what would happen if I…?

No. I must not. It’s too dangerous. What if it is only meant to be used in emergencies, or in situations that it is better to kill the experiment than-

I am not an experiment. I do not know for sure.

For now, perhaps I should rest. This situation is taxing my nerves, and anxiety can shorten my lifespan. I need all the time I can get.

Third Entry:
MissingNo #3: Kowagaru Kisei (Seviper, Arbok, Mismagis, Banette, Duskull)

All things with form must perish.

Kowagaru refused to believe that fact.

From a young age, his parents noticed that he was a very strange child. It wasn’t that he was openly malicious or displayed the hallmarks of insanity, but his cold nature that set him apart from the group. He spoke to few and cared for less.

His parents also noticed something else: He developed at a rapid rate. He learned much, much faster than his peers, almost to the point of being forwarded to the third grade while he still should have been in Kindergarten.

But his teachers, fearing his social growth, opted to only move him up to second grade. His emotionless silence perturbed his teachers greatly- They were almost afraid of him.

His parents, however, knew a different side of him- A warmer side. Kowagaru remained quiet, but around his parents, his coldness seemed to dissolve. He would smile and laugh like any child, his voice high and childish. With his parents, his happiness knew no bounds- He loved his life, but even more than that, he loved his parents.

But then, in the blink of an eye, everything changed.

It was a normal family outing that was often made: Kowagaru and his parents would drive to a nearby fast food joint, pick up salads, and head back home. Only on that particular trip, someone had made a fatal mistake.

Kowagaru’s memory of this event at this point faded: But he knew what happened that afternoon as clearly as the lifeless room around him. A drunk driver barreled from around the corner, crushing the front of Kowagaru’s parent’s car, killing both of them on impact.

Only little Kowagaru survived, saved by his seat belt and the fact that he was riding in the back. He survived with many injuries, although few of them were physical. For many months he remained fearful that his own death was just around the corner. But finally he forced himself to move forward and keep on walking- “To stand still makes life not worth living”, he stated many years later.

Unfortunately, his parents had no surviving relatives- Neither had brothers or sisters, and all of Kowagaru’s grandparents had died already. He was placed in an orphanage, but this was not the orphanage you are probably imagining right now, with dreary walls and unhappiness abound. Far from it: The place was very happy and lively, and most of the children had never known their parents.

Kowagaru had known his parents, however, and he would never forget them. He was sent to school still, as is required by the country his parents lived in, but he found little pleasure in the tedious day-to-day schedule. He still learned, by all means, but he simply didn’t care. The only reason he made the straight A’s he did was because of his sharpness, not because of his working at it.

By the time he reached the 5th grade his teachers began to worry. He still had formed no friendships with any of his peers, and remained reclusive. But there was something different now. Instead of silent apathy, he seemed depressed, and maybe even vengeful towards anyone who dared speak to him.

But his teachers could do nothing about it. Meanwhile, Kowagaru remained in the orphanage, unadopted. He watched child after child leave, and noticed something. The happier, more outgoing children were always the ones who found their happy home. The quieter but sometimes kinder children were passed over, ignored as though they were useless dolls only to be discarded.

Kowagaru continued to grow and progress through school, and his silence began to slowly break. He began to relish, and even initiate through his cajoling and charisma, the many conflicts among his peers. This conflict seemed to interest him to the point of obsession- Many of his peers feared him for his apparent sadism. Still more feared him for the strange power he seemed to hold over them, his beautiful, deep voice enchanting those who heard it into near submission. Who could resist such a charismatic person?

The main reason Kowagaru created so much conflict was for one simple reason: He was bored with himself, and his life. People as friends did not hold his interest, with their petty goals that were never accomplished. His studies, now as a senior, were still far too simple for his expanding mind.

Although he treated humans with little respect, he treated all Pokémon well. To him, they were little more than animals- Not to say that they weren’t intelligent, but he thought that they should not live up to high standards. They could never accomplish what mankind had, even with their purity and good as compared to the corrupt society humans lived in. Kowagaru knew that humans were horrible, petty monsters who do not have the ability to see past themselves. Kowagaru told what few people dared speak to him this often. When one particularly daring person pointed out that Kowagaru was human himself, he stated, “I am human physically, but not in mental processes or thinking.”

Unsurprisingly, Kowagaru graduated with top honors, taking the coveted Valedictorian title of his senior class and received many scholarships. He didn’t even have to think about where he was going or what he had to do. He already knew, and his plan had worked out perfectly. Kowagaru packed up his few belongings and left the orphanage with no sadness- The place, he knew, held nothing for his future goals.

As Kowagaru looked back over his memories, it seemed as though his college life was just a blink- There, and then gone. Everything was a blur. Nothing truly stood out to Kowagaru other than the fact that his peers often referred to him as “Kisei-sama”, out of respect and fear, or “Hebi-sama”, warning others to his horrible double-edged nature as best they could. There was no one among his classes in his major, Chemistry, that dared speak against him in front of his face. Although Kowagaru was not aggressive, they knew that, in one way or another, he would get back at them.

Another quote that Kowagaru was reminded of came to mind: “You always say, ‘I wouldn’t fall for that!’, until you hear the sweet voice of the serpent slowing prodding you into its plans.”

The rest of his college life passed uneventfully, and he graduated again with top honors in four years, out-shining everyone in his graduating class. Immediately he was offered a well-paying position for what was, at the time, the best medicine development company in the country. Of course he accepted, who wouldn’t?

Over the span of his twenty-year life, many things had festered in his mind- The strongest of which were the fear and resentment he felt towards his parent’s death. Never had he felt such sadness as the day his parents died, and that even thinking about that day caused the young Kowagaru to shudder and cry.

But he could never forget the cause of his torment- A stupid, inconsiderate human who had been too ignorant to not drive after drinking. All humans are like that, he thought, all except for me. At such a young, vulnerable age I was shown the truth in a painful, eternal way. The truth is that all humans besides those who can see their own corruption are too evil to associate with unless forced to see the truth.

There were two other things that he had realized as well, all that long time ago. Number one was that he wouldn’t be able to survive without other humans, and that conversion would be a difficult, almost impossible process. Number two was that if he was going to show the world his truth, he would have to extend his life beyond the human limit- He would have to achieve immortality. And they way to achieve that lay in his make-up, and the make-up of his cells.

It was for this reason that he worked in that company, day in and day out. His co-workers believed that, beyond that cold, manipulative exterior laid a warm altruistic heart, sacrificing massive amounts of time and sleep to work for the greater good of creating cures and vaccines. But they were blind to the truth there too, weren’t they? All of his research and pay checks were going towards his ‘impossible’ goal- Yet Kowagaru never believed he could falter.

It was in that place that Kowagaru practically had lived for the next thirty years. He was considered a genius in his field, and he almost never failed what was asked of him. But it still wasn’t enough for him- He had to achieve immortality, and fast. At the age of fifty, there was no party. Even the stoic Kowagaru celebrated his own birthday- He would treat himself to whatever he wanted, not worrying about the cost in money or otherwise.

But the year he turned fifty was when he realized that immortality would slip from his grip if he didn’t hurry. Now there were no parties or celebrations, only fear.

Now his fear was acute. The man’s pale skin was covered in sweat from his anxiety. He knew his time was slowly ticking away. And now, where was he? Not working in his lab, but locked in a grey, featureless room. Neither his face nor his long, silky black hair were plagued by the signs of age- He appeared to be only thirty in the face and body, yet his limbs seemed too long for his weight. His body had never gained the weight needed to make him not look long-limbed and thin, due to the fact that he was too busy planning the rest of his life.

So far, everything had been going to plan. Not once had his plan faltered, except for now he was locked in this place. This was not of his consent, nor of his doing. It had all began…how long ago? He had been working in his lab peacefully, and then WHAM! Nothing. Knocked unconscious by…what?

At this point, the wound had long since healed. With each moment that passed, Kowagaru felt his life slowly slipping away, until eventually he would meet the same fate as that of his parents. The man knew he was alone right now, and held nothing back from his wail of acute agony, pouring into it his anger, but most of all his fear and his sadness. Even now, 45 years later, he still grieved that day. His thoughts of that clung to him like a plague, most of all this one: “How would things have been different if they had survived?”

Finally, out of breath, Kowagaru allowed his scream to die, but it had not served its purpose. His fear still was still clear: I’m going to die here. I’ve done nothing in this life; I’ve not accomplished my goal. I’m the only one who can see the truth, yet I’m going to die here, caged as those who are corrupt should be- Not me! He let another anguished scream, trying to calm himself still.

Again and again he tried, but nothing worked. Sweat still covered his brow, and his head pounded in his chest, wasting beats as it desperately pumped oxygen to his tense muscles. The man stood and began to pace, his grey eyes wide and dilated in obvious distress.

The people who came to him in this place…they were corrupt. Their corruption was horrifying- They were totally emotionless! They cared nothing for his suffering. Why were they so cold towards him, a man who is in so much torment?

His pacing sped up.

He strode around his room for many moments until, suddenly, his body shuddered involuntarily. His heart seemed to skip a beat as his legs began to shake to the point that he couldn’t walk. No! He let out another wail as he fell to the ground, his entire body shaking horribly. Harsh pain flared through his body, and his stomach flip-flopped.

I will not die here!

The pain began to fade, slowly at first, but then rapidly. He continued to shake, and his stomach felt worse than ever. Finally he gave into his body’s need, and vomited.

A few minutes later he had forced himself onto the utilitarian slab of extremely uncomfortable materials, still shaking, but his stomach felt very much better. His thoughts seemed to whirl at an impossible pace, each one running into another, jumbled. ‘What is that will it feeling. Happen again?’ As much as he tried, he could not slow his fevered, fearful thoughts down.

Finally he calmed down, and his body stopped shaking so violently. His thoughts began to slow as well. ‘What was that feeling? Will it happen again? Was I dying?’ Kowagaru’s eyes were still wide and dilated, staring blankly at the wall as he tried to rest his now tired body. He felt oddly exhausted by the episode of vomiting and pain.

Kowagaru chalked it up to his anxiety problems- Or at least, that what he hoped that’s what it was. His eyelids slowly began to droop regardless of his unease, yet as he drifted away into his fretful dreams, he couldn’t help but feel that something about his body was wrong.

The man was enshrouded in darkness, his eyes unresponsive. In the distance, he heard a car approaching…And then, with a shriek of crashing steel, the car surely had crashed into something. He could hear the crackling of fire, and the scream of a woman.

“Save him! Please, save my son!”

Suddenly Kowagaru’s eyes snapped into working- Partially. He was still surrounded by darkness, but now, in front of him was a young version of himself. Behind himself, however, a monstrous creature stood, clad in all black, eyes shining as red as the blood it had already spilled. It raised its scythe…!

Kowagaru snapped back into consciousness, a scream escaping him.

Notes:

It had been awhile. Quite awhile, he thought. But once again a pale hand slid open the door to the outside 'world' - at least, the world as he knew it. Kowagaru had stayed mostly in his room ever since the incident with the disturbed teens. Occasionally he would slip out to the cafeteria, peer around anxiously, and then return. He had no use for these people at the moment.

Instead he had turned his thoughts on himself. On his goals, and his actions. And he had found no fault with them, as usual. But it served as some entertainment in this drab nightmare. To be honest, though, Kowagaru sometimes...kinda wanted company. Even the hyperactive Anya or the deranged people he had met in the cafeteria so long ago. Perhaps that was why he was going out today - to find something to distract himself, if only momentarily.

Already his hair was becoming a bit lighter towards the roots, a few wrinkles appearing around his eyes. His age of fifty-four was finally beginning to show, ever so slightly. Thankfully there were no mirrors in Kowagaru's room, or else he might've had a heart attack.

He peered out the door - no one there. Where would he go? He wasn't real sure. The cafeteria was the best bet. Surely there were other places to hang out, but...that would require wandering around, and wandering was a dangerous thing.
