Eevee: 9

Katt woke up to find her head resting gently on Kitt’s shoulder. Her first instinct was to jolt away, but the feeling was smothered by the dread of waking him up. For some reason, the prospect of disturbing his peaceful slumber seemed a terrible sin. So she just stared at his beautiful face and watched the rising and falling of his chest while she kept her head still on his shoulder. Many passengers lay asleep on benches around them. The sounds of children and splashing waves banished the lingering silence. Katt was close enough to hear Kitt’s soft breathing as he slept.

It wasn’t until a few hours passed that Kitt finally awoke. Katt slowly rose her head. His eyes had a sleepy, dazed look in them that seemed to be reminiscing some half forgotten memory. He had an almost teary look as he stared into Katt’s face. Though he didn’t seem to see her at all.

“Kitt,” Katt said, trying to get him out of his daze, “Kitt.”

He finally heard her and wiped his eyes. The sleepiness drained from his face, and his regular face returned.

“Your cheeks are red,” Kitt said. Katt turned her head away, puzzled by his actions.

Feeling uneasy, Kitt stood up and walked away. Katt thought he must have taken a walk to clear his mind of something, but when he returned he told her that they should reach port in a couple of hours.

“Come with me, you have to see the view,” Kitt said. Katt followed him to the outside deck. The water was a brilliant texture of foaming waves in a mixture of blue, green, and white. Katt held the railing with both hands and stared at the water speechlessly. Kitt leaned his elbows on the railing, causing him to bend slightly, while Katt stood straight. He stared unparticularly into the endless sea. His mind seemed to be drifting with the tide.

Katt pulled her eyes away from the scenery, and focused on Kitt, deep in thought. It took him a long time to realize that she was looking at him. He just smiled, stood up straight, and mumbled something about taking a walk.

The two walked along the boats edge, clinging to the railing, and enjoying the salt air. Katt’s mind was on Kitt. She couldn’t figure out what Kitt was obsessing over. The sea must have reminded him of something, though Katt couldn’t even guess what. Kitt and his brother had been who-knows-where together, and Katt could only imagine that it had something to do with that.

Later on, the crew asked them to sit down while the boat pulled into the harbor.

Kitt grabbed their bags and Katt followed him off the boat once it had been secured to land.

“Welcome to England,” he said as they stepped onto solid ground. Katt hadn’t the slightest clue where they were going to next. The first thing they did was walk away from the harbor and into the city.

While stopping for a short brake, she asked, “Where to next?”

“I know some people just out of England. We’ll catch a bus and walk,” was his answer.

They continued to walk for awhile, until Katt’s instinct of curiosity caught up with her.

“Kitt, what have you been thinking about? You’ve seemed dazed since we boarded the ship,” she said.

He gazed forward with one of his dazed looks before answering, “I can’t help thinking about...”. when he didn’t finish his sentence, Katt pryed further.

“Can’t help thinking about what?” she asked.

He breathed in deeply and sighed even deeper. He was silent for so long that Katt was about to ask the question again. It seemed he had forgotten what she’d said. But he answered eventually.

“About how much you remind me of her,” he said, and left it at that. Katt was expecting him to say something further, explaining his words, but he stayed silent.

The girl’s curiosity was clawing away at her, but she restrained herself enough to leave the subject alone.

Their travel went just as Kitt had said, onto a bus, then walking. The trip was made mostly in silence. They continued to travel toward the direction Kitt trudged. Katt was unsure of the whole situation, and her mind wouldn’t leave her alone about it. As hard as it was on her personality, she decided to wait until he spoke. Surely he must have his reasons.

The sun was beginning to set when they reached their destination. They walked up to a small house and Kitt knocked on a door.
