Stunning...

For once, Varian was displaying any of his usual standoffish behavior - but it wasn't because he'd had some sudden change of heart. No, it was because he was simply too entranced to pay any attention to his behavior. The boy had decided to pay a visit to the museum today - and had promptly wandered into the section with a 'visiting' collection of expensive jewels.

It was one of those that he seemed so fascinated by, and it took a few moments for him to regain his poise. The item in question was a jeweled necklace, with rubies that seemed larger then any he had seen in a store, before - in his opinion, stunning.

Giving one last glance at it, he moved onto the next display case.

He needed a day to relax, in his opinion - things had been a bit...strange...lately. Even so, he wasn't here alone - although he had certainly tried to come alone. He had seen noticed someone familiar following at a distance, however - wandering through the museum on the same course. It irritated him, but he hadn't tried to lose him yet.

That had already failed twice.

Nereida plodded drearily through the museum, glancing at the cases of gems without much interest. Her mother was back at the start of the exhibit, intent on reading the descriptions on every single item, but Nereida wasn't too interested in these particular objects. She wanted to find the room about ocean life and marine dinosaurs and extinct sharks, and she knew it was somewhere since she had seen an advertisement for it in the lobby.

A case of what looked to be highly-polished seashells set in platinum caught her eye, and she went to investigate. The pearly blue interior of an abalone set into a diadem glittered at her and Nereida thought, now that's something I would like to wear.

The information card said, This set of abalone-inlaid tiaras was recovered from the sea-floor far off the coast. It is believed they originated in the city of Atlantis before its destruction.

Now there was something cool, thought Nereida, imagining what she thought Atlantis to look like. Now that would be a cool place to live! Gambino was nice, but Atlantis! How cool would that be? And even if it was just a bunch of ruins under the ocean, she'd still like to live there. There were times when she thought she felt more of the sea than of the land. Absolutely would she not mind to live beneath it's waves. (Not that mother ever would let her.)

Though roughly similar in age, the two Layden children strolling through the exhibit of jewels and gems were anything but alike. Bright as always, Yana was cheerfully grinning, her mismatched eyes flitting from one case to the next, her draconic nature making her especially inclined to liking things of a shiny nature. Sure, she had come to the museum for a little lesson in Egyptian history, but a pitstop here at the collection of gems was no problem for her.

While Yana moved with the gawkiness of a girl moving from child to adolescent, Kayce prowled like a feline on the hunt. Her pale eyes darted about, finally settling on one particular object: a sword, encrusted with lapis lazuli. She tilted her head to one side as Yana came up beside her.

"Pretty..." the deaf girl commented, lightly nudging her sister with her arm. "C'mon. There's more this way," she added, her voice tainted by a slight slur and lisp that no amount of speech therapy could cure.

Giving the sword a last look, Kayce padded on alongside her taller sibling. While Yana was momentarily distracted by a many-layered crown of coral and pearl, Kayce chanced a glance at those gathered around the next case over. One finger idly stroked the scar lines on her cheek as she made her way toward one familiar face.

"Nereida?"

Hearing her name, the green girl turned and smiled. "Hiya, Kayce!" she exclaimed. And then, pointing to the other girl who seemed to be Kayce's companion, "Who's that?"

She couldn't hide her enthusiasm at seeing her friend again, especially since she had basically been cooped up since her discovery of Gage and Dierdre's vanishment. "Is your mother here?" She pointed towards the end of the exhibit, where Silverah was examining a case of necklaces. "My mom's over that way. She's being slow."

Nereida was practically bouncing with excitement. Wow! The day had just gone from good to great!

Kayce, experiencing one of her rare good and friendly moods, smiled in return to Nereida. Her hand moved away from the scars on her cheek, and her posture straightened. "Hello. My mother isn't here. It is just me and Yana." Her pale eyes flicked after Nereida's gesture. "My sister."

Yana, having finished staring at the crown, headed over by Kayce's side. She started a bit at the sight of Nereida but relaxed just as quickly, recognizing Kayce's less predatory posture as a sign that this person--girl?--was safe. "Hi."

Sighing quietly, Kayce proceeded to make introductions. "Nereida, this is my sister, Yana. Yana, this is Nereida, my friend." The fae made sure to turn her face toward her deaf sister upon speaking, to ensure the girl could read her lips.

"Oh," said Neredia, still smiling. "Hi, Yana! Too bad about your mother. Mom woulda probably liked to see her."

She motioned to the coral pieces in the case. "Didja see these yet? They're from Atlantis, supposedly!"

Yana quirked a grin. "Yeah, I think she wanted to come, but the babies were kind of fussy, and she's tired. We were going to wait, but she told us to go ahead. She'll come with us some other time." The deaf girl's voice had a slight accent to it, a combination of a lisp and a slur, a testament to the fact that she couldn't hear what she was saying.

Offering up a simple shrug to punctuate the explanation, Kayce glanced over at the coral pieces, looking mildly interested. "Atlantis? I've read a few books about it..." She stared into the case for another few minutes and then turned her gaze back to Nereida. "I liked the sword over there, with all of the jewels on it. Useless, but very sparkly!" The fae girl offered up a rare grin.

Nereida noted Yana's accent, but didn't think anything of it in particular. "I dunno much about it, either. I just think it'd be cool."

She chuckled slightly. It felt so good to actually be talking to people her own age again!

"Mom hasn't let me out much lately, ever since Gage and Dierdre vanished. I'm not sure why she doesn't restrict Darsais the same age, but she's a teenager now and no fun. I miss being older than her."

"I haven't got as far as the sword yet, but I saw some armor back in the other direction that looked like it was pretty cumbersome."

Yana looked thoughtful. "Atlantis would be nice to visit. Just be hard to breathe underwater..." she mused, more for her own ears than anyone else's.

Kayce quirked a small grin at Nereida. "I miss being older than Yana and Eowyn too. Mum doesn't restrict us much. Just Yana, since she decided to hang out with vampires." She smirked at her taller sibling and then turned surprised eyes to Nereida. "Gage is gone? And Dierdre?" The fact that Dierdre was gone didn't bother her greatly, but Gage would be sorely missed.

Completely missing the significant exchange, Yana rolled her eyes at Kayce. "Just one vampire," she grumbled, still feeling a bit peeved that her more wayward sibling had less rules to follow.

"Yeah," nodded Nereida. "And their mom, and their little brother Jack. I don't know where they went."

Jack was pretty cool. He'd loved her boat, and he was a pirate. She missed the little kid, even if she hadn't seen him since he and Darsais were both toddlers.

"Vampires?" she asked Yana. "What're they like?"

Kayce was shocked into appropriate silence for a moment. She had never expected Dierdre and Gage to vanish. Dierdre could disappear, but she did wish for Gage back. "Jack? Was Jack a fae too?" she inquired, her brows furrowing as she searched her memory for a name.

Surprised by the question, Yana flicked out her wings and then settled them against her back again. "Vampires? Errrr... some of them are kind of nasty. A few of them aren't so bad. One of them is going to teach me some magic." She grinned.

Nereida shook her head. "No, Jack was a kybernetik, like Darsais. You might not have met him."

She was a little startled when Yana flicked her wings, having not noticed them before, but brushed it off. "Teach you magic? Cool. I wish I knew magic."

Kayce nodded in understanding. "Oh, like Eowyn, then. I don't think I ever met him." I could've done without meeting Dierdre too. She tactfully neglected to mention her less-than-friendly feelings toward the over-tall fae. She glanced over at Yana, shaking her head minutely. "Magic is limited, though. Can't beat a good weapon."

Thankfully for Yana's good mood, the deaf girl didn't see what her sister said. "Yeah, a little magic. You have some kind of power too, don't you? Kayce said that all the fae have a power."
PostPosted: Mon Sep 03, 2007 3:21 pm

"I can breathe underwater," shrugged Nereida, "But that's not a power. That's just how I am."

She sighed heavily. "If I've got magic, I haven't found it yet."

Kayce gave Nereida a diffident shrug. "Don't worry. Neither have I. I don't really know if I'd have any use for it either." She was privately of the opinion that wits and a good blade could solve most problems. Magic and 'powers' were not really necessary.

Yana's expression displayed obvious envy. "Lucky. I wish I could breathe underwater. I can't even fly."
