"Every time." Terryn stopped him before they entered the dining hall and pulled him close for a deep, last minute kiss.
"And you to my daughter." The earl sighed, taking his seat and waving one of the servants over to do away with the lids. "I hear them coming."

A few minutes later, Marcus grinned a little sheepishly at the earl. "I--did not get to greet you properly when I arrived," he said, offering his hand to shake. The Duchess sat down at last. "No, I daresay you were occupied with more important things," she said waspishly, glancing sideways at Terryn.

The earl nodded, choosing to ignore his friend's chidings and giving him a firm shake. "Come, take a seat."
Terryn's gaze fell to the floor as she took her seat, trying not to look too directly at anyone.

Marcus complied. He was at once overwhelmed by his grandmother pushing about half the table's contents towards him. The action reminded him of his own push exactly a year ago, when the host had caught fire. "I'll take it one at a time, thank you."

After a few minutes, the earl glanced at the duchess meaningfully, clearing his throat none too indiscreetly as he glanced at his daughter.

The Duchess blinked, before shaking her head very slightly and demurely. Now was not the place, nor the time. Double teaming was an effective strategy only if the issue had already been brought up. It was best to first approach a delicate matter like this one in private.
Marcus had turned rather quiet, eating slowly and carefully. He was taking extra pains to be well-mannered, even though he really was just as polite as he had been. He made eye contact only with Terryn between vegetables.

Terryn was just as reserved. She was eating very slowly, almost as though she was afraid to move her utensils too quickly, lest she be seen and interrogated. She wasn't feeling to good about the duchess.

At long last, a sufficient amount of food had been tucked away. During this time, the Duchess had been thinking--she rather thought it was one of her strong suits--and had come to a plan. Terryn was most likely going to stay the night over. It bothered the Duchess, but it did not surprise her. "Terryn, I suppose that you will be returning first thing in the morning?" she asked warmly, as though she meant it.

Terryn glanced up at her, taking a second to realize that she was being spoken to. "Oh...oh I suppose. I would not wish to stay too long and spoil your reunion."

Marcus frowned without realizing it, and he looked up at Terryn curiously.
The Duchess smiled. "How thoughtful of you. But I wouldn't want to impose on you, my friend," she added to the earl. "Why, Terryn would have to be in the coach nearly all night, wouldn't she?"

The earl nodded. "It is rather chilly. Terryn, darling, are you quite sure you wish to stay out there all night?"
"Well I..." Terryn blinked, having an ominous feeling that she knew what was going on.

"Very chilly," chimed in the Duchess. "A girl could catch her death being outside all night. It was cloudy today, too. It may even rain."
Marcus looked intrigued. Could it be possible that the Duchess was inadvertently suggesting what they'd planned anyway?

"Take a guest room? Oh no, sweetheart. They are renovating." The earl looked at her sympathetically. "I saw it before."

Marcus put down his fork. Audibly. Startled, the Duchess turned to look at him. "You two are absolutely shameless," he told them, very seriously, before breaking into a very small smile. "Really absolutely shameless," he repeated.

The earl blinked, looking dumbfounded. "Why, I have no idea what you mean..." He glanced at the duchess and shrugged. "Do you know what he is talking about?"
