Spartan Spartan.
His actual age is something over two thousand years.
Didn't like continuously slaughtering the innocent, was exiled and went into a life as a gladiator to get by using his Spartan training and dicipline.
It's made for a soldier that while get in group combat from living life in a Spartan army, to now being good in single melee from life as a gladiator.

Athens had more of an emphasis on the individual's freedoms and a stronger economy. There's a lot of reasons why they were greater.
I'm not going to contest that.
However, an exiled Spartan soldier makes for an interesting storyline.
