*Bard accepts the glass, lost in thought. He continues to stare at the sword. At last, he sets it down on the bar*

*Luke walks over and goes to grab the beer bottle ... Then he stops. He waits a tick, looks to Tavin, and he nods, understanding what he means.*
Yeah, about that - I tried that. In fact, I would say - I've consistently tried that.

*Tavin sighs*
Let me guess. Are you having difficulty picturing the thing in the place that you want it to be?

Well, at first, yeah. *Luke says defensively.* Look, it's not like I haven't thought about this. Do you wanna see what I got?
*Luke goes over to where he dropped his bookbag at the door. He looks inside, and doesn't find what he's looking for.*
Alright, it's not in there. But I got a book from the library - a physics book. I read it just to learn the physics of how this could even work.
I don't do that sort of thing just for kicks. It's not like I haven't invested time in this.

*Tavin shakes his head*
The problem is that powers in here are not based off of science, but on faith. Belief is a more defining factor here than gravity. That may be where your problem lies, Luke. You can't just picture the item is where you want it to be. You need to know that its where you want it to be. You need to have faith in your ability.

*Luke flinches as Tavin calls him out. Had he been more self-aware, he would have realized that he was acting out of his own vulnerability. But he's not more self-aware.*
*So now it's my fault? ******** a bunch of that. Luke's pissed, but he keeps his voice level and to the point.*
You know what? I don't know if you stopped to think about this. But what you're asking me to do in here is physically impossible where I'm from, except inside comic books. If I DID have faith in this ability outside here, I'd be takin' my meds every morning right before I put on my straight jacket.
So you might give me a little credit - if I'm a little skeptical about how this works in a place that up until recently I couldn't even prove existed.

Well, while I can understand your train of thought, the fact that you CAN'T prove that this place exists, and yet know that it does should be a good indicator that it doesn't work by the rules that you know of. Besides, I'm not asking you to believe you can do these things otside of this place. It won't work outside of here anyway. However, by your own reasoning, if this place exists like some sort of fantasy comic, it shouldn't be difficult to believe fantastical things exist in that comic.
*Tavin smiles at Luke*
If its a comic, does it matter if you believe the concrete block there hero lifts is ten tons or twenty tons? Besides, if you need more proof that such things are possible here, just think about Maggie or Bard........ or Cora. They can all do the impossible in this place, as you have witnessed yourself. How hard can it be to believe that if they have that kind of power that you can't have that kind of power as well? Or is it that you cannot have faith that any of them really exist either?

*Bard is totally lost in thought staring at the sword. He picks it up again, turning it this way and that. Suddenly, he realizes he has an untouched martini in his hand. He sets it down on the counter, and with a brief glance at Tavin and Luke, he wanders off with the sword to the library*

*Luke's response is on the coattails of Tavin's.*
I started to believe that this place was real when I got my face knocked in by the Seraphim. Then when I watched him do it to Maggie and her kid, it got a little more real.
I took that book out, and I practice in here every chance I get - because I'll be goddamned if I'm gonna just sit here when he does it again.
*Luke doesn't say it - but he thinks - That's as real as it gets.*

*Tavin nods, his smile genuine*
That's good. Because when it comes right down to it, I don't know what will happen. I swear that I will give my life to protect everyone here, but...
*Tavin's smile falls*
... I'm not sure that will be enough. That's why its important that you guys know what you can. Every edge you can get will help.
*Tavin drifts off for a moment lost in thought*
Look, Luke. I can't help you have faith in your ability, but I DO have something that just MAY help you with the visualizing.

*Have an edge? Know everything we can? Tavin's never given him answers before - not like this - and never good ones. Luke starts to wonder what's up... what's made Tavin so talkative all of a sudden. Then decides to worry about that later.*
*He opens his mouth to start asking questions, when Tavin mentions something that would help.*
Yeah? What's that?

*Tavin laughs*
Like I said. You still have to have faith. OH! First....
*Tavin takes his index finger and presses it on the tabletop. After a second, smoke starts to rise, and as he lifts his finger, a round burn mark is left on the tabletop*
There. Now you know which table to use this with. And here are the pictures.
*Tavin pulls out two pictures and places them side by side in front of Luke. One picture is of a November 2006 issue of Maxim laying on the edge of some nondescript wooden counter, shot from above and at an angle, as if leaning over it from the side. The next is a picture of the same magazine on a familiar table at the same angle. A table with a round burn mark on it*

*Luke grabs the pictures and brings them to eye level. Maxim magazine 2006. Good to know they'd still be in production.... That part was great. The other part freaked him out. It was on the table in the Brink where Tavin just put the burn mark. The other looked like it was taken somewhere in the guest rooms or the library.... But definitely in the Brink.*
*It unnerves him - in a deep, gnawing way.*
This is to help me "visualize"?
