We found $5/bucket cherries this weekend, so now I am dealing with cherries. We froze a big bag, then I made some apple-cherry butter, and now I am canning 3 jars of them (or, I will can them, once this ridiculous water starts boiling!). I'm planning on making some juice too, for fun and then cooking down the pulp for more fruit butter.

How well do cherries freeze?

My peas are starting to come in now. My carrots are still piddly though which is disappointing. neutral

The hydrangea my Oma gave me has two big blooms on it. The lily I bought for cheap last year has two beautiful pink flowers. The other one I bought ($4.99/$3.99 instead of $15) will probably open up in the next few days.

I finished the baby blanket for my co-worker. It's okay, I wish it was better. I'm going to get some yarn and start crocheting my friend a scarf. I owe him one from last year.

I tried to go swimming the other day. Lol, I got to the beach and everything but chickened out the last moment. sweatdrop

If we can find a cat sitter for the weekend, we're going to go to a ghost town way north of here and camp. My boyfriend has been promising me to go here for like, ten years. Finally. So close.

Not too badly, but you have to pit them first.
We left some from last year's picking in the freezer until just a couple of months ago and they were fine.

They lose a fair bit of juice while thawing, so they're good on/in yogurt or ice cream, or for baking with or smoothies. Not so much for just eating as cherries.

I believe it's considered a better way to preserve them than by canning, as they keep the flavour better when unheated. They still lose the structure a bit though.

Good to know!

I went car camping Saturday night. It was good, though we got there quite early, 4pm, so there wasn't much to do. We're so use to wasting time looking at stuff on the net that it's a shocker not to have it anymore.

We went to a place called Goldbridge, population: 41. I've been wanting to go there for years and finally went! It was interesting. I would have loved to take more pictures, but I feel uncomfortable taking pictures of people's homes and stuff. There was another town, 60 people, just a few minutes drive and it was really interesting. You'll have a dilapidated 1930's house right beside a nice purple, or green, 1930's house. It was really eclectic and neat. I kinda wish I spent more time, but it's not actually that far away, so a day trip is totally feasible!

Boyfriend bought me a new laptop. It's pretty sweet.

It's finally raining, and raining a lot. I accidentally left my ficus outside... she's going to be p*ssed. I forgot to tell my boyfriend to bring her back in before he left for work and now it's pelting down rain. Eeek.

Ficus is all okay! Ficus' can be really picky about temperature fluctuations and drop their leaves, but she's all okay.

I got a keyboard cover for my new laptop. It's purple. I also got oodles of yarn - have three projects that I need to get working on. Also did some more yoga. Crow/crane pose is pretty good. I wish I could go from chaturanga back to plank, but I just don't have the oomph to do it. Was never good at push ups. Tomorrow I'm going take a break from yogaing and focus on some P90X for a while.

I moved my first batch of chokecherry wine into the secondary fermenter. It smells nice!

Hey guys. How are you doing? I am still learning about homesteading stuff, though I did not put in a garden this year, been too busy with other family matters.

The updated answer is Pretty Darn Well 4laugh

I used up a bunch in a crumble and it was "very good" apparently. Definitely worth freezing.

I've started and have been knitting my blanket project for my grandparents. Grandmother taught me how to knit and I thought since I've learnt so much these last few years, I'd make her a gift.

Attempt to grow Arugula was... ok... I'm still having a hard time figuring out which leaves to harvest.

My attempt to grow spinach from seed in a pot...failure, I think. Its been 3 weeks and they still haven't put on their first true leaf!

I have a new yard residence! A stray cat has started to come and scare away the squirrels. I started feeding her at the end of July, and she only comes if I mew to her, though now she'll come if I say "Yao!". Though now that the squirrels are no longer scampering about, now I need to figure out who to keep Yao out of the raised bed...yes I understand its loose and fluffy, but that does not mean it can be your toilet.

Any advise on arugula, spinach and cat in the raised bed?

I've heard chili peppers/hot chili peppers can prevent cats from going in an area. Black pepper should work too, and is cheaper usually.

That's good to know! I'd like to get a deep freeze in the upcoming years and do some freezing. I've never had cherry in crumble before (usually raspberries) so will have to give that a try.

I grew mixed greens this year and just picked whatever looked tasty and left the rest.

I'm not sure how your raised beds are, but the neighbour's cat would roll around in my catnip and I ended up putting chicken wire around it. It's in a large pot and I just got some chicken wire from Home Depot and rolled it around the pot and tired it with some wire. The catnip hasn't been touched since.

You could nail a sturdy piece of wood (2x4?) to one corner, screw the wire into that, wrap the wire around and make a latch with two or three nails to hook the wire to. Just unhook the wire from the nails and you'll have access to the beds.

---

What I've been up to:
- harvesting catnip for this year's cat toys. I've given two to a customer and she was over the moon. She's a lovely woman - we're very similar and have a good laugh at each other.

- started up crocheting again. Have a scarf to make, another scarf/cowl (not sure) and a cozy for my harddrive.

- fried the mother board to my new laptop. It's about a month old and I plugged in one of my drives and dead like doornail. Whoops. Thankfully it's under warranty and it's free to fix.

- made new friends - a guy who's my age and invests in metals and other neat non-paper money things. He's a real cool cat.

- have started "seriously" collecting stamps. I have a couple overseas that I'm doing an exchange with and a gentleman down in the states. It's a lot of fun and a very welcoming community. Canada will be releasing the 75th anniversary of Superman stamps out tomorrow and I have five booklets on hold. ninja

- nearing the end of my first month of doing P90X again. I can do 50+ push ups now and I can do pull ups starting from the ground with no chair help. Plyo is "easy" now and while I still struggle a bit with the second portion (a lot of one leg stands) I can do pretty much all of YogaX straight through. I'm pretty good at crow pose too. cool

- my brother and his friend came and visited. I haven't seen him in over a decade... so it was interesting. His friend was a hoot. We took them out to a high end restaurant and he was STOKED. He was like "THE PLATES ARE EVEN WARM!" Absolutely adorable. My brother brought my fins too - they're hot pink and they're hard to find, so I'm super excited about that. Need to find out if the lake here is still good for swimming or if it's too cold.

Nice! Are you using the jugs that they do for regular red wine? How much longer until it's drinkable?

Oh.. the chicks in your signature are cute as buttons.

I bought myself a beautiful hibiscus over the weekend. Repotted with some sea soil compost and I've had four blooms. She's beautiful. crying
