"Well...he had a glass ball kinda thingy but I think it was filled with water. But he dropped it and it crashed and shattered and then these droplets of water started making the mon..man...rays." He didn't like the first part of that word, it was hard for him to remember how it was said. "He made sharks too but they wouldn't hurt us 'cause they were just magic. He said he could control them all 'cause I wanted to know if they could choose to stay when you wanted them gone and he said no."
He merely wrinkled his nose when his father messed up his hair and then hearing his tone change to that 'I'm saying something important and you better be listening' tone, he glanced up at him with wide, innocent eyes. "You mean 'cause I break things?" And his little shoulders slumped and the light in his eyes all but died. Because there was an 'if I say' which wasn't a yes yet and more often than not turned out to be no if he couldn't comply with the terms. "I don't mean too, it just kinda happens." He frowned and shook his head, his voice getting much quieter. "How come, Daddy? Why doesn't Khai accidentally break things too? Why is it just me?" he looked down at his hands, resting on his knees a moment and then back up at his father, waiting for an answer.
"Great, that's just what I needed to know. Just casually mention it to Sevilin that Malikhai requested that Kariel spend the night. They've done it before and Sevilin trusts you. I just need one night and I will pay you back just as soon as you tell me what you want. A cinnamon cake every day for a month, you got it. A weekend away with Malik? Just say the word." And she was stopping there because if she kept going, she'd end up promising something that wasn't anywhere near equal payment for the favor she was requesting.

"you wouldn't break it, even if it is old. but it's not just becuase it's heavy and sharp. Malvolence is a..special sword. inside the metal is the soul of a very old, very powerful vampire. his name is T'haen."
Taking out the blade, letting it do it's thing and looking at it glowing red and pulsing.
'that red glow is his soul in the blade...feeding on the blood that is spilled on it. and mine...see?"
showing his son the hilt where the skull hilt bites into his hand.
"T'haen feeds on me, and in return I can read the thoughts of others, my strength is increased, my speed and agility...my magical power as well. The blade is addictive, and tries to control the person who picks it up. it wants bloodshed. to feed."
Putting it away again.
"that's why you're too young now. but in time, as you get older, and stronger, maybe you will inherit this blade, like I did from my father. But I do have something I will show you, and you can't tell mom about it, okay?"

"Manta." He never said that the boys words were wrong, merely repeated them correctly for him so he could hear how they were said and could get it the next time around. But telling him they were wrong? Never. Though he gave a sigh and shook his head, there was that little sad look that he practically couldn't stand.
He pat at his son's back, rubbing lightly in soothing motion. "I know you don't mean to break things and you only break them when you're upset." Hm, could he explain this in a simple way? Well he could try. "Well...you see, me and Zahara are very good at magic, it's in our blood. And since you are us put together, you are then very very good at magic. It's already inside you in a large amount. When you're little and very very good at magic it...gets out. Mostly when you feel strongly about something."
Petting at his hair lightly. "But no one is mad at you when that happens, you can't help it. You just have to learn to control it, or you and other people can get hurt. Understand why I'm careful to let you learn with Malikhai?"
"Tempt me with cinnamon, and alone grown up time with my husband, how clever of you." Giving a chuckle as she talked to Zahara...well more of talked to the rock in her hand, but who was being technical. "Really it's no issue, well, as long as they get along for the night but they usually do anyway. And I'll just subtly mention it to Sevilin, no worries there. Is that all?" Personally she didn't want to know what Zahara was planning, though then she remembered something. "Oh I remember now, I wanted to mention something to you about Arthur before you go."
And so like his mother in learning new things, his head habitually tilted to the side as he listened and absorbed, breifly looking to the blade as it was unsheathed and showed itself off...and eyes widened every now and then before he squinted in that 'well that's odd' way to him. "A vampire lives in it...and you let it bite you?" He righted his head and looked up as if he was talking to his brain to make sure he had it right before talking. Well no wonder mommy didn't like it, it bit daddy and liked blood.
He wrinkled his nose. "But I don't want it to bite me. Biting hurts, like when Circa bit me." Yes, he learned not to pull on coq dragon tails easily. Though those thoughts were almost thrown out the window at a new prospect put before him and he brightened. "What?!" Oh wait, mom was mentioned. "She'll be angry if she finds out?" Though it probably didn't matter in the end now did it? Nope, dad was going to show him something.Just had to be hush hush about it.

"this doesn't hurt. it's not bad. but you'll understand more when your older. and she might not be really..angry, persay..but annoyed possibly."
So he picked his son up and put him down, taking his hand and walking him to Broog and Tremor's workshop...and then over to a chest after getting a set of keys from Broog.
Then opening it it up, an dlooking at his son again.
"remember, no telling mom."
then taking out a small breastplate, bracers, and legplates in shiny mithril with black enameled etched designs in it...and a mithril blade, a child sized replica of ebony.
"I had these made for you. they so that broog and tremor can learn what designs and how best to fit things to you, so that as you get bigger, they can make things better for you."

He gave a skeptical look. Mom angry and mom annoyed were quite almost the same thing to him, they entailed the same series of actions almost. But besides that he happily let his father lead him by the hand through hallways, and in fact this was a section he didn't recall ever being in, so that made it all the more fun, right? Though keys always caused intrigue now didn't they?
A little nod those as he waited, almost anxiously. A little smirk and a nod. "No telling mom." Mimicked back in affirmation of his understanding and waiting some more before shiny metal delight was his reward. Oh wait...wait he knew what that was he had seen that all before, daddy wore something similar sometimes.
"Armor!" Bingo, just like daddy's...minus sharp pointy parts. And then to make the little surprise even better, "and a real sword!" Practically bouncing with glee before latching to Malik's leg in a hug. Well wasn't this just making his day? First he got to pick what he wanted to learn magic wise and now he had armor and a sword...just like daddy's. "Thank you, bel'la dos, diola lle!" Oh yes, happy indeed, just bursting with it, shown as he threw languages together again.
Oh wait, there was a downside to this wasn't there. "I can't play with it can I?" Because there was no horseplay down here, and well if mommy wasn't to know, then he couldn't strut around in front of her could he? Which meant he also couldn't show Zykariel and well a lot of other 'couldn'ts'. Well darn, that was a damper on his fun.

As his father began to rub his back and speak Zykariel laid his head against his chest and sighed. Sometimes he hated the way he had to be super careful when he got upset. He still remembered the first time he'd broken one of Zara's glasses, he'd never forget the look on her face when the one she was holding just shattered. Her eyes had closed briefly and then when she opened them back up, she'd just shaken her head and started cleaning up the glass. It was as though everyone else understood it but him.
But once again his head tilted back and studied the face he'd looked up to for the past three years of his life. "So it's because you and Zara are so good at magic? That's why I break stuff and can't control it very well? That doesn't seem very fair, Daddy." After all Malikhai's parents could do magic too and Malikhai didn't seem to have any trouble with his. But then Malikhai's parents weren't very good at magic. At least that's the way he was being told. "I guess so. Does that mean I can't do magic when he's around?" His still had that quiet tone that signalled that he was upset, not angry, upset. "I don't want to hurt Khai, Daddy, and if that means I can't do magic, then I can't." Trying so hard to be brave about this and accept it but he wanted to learn magic. He wanted to be able to wave a hand and conjure something or spin a spell and have it work out or even do ruens like his father could.
"I tend to think of myself that way," she chuckled as well and nodded before realizing that Piper couldn't actually see her. "Yes, I think that will do it." Wait Arthur? "What about him...?" She was praying she wasn't about to be lectured on anything she didn't want to hear about and praying that Piper wasn't going to begin a topic considered a hot spot in their relationship.

"You can wear the armor, but your right, you can't play with the sword. however, if you feel up to it, we can arrange some time I'm sure for you to come down here with me and I can show you some tricks that I know to use a sword. How's that for a deal? mom may be a bit annoyed that I made you some armor, but that's not a problem. but we both know she wouldn't be happy with you have a real sword just yet. that's why we gotta keep that secret."
A grin to his son, taking his hand.
"come over here and meet Broog. he did all teh designs on your armor."
Broog turned around, the big ogre looking at the little elf, and gave his big grin.
"yous moost be da lil kiddie of da masters! Hewwo!"
waving his big hand.
"I'm Broog. happys to sees youz finallys."
Big shake of his head.

"Right, so essentially, it's our fault you see. And I'm sorry for that, but at the same time I'm not. You see, when you learn to control it and when you're older, it is going to prove to be a great ally to you." But he shook his head at the boy. "No, you can still do magic son, you just have to learn what is too much and what is just right. And that can be taught to you. You know how you feel all tired and numb after it happens when you get upset? That's too much. You just want to feel tingly."
Hm, yes, Sevilin was feeling a bit guilty about it. Magic ran strong in both of the child's parents. "And one day, Malikhai may have just as much power as you do. It all depends on how much someone pays attention to thier magic skills. And some people hide what they can really do." Another pat to the boy's hair. "Don't worry, Malikhai isn't made of glass, he won't break. You'll be able to do magic around him and not worry about hurting him. But if you're going to learn with him then we have to teach you what's enough and what's too much."
"Well he just said something and I wanted to make sure that you knew what it meant. You know how he calls you 'mela'? Well...I don't know if you know, and you don't have to remind me how your relationship is, I'm just mentioning this because I feel obligated to. You do know that mela is surface elvish for 'love', don't you?" Biting her bottom lip and almost waiting for a bad reaction or an accusation of meddling.
Okay, half of something was better than nothing now wasn't it? And he could strut his little stuff and just have a good old time in his commonplace emulation of his father. But still hugging to his leg, swimming in his happy little time here. "Deal!" And he had learned already that deal were good, and he was good at them. At least he thought he was good at him, his parents may of just been humbling him.
" 'Sides, you always make mommy understand." Mom never stayed too mad or annoyed for too long. "I can play with my wooden one still." So no problem there and hey, he was going to learn real sword stuff too! Mom couldn't be mad at that...well not too much. Though being plucked off his father's leg he was led by the hand over to Broog. He kinda knew Broog, kinda didn't. Had at least heard his name over a dozen times.
Watching him, he took a moment to decide whether he was going to be shy or not to Broog. A look up to his father and he decided that he was going to be brave this time, thus that posture of puffing out his little chest some and raising his chin. Wasn't that adorable? Though voice and demeanor didn't match action, the tone and look of a child doing that. "Hellp Broog, I'm Malikhai." Giving a wave back with his free hand. "You make really really neat things Broog." Because hey...armor and sword. And he knew somehow that Broog made all of mommy's jewelry and a bunch of other shiny metal things.

"It's okay, Daddy, I don't blame you or Zara. It was just an accident." A pat to his chest in soothing manner before the child grew solemn again. "I don't like it. I get cranky and stuff." Usually he felt the need to crawl into someone's lap and cuddle for a while too though sometimes he expressed his emotions in ways that got him sent to his room. Those were never very fun times.
But that pattern of thoughts was interrupted by him getting excited again. "So I can do magic then? With Malikhai?" well that just made him happy and he threw his arms around his father's neck and hugged him tightly. "Khai will be really happy. I don't think he wanted to learn alone." Then a brief pause as it sank in what he was being told. "You mean I gotta learn something else before I start learning that? Is it going to be hard?"
Zahara wasn't sure what Piper was going to say but when she did speak, she hadn't expected that. She was so startled she put her hand down on the hot burner she'd used to thicken the cream. It didn't take long for her to realize what she'd done and she yanked her hand back, screaming bloody murder. "Every deity in this plane and any other be damned! Damned! Damned! Damned!" Shaking her hand rapidly, she thrust it under cold water from the tap and then used a cloth to dab at it. "I...I didn't know that. Surface elvish for...love..." her voice trailed off after saying that word and she shook her head lightly. What had she gotten herself into? "Well, thank you for telling me Piper?"

Oh how the child didn't know just how correct that statement was. Though he was proof that not all accidents were horrible ones. "Well that's because your mind and body get exhausted, like when you can't reverie and you feel the same way. And he merely smiled and shook his head, hugging his son back. "Yes you can learn magic with Malikhai." After all, he doubted Malik or Piper would leave thier son down there alone to learn, one would always be with them and those two knew about Zykariel's... control issue.
He ruffled his hair again and chuckled. "Don't worry, Malikhai is going to have to learn the same thing too. No one can do magic without first being able to control what power they are born with. Bad things happen if you don't. So you two will be on the same track, no problem." A little nod to his son. "And it's easy to learn, I taught silly old Arthur and look how good he is now, and when Zahara was learning runes, I taught her too. Which means I can teach you no problem. See?"
Piper herself jumped at the scream and subsequent line of curses, actually dropping the link stone she had and watched it boucne a little ways across the floor. Okay...meddling bad. Though she blinked at it a moment before retrieving it, listening to Zahara's voice. Didn't sound too happy, well that answered questions now didn't it? "Um...right...no problem." Sure, no problem, yeah right. "Yes so...that's all then I guess. I'll just go tell the menfolk that Zykariel is staying."

Broog lit up like a kid at christmas, and malik only grinned and leaned on teh wall, he knew what was coming. Broog got himself up, and grabbed his famous chest, and dragged it over.
"Youz likes Broog's shinies! Broog show you lots of shinies.."
Popping open the top and there it was. a chest full of glittering gold, silver, mithril, and all manner of precious gemstones. collars, rings, bracelts, necklaces, anklets, earrings, navel rings, chain earrings and toe rings, broaches and of course leashes as well.
"you likes?"

"And I don't like it then either Daddy. It's not a pleasant feeling at all." He felt itchy but not itchy and tired but not tired and just all around bad. It was like he had a hundred different maladies and no cure for any of them. Nope, not pleasant at all.
Wait a minute... "You taught Zara runes? She didn't know them already?" he hadn't known that. He'd just figured that she had learned them the same way his father had. Which come to think of it, he didn't know how his father had learned them either. Hmm, might be question time. "Well if you taught Zara and Mr. Arthur, then I should be a piece of cake. I'm a lot smaller." He grinned at his father then that curiosity appeared once again. "Was it hard teaching them? Mother doesn't really like not knowing how to do things..."
"Mmmhmm. I'd appreciate that..." she forced out, holding the towel over her burned hand. She deactivated the link stone, wishing for a few moments to just sit down and think. But sitting down became pacing and soon she found herself opening a bottle of wine to help her deal with this. "Does that mean he...loves me?" And this is the very reason why drow stayed away from surface elves. Why did they feel the obvious need to complicate things? A towel in one hand, clutched in her fist, a glass of wine in another, she muttered to herself as she paced across the kitchen, deep in thought.

Oh you could see the wheels turning in his head, working in thoughts that little elves had and often had a use for. After all, the favorite game of late had been pirates and what did pirates have? Treasure, that was what and what could this be called? Treaure. Usually when they played it was with pretend treasure, or cookies...wouldn't the game be so much more fun with some real sparkly treasure stuff to use? Why yes, yes it would.
Thus he brought out his manipulation skills that he had learned already, a certain look and tone and way of asking got him what he wanted...when mom and dad didn't see right through it that was. Thus he toed the floor with his boot before a nod. "I like it a lot. Would make great pirate treasure." Poking at some of the things. "Me and Zykariel don't have nothing great like this to use for our treaure, just air or cookies. And those get breathed in and eaten up and go away." A little tilt of his head and a blink, a little smile. Come on, how can you say no to this face?
"I know you don't, I don't either." Personally he couldn't wait till the child could control his reveries. Then there would be no more nights like that but what could you do until he learned in oh another dozen years or so. And it seemed his son was back in better spirits, which was a good thing. But then a nod to Zykariel.
"Yes I taught Zahara runes. She had to learn from scratch like a little elf. Just like you're going to." Though his son's assumption did pull a laugh from him...of course that made sense in the child's head. "It was a little hard, they got cranky with me and would often no do what I said and when they disobeyed, the magic and runes hurt them. See, even grown ups had to learn to control it and be patient." Though his attention turned up slightly at the sigh of Piper with a questioning raise of an eyebrow.
"Sevilin, sorry to interrupt but I have a question. Malikhai wants Zykariel to stay the night, and they haven't had each other over for a while, so I thought it would be an okay idea to just let them go ahead with it. They'll have fun and entertain each other, us adults get a bit of time to ourselves. More so you than me and Malik. What do you say?"

Well you learned something new every day, now didn't you? Zara had to learn from scratch just like he was going to. And his daddy had taught her. His head tilted when he mentioned Zara and Arthur disobeying and getting hurt. Even adults got into trouble sometimes, that made him feel a lot better.
Piper's entrance into the room brought a smile and a wave from the little drow, still ensconced on his father's lap. But her announcement brought him notice as he literally bounced on his father's knee and got really excited. "I get to stay with Malikhai tonight?! That means we can play pirates until bed time!" then remembering the 'asking' rule that his father had he turned and gave him the pleading eyes. "Can I Daddy? Please? We can start learning stuff tomorrow morning dark and early just like Zara always says!"
Needless to say Zahara had no sense of self control when she was deeply preoccupied with something. Wine would have been her answer but she was determined to let nothing ruin this night and she knew how Sevilin felt about wine, especially when it dealt with the stuff going down her throat in extreme amounts. But every time she thought of the word, she wanted a drink. Finally she shoved the bottle into the cabinet and threw herself into her work, ingnoring the wine completely. Sevilin could drink it when he finally ventured back this way. Sevilin. The name calmed her somewhat and she shook her head. Dinner! Dinner wasn't even close to ready as she'd been stressing about this nickname, though that's really all it was right? Like Sweetheart or Zara. Just a nonsensical nickname, not a glimpse into his feelings for her. She shivered lightly, there was no way in hell he could love her. It just wouldn't be right. She finished up the rest of the preparation in a blind whizz of action and reaction. She made her chocolate cake, baked potatoes, and finished up the steaks wthout even thinking about. In no time the table was set, with nice china for once and silverware, actual forks, knives and spoons and matching napkins and placemats. Two wine glasses were set out as well though she didn't trust herself to pour. She'd start drinking and wouldn't be able to stop. But that brought her back to matching sets of placemats and napkins. Wasn't table setting nice? She'd even cleaned up the preparation dishes and messes she'd made, all without really thinking about it. She was going out of her mind...was this what love did to you?

Broog looked at the little elf...tilted his head lightly...then tilted it the other way...then scratched his head..and it was like a lightbulb got turned on. and big broog lumbered over and dragged out another chest. this was stuff that a human would have found wonderful, but had minor, tiny, only noticable to a jeweler flaws. and some only noticable to broog...and opened that one and pushed it over.
"Youz can hab dis one!"
Malik chuckled lightly.
"you realize, son...that Broog isn't going to carry that upstairs for you. you wanted it, you drag it upstairs with you."
Hey, it wasn't nearly as large as the other one...but probably plenty heavy for a toddler to have to work to get it up there.
