How about giving extremely general statistics to characters, and allow everyone to compare them together instead of a rigid, complicated ranking system?

Few problems.
1. What's the line mean? Is that above average or what? 2. Need comparison to average person. 3. What do the stats account for? 4. Are those all the stats?

@Fenrir: If you want the long explanation:
p. strength: average muscle strength of the body. If the character is specialized in a certain body part (ex: a boxer doesn't use kicks, only punches), you can just account that one.
m. strength: the general power of spells and supernatural ability. Destructive power, range, casting speed, etc.
p. stamina: normal physical stamina. How much physical effort can one take before getting exhausted. This includes "hp", the amount of damage the character can endure before being incapacitated.
m. stamina: the amount of magical energies the character has. How many spells he can cast and how much energy he can spare before running out of juice. "mp".
agility: speed, quickness of movement, hand dexterity, reflexes and such.
resistance: general defense. How much damage the character will take from such and such spell. Thus a character with low stamina could still fight for long if his resistance was high. Includes mental and physical resistance to damage.
Like I said, nothing specialized, just a very general overlooked of a character's ups and downs. With a diagram like that one, it's easy to determine the general strenght of a character according to the shape of the blue area. The closer to the outside the point is, the higher the stat is.
@Sierra: my own artwork. =o

themightyjello Kichiro Oda Considering there is a sum total of one RPer in Lu Bu that calls themselves completely human who can do an insane attack like that, you don't really need to name drop. xd SIEG CAN BRING HIMSELF BACK FROM THE DEAD. O:< Why not be like Cloud and just have Earth bring you back from the dead?

h X c -considers- laz is average on all fronts. Can't he like, flash-freeze the equivalent of a small neighborhood, though? That'd boost his "magical strength" stat up. =o
