One clean hit with the nail bat to the head will more or less kill someone, temple, back of the skull, eyes, whatever. Of course, if you put holes in their liver, they could also bleed to death. Or if you puncture their thoratic cavity and collapse a lung or two, they could suffocate after a while. But this all depends on how long the nails are and if theres a hospital or ambulance around and all that.
But generally, just beating someone senseless would be the pipe. Sure you could break some bones, or give people concussions and following ones that could kill, but generally, it would take longer to kill someone and just prolongue the bringing of pain.
