jean auguste dominique ingres painted the grand odalisque in 1814. this romantic peice showed exotic orientalisim. Her feathered fan, elaberated headdress and braslette all referencethe east, or south, all of which were seen as so far away, culture wise from french society. This is a very finished peice of work, there are no visual brushstrokes, in that it looks more like a photograph then a painting (even though it is obviously a painting).

joseph m.w. turner, an english romanstisist, paitned the slave ship in 1840, to capture an event that happened. The captin, wishing to collect on insturance, threw the sick overboard, before they had died. The strong contrasts of red and blue, no distint line to seperate the sky and sea, show an emotional raging storm. The effect is that the viewr must stop and look to see what is going on.

john constable, an english romansisist painted the haywain in 1821. This oin painting is of a trainquil lanscape, made with muted greens and golds. The sky is settling after a storm, adding to the peacefulness. This highly naturalistic work, unidealized, unbalance, more as real nature would exist, is all about man vs nature. The wagon is dwarfed by nature, nature wins.

Joseph m.w. turner, another english romantisist also showed man vs man, and the larger, man vs nature in his painting, the slave ship. More about the behavior, and cruelty.

honore damier, a french print maker by trade, made his Third Class Carriage in 1862. This realist painting depicts real life, of real people, the whole goal of realisim. THe work is unfinished, but it shows where the poor people would ride, all crammed together, and their blank and vauge expressions, how they would look in real life. To enhanse the realisim, the setting was unrehearsed.

edouard manet painted lunechon on the grass in 1863. This early inpressionalisim, branching out from realisim, is of four figures in a french park. Depicted are a prosititue, manets brother and a sculpture. the men are dressed in their dandy attier, while the women are naked. What branches out into impressionalisim here, is that the people are too large to fit in their enviornement. The landscape and still life are rendered perfectly, while the people appear flat, like stickers pasted on the image. The light is also off, in some places you see light on the ground, but it does not effect the people. There are classical elemenets of this painting, a landscape, a still life, nude figures, and they refence all to giorgiones pastural symphony of rennisance times, where he dipicted two well dressed men and two naked women, but what sets these two apart, aside from natural progression, Manet has painted this outside, in the real setting.

gustave courbert, a french realist paitner, painted burial at ornans, in 1849. here he has presented, and monumentalized these ordinary people at a funeral. He has grouped the people, some are morning, and some are in quiet conversation. The setting and the people are rather ordinary and common, going after the goals of realisim.
