"It sounds like a wonderful thing to have grown up hearing. Is it common for your people to be so well versed in the history of their ancestors?" He loosed one hand so that he could wrap her tail around it.
I think I'm glad you'll be keeping this appendage. It's grown on me.

She purred even louder. Most of the Terrans seem to like our tails too, she sent impishly at him.
"Traditionally, actually, Sholans had little care for history beyond the clan, and even then, only to track linage to prevent inbreeding. However the Terrans shook us up, brought a new skill to Shola, we now have an archeology guild." her mouth tripped a bit over the word archeology. "But even if not for that, my clan would track our history back more carefully, because we are as of a new race, we NEED to learn from the past, or we would perish. So I perhaps know more personal details of my grandparents' lives than a cub might normally. But not only am I En'Shalla, but I am to be clan leader after my mother, with my mate. With you. We need to know the history, and the pitfalls, more than any other. We need to understand what has happened, to understand what will. Most Sholans still find this an odd concept, anticipating the future, by learning the past, but I think it is one of the better things we got from the Terrans."

He liked the purring. It meant he must be doing something right.
I suppose they would. But I could look like you if you would rather. All you have to do is show me what a male of your kind will look like.

I want you to look however you wish to look, she sent simply. I am not so shallow that I choose my mate based only on outer form, after all. The mental tone was light, so show him she was teasing and amused, not affronted or offended. Though it could be interesting to try sometime.... she added with a mental purr.
"I may have, I honestly am a bit distracted myself," she said licking the tip of his chin with her rough tongue. "I probably didn't, though, not fully. It is a complicated concept, because it has so many meanings, for my people. The simplest thing would be to say that the translation is "in the hands of the Gods". It refers to differences between my clan and the others, the ritual it took to invoke that status for my family, the fact that my grandparents survived the ritual, the name of my clan, and it is coming to be known as the name for the hybrids between the Sholans and Humans, as all of them fall under the purview of our clan."

"I see." Hadrian filed the information away for later, when he wasn't being distracted. He gently butted his head against hers, blowing out softly in the manner of cats.
Sometime it would be interesting. I could never stay that way permanently, though. Just as when you become able to shift shape, the form you have now will always be your natural one, this is my natural one. Though I think it would be interesting to see how your people feel about my being able to shift into one such as them.

"Mmmmmm" she said happily, lifting her chin for him. Tell you a secret, since you'll learn it from me anyway... my grandparents...well...two of them... can change their outer forms to other humanoid forms. Grandmother hates doing it...grandfather... had little choice... but when grandmother became Sholan for a night while they were on a mission.... Apparently they slipped away from the others for a while. What when on beyond that is speculation, but then there is little to wonder about, really. She purred happily.

Interesting. Can you change then? Not that I want you to. I happen to like the way you are now. I've spent almost as much time as a panther as a man. A little bit of the cat has rubbed off on me over the years. In fact, in the past 50 years, this is about on par with how long I usually stay in this shape.

She purred louder, her hands gripping his shoulders, claws coming in and out ever so slightly, like a kneading cat. Not now, but with the gestalt one day, who knows.

She didn't want to stop, she didn't want to be put off. She didn't want to deal with the la'quo. She... realized she was acting childish, not at all like the adult she wanted to be. She wanted to be a warrior, she needed to still her mind, she needed to BE a warrior. She forced her ears still, they had been flattening in distress at being denied. she slowly raised them, reciting the litanies to still her mind. She chose the litany for preparation, to still her mind. It worked, as the litanies so often did for her.

"Be at ease. You will feel me as a warmth. I will not be in my body. I will have to trust you to keep it safe for me while I do this. I will also try to lessen the pain as much as possible.
He shed his body and became bright, healing light and entered hers. It took him some time to find out what her normal chemistry was, but once that was done, he started in on the La'quo. It was fairly easy to break down and eradicate and he wondered who had poisoned her to begin with. He returned to his body some 20 minutes later, only mildly drained. Certainly nothing like if he had been healing severe injuries.
"That was not so bad, was it?"

She took the protection of his body seriously, her blaster in her hand as her body arched protectively over his. She had kept her attention pointedly outwards against any threat.
When he spoke, she leaned back, and holstered her gun. She turned her attention inward now and nodded. He would have noticed that the La'Quo had been deeply integrated into her and it seemed almost... almost like there were two does in it, one far older and more integrated into her body and mind than the other, the second, the more recent, had been more violent, had been stronger, but not as entrenched.
When she felt the difference in herself, she gave a small involuntary gasp. She had never felt quite as... light... as free... as she did now. "What in Ghyakulla's name did you do?" she whispered.

"I got rid of the poison. I was able to look at the chemical make up and use the enzymes in your body to undo it. All of my people are capable of that to some degree. I am not as talented as others, but I'm not entirely helpless either."
