I've missed you too. *Bard sighs* Is everything all right with you and Will?
PostPosted: Wed Oct 26, 2005 5:38 pm

*she pauses a moment, unsure how to answer* We . . we're alright. I was just settling him in te bed when I came here . . . *a sad expression flickers across her features* 'Tis been . .. something of a long day for us both.

*Bard's embrace tightens* Has something happened?
PostPosted: Wed Oct 26, 2005 5:51 pm

Nay . . . that is, not . . . recently. *she stumbles over her words a bit, a little apprehensive about broaching this topic with him for the first time.* 'Tis just that . .. Will's father died six years ago today.

*Bard stiffens slightly, unsure of how to respond*

That must be... very difficult... for both of you.

*Maggie feels him tense and goes still, herself. Part of her feels as though she ought to pull away and part of her just wants to hold on to him more tightly. She does neither. Her voice comes out very quietly* Not so much as it once was, but . . . aye . . .

*Bard nods thoughtfully. For a long moment he's very quiet*

You've never talked about him very much....
PostPosted: Wed Oct 26, 2005 6:42 pm

. . . I dinna speak of him very often, save te Will, I . .. *her shoulders droop slightly as she admits* . .. I didna know him very well.

*Bard absorbs this silently. Of course, for Maggie, an arranged marriage would have been perfectly normal, but it never occurred to him that she and her husband were barely more than strangers*

Would— would you mind telling me about it...?

*He then adds quickly* ... that is, if it isn't too hard for you...

*Maggie shakes her head* Nay, I wouldna mind . . . I suppose I'm . . just not used te talking about him and . . . what happened. *she pauses, trying to explain some of her awkwardness about it* Ainsford's a small village . .. everybody knows, so . . . no one there e'er asks, or mentions it much at all, except for Will.

Did Will... know his dad at all?
PostPosted: Wed Oct 26, 2005 7:36 pm

*she shakes her head again, and her eyes are very sad now* He was only a few months old when he . . . when Peter died. He canna remember him at all. He wishes very much that he could ...

*Bard nods, wondering inwardly what sort of father Peter Dowling would have been*

How did he...?
PostPosted: Wed Oct 26, 2005 7:58 pm

There was . . . an accident, out in the fields. 'Twas . . 'twas a cold autumn, and everyone was rushing te finish the harvest before the frost set in. *she closes her eyes - it's a painful memory*

They ne'er told me exactly what happened. Just that . . something went wrong with the plow horse . . . that Peter struck his head, and . . *she swallows reflexively and opens her eyes again, but they're still seeing the past more than the present* 'Twas . . . very quick, they said.
