"No...no I understand." Terryn gave him a kiss, though she felt a little uncomfortable doing so. "You were busy and tired. There is nothing wrong, right?"

Marcus blinked. Well, it was partially because he had been tired. "Well, I am sorry for being short with you. But I did mean what I said," he told her earnestly, furrowing his eyebrows.

"What?" Terryn canted her head to the side. "That there are many pretty Russian women or that I was unable to think straight? I am sure both are true."

"The first, of course," answered Marcus, rolling his eyes. "But I wanted to be certain that you don't expect me to love you. Because it doesn't exist, and I'm never going to fall in love."

Terryn nodded. "I understand. You already know my position on love agrees with your own. You were correct that I was not in my right mind." She pulled away from him and turned around to look at nothing in particular. "I must have read some treatise on love or something when I fell asleep in the library."

Marcus smiled slightly. "Well, I shall tell our irritating host to get some books that actually stimulate thought," he told her, rubbing the back of his neck.

"Worry not, there are quite a few. I must have skimmed to a bad chapter." Terryn still was looking randomly off in the distance, not being able to force herself to turn around. She felt cold suddenly, and shivered a bit.

Marcus didn't know what to do. He felt a little uncomfortable now, and the fact that he was uncomfortable was even more disconcerting than the feeling itself. "Well, there's no sense in my going back to the manor, I suppose."

"It is entirely up to you." At this, Terryn finally turned around. "You can either go back to work or stay here and stare at me in the same awkward manner that you are now."

Marcus grinned. "It wouldn't be half as awkward if you'd make eye contact with me," he informed her.

Terryn tried, glancing up at him for a moment and making eye contact. She attempted to say something at that point, but looking at him rendered her temporarily speechless.

Marcus laughed, but it ended up sounding like a weak chuckle. "Come now, as though that makes things any less awkward."

Terryn blinked, swallowing hard since she had forgotten to do so. She nodded and leaned in to give him a kiss, a gentler, somewhat different one than she usually did.

Marcus returned the kiss just as gently as she had, trying to rid himself of all this tension and awkwardness. It didn't work, exactly, but it was vaguely comforting.

Terryn finally pulled back from him, a few words that she really didn't want to say catching in her throat. She looked down at the ground, still holding on to him.
