"Goodnight, sweetheart." Terryn curled up next to him, trying her best to ease the twinging sensation in her stomach that she kept getting in small pulses.

The next morning, it was increasingly difficult for Marcus to think. Terryn and their disturbing conversation kept buzzing around in his head all morning. He left without waking Terryn, or eating, and he sat down on the charred remains of a chair for a while to clear his mind.

Terryn tossed and turned in her sleep for a little while until she finally awoke, alone. She stared up at the ceiling, hoping to God that she had dreamed last night's entire conversation but knowing in all truth that she didn't.

The conversation had affected Marcus more than he would have liked to admit. He found himself ordering a wooden fireplace, at which point a nearby drunk pointed out that it would be "most unusual." He practically threw the blueprints at his manager, and took his coach home.

After a few hours, Terryn realized confing herself to her bed was not conducive to occupying her mind with other thoughts. She found a rapier in the armory similar to her own and took outside in the back to practice her parrying.

When Marcus finally found Terryn, his mouth fell open very slightly, as though he were going to say something. He fumbled around for words to explain himself, and only came up with, "Oh, good. You're still here."

Terryn turned around quickly, slightly startled. "What? Of course I am. Why would I not be?" She quickly looked away again, though, unable to maintain eye contact with him.

Marcus shrugged uncomfortably, looking at the ground. "I'm not sure. I just thought that you might be---tiring of this place, and I was afraid that you had left."

Terryn raised an eyebrow, sheathing her rapier and crossing her arms over her chest. "That is lovely. Now tell me the real reason."

Marcus looked up and gave her a sheepish grin. "I don't know why, to tell you the truth. I just had a strange feeling that I might have...er, done something."

Marcus nodded. "I feared that my behavior yesterday...." Here, he avoided all mention of the conversation, "...might have led you to think that I didn't care for you much. And, really, that's not true. Not in the least."
