Oriole Lyric I want to go on a hike! I never went hiking before, what do you have to do to go hiking? How good in shape do you have to be to go hiking? It's more about being able to properly assess your physical shape than being in good shape. Mostly because you need to be able to get back to your car or home lol You just have to be able to reasonably decide when you need to turn around and go back and be able to get back. You should have comfortable shoes, and probably bug spray. If you're under trees, sunscreen isn't very necessary. You should also have water, and if you think you can last long enough to need them, snacks. If you don't know of hiking trails, check with your local Parks and Rec department, they probably have a list either online or if it's a smaller town then at their office.

Oriole Lyric I want to go on a hike! I never went hiking before, what do you have to do to go hiking? How good in shape do you have to be to go hiking? I think rilsin nailed in when saying you need to be able to assess your strength. It's very easy to enjoy yourself so much that you forget that you need to get back. Hiking is the same as walking, just different terrain. Any hikes I go on (new terrain or more than an hour and half) I take a pack with water and snacks. Appropriate shoes that are comfortable are a must. A hat if you're going to be exposed to the sun a lot and sunscreen. I tend to overpack and take a knife, a little first aid pack and my phone and camera. Go with a trusted friend that knows the territory. If neither of you know, make sure the trail is well marked and do not wander from the trail. Even if it looks okay and safe. My Oma and I wandered from the marked trail in the Drumheller Bad Lands and got lost. Not fun. Always let a responsible person know where you are going and when you are coming back. (And again, don't wander from the trail or the area you've told your friend.)

My tomatoes are ripening in the part of the backyard I have. The ones at the community garden are not so good, because I sometimes miss a watering.
Our new little kitten got her leg stuck on a shelf we have been trying to train her not to play on, and now she is at the vet getting checked up (even though she was just at a vet's two weeks ago...and needs to go back for second vac's in another week and a half) but she is probably fine. By the time my husband got home to take her, she was trying to play with the other cats and I was having to keep them separated.

I've been out of school officially for 1 year and I'm feeling my brain deteriorating!
Is anyone studying to be an agronomist here?

My mimosa sprouted today. Also bought a car from the future - a 2013 Kia Rio5 SX UVO. White, sun roof, leather interior, 17" wheels, six speed manual. Excellent gas mileage. Only one in Western Canada, picking it up next weekend. twisted

I tried making soap for the first time yesterday! It's something I've been wanting to get into, so for an easy beginner project I made some using melt-and-pour. I'm planning to pick up a book on it soon and dive in.

@Pirhan: That's one sexy car
@ Banvivire: Oooh~! Tell us how that turns out, and if you some how learn what kinds of wicks to use for certain candles let me know!
I've been saving a stone of empty candle shells that I want to reuse, but don't know what kind of wick is appropriate.
top layer of sphagnum moss in my venus fly trap pot had crusted over with algae. D: I had to dismantle the pot to check to see if my decreasing health plant was dying in the medium. It wasn't! It was a fat white rhizome. I guess It's either one readying itself for hibernation or .... it hates the pot I have it in.

I am having the hardest time figuring out when to pick green beans! So, apparently, I am now growing beans to dry smile
It's fun, they are very pretty when I break open the pods.
I tried another green bean today from a different plant, and it was so bad that even after spitting it out, I felt like throwing up for 5 hours (and that's including eating a meal and two snacks, so the taste was long gone!) so I've officially given up.
We bought the biggest cauliflower I have ever witnessed yesterday, so today is Vegetables For Dinner day.
The cat upstairs had four kittens today, and they are absolutely beautiful, the mom cat is absurdly proud of herself for making them. It's adorable.

String bean picking is hard period. My grandparents always tell me they're good before their first bulge, that's when the beans insides start to swell.

gardening gloves turned into a spider home!!!!!!! D: WHY DO YOU ALL LIKE MY GLOVES!?!?
I'm not allowed to put the gloves into the washing machine. Maybe I'll just drown them in a bucket.
Trumpet vines will not leave garden plots. You leave just a tiny little segment in the dirt and it will root like a monster.

I saw this new supplement brand at the store. The ingredients were very simple. Looked at their products online and they have a few products that contain shark cartilage. I will not support a company that has anything to do with the fishing and killing of sharks. I wrote to them and the guy who wrote back said no shark was endangered and the company (New Roots) is doing good because they're taking a waste product. Wow. Just really. First, there are many sharks that are on the endangered species list. Second, purchasing the by product continues to give the fishing company incentive to continue killing sharks. Guy got a piece of my mind, backed up by scientific facts, since New Roots likes to buy into the myth that consuming shark will benefit your health.
Due to that BS reply, I also wrote to the store and asked them to rethink carrying New Roots. (Sisu is another company that has shark products for anyone playing the boycott game.)
