@Michi: Even a non-fan such as myself caught the fact that Rue was being described as dark-skinned in the book. And here I thought the Hungers Games fandom was sane. Sigh...
EDIT: @Kiah: Thanks. The insane part is that these characters were supposed to be black, or at least dark-skinned...))

Wordlessly, she watched him detach himself and leave the room, giving an explanation that sounded more like an empty excuse than anything. It was obvious from his distant demeanor that, despite her attempts to voice her thoughts as honestly and gently as she could, he was not pleased with her words.
With a frustrated sigh, Michiyo pulled her legs onto the couch, folding her arms around her knees and burying her face into them. It really didn't matter what the situation was, she always seemed to manage to put her foot in her mouth - just like this morning when she found him in her bed. Best intentions aside, somehow she just wasn't good with words, and more often than not other - less sane - parts of her mind got behind the wheel, making things even worse.
What was worse was that he did help, he could make her forget about home for a short while - him and the rest of the wonderful people she had met here. Hell, he could make her forget about pretty much everything when... Hastily, she shook her head. This was not the time to go down that particular road again, there was enough going on already without throwing that dilemma into the mix.
Glancing over the top of her arms towards the door, she wondered if he would be back, as he had said, or if this had been the final straw, that he was now completely fed up with her. Given their track record, she couldn't exactly blame him. Yet until now he always came back. Always forgave her for whatever mad thing she had done, or whatever she had said. He really was a very good friend.

Erin took some time to calm down, and when he finally did, he didn't look at the broken picture on the floor. He made no move to clean up the mess or anything of the sort. He turned his back on it, on the mess, and slipped from the room. As he made his way back to the Common Room, he tried not to think about how frustrated Michiyo made him. He tried not to think about how the one person he finally tried to get close to seemed to always be pushing him away. He tried not to think about the rejection and the mixed up feelings, the ups and downs. He tried not to think about her drunken behavior of the night before.
For not the first or last time, he decided that he didn't need her, that anything he felt about her was just some crush or fleeting feeling. He decided he had been right all along, and that he didn't need to become attached to anyone. At the same time, he reminded himself that just because he didn't need her, it didn't mean that she didn't need him. He still made the promise, and intended to keep it as long as she needed him around. Therefore, when he walked into the room, he put a bright smile on.
"The kitchen smelled good when I passed it. Do you want to go see if everything is ready?" he asked lightly.

She wondered what he had done while he was away, as it seemed to have had a marvelous effect on his attitude. His smile was bright and inviting, and she couldn't help but match it as she quickly rose from the couch to join him by the door. She was relieved he seemed to be taking her recent outburst in his stride, "Alright. I am getting pretty hungry."
Sneaking glances at him as they walked back to the kitchens, she wondered once again why - given everything she had said and done - he kept coming back, but at the same time knew that she wouldn't be able to ask him. Somehow she felt a part of her already knew the answer, even if it was a part that she kept as far at the back of her mind as she could.
Suddenly, an image appeared in front of her mind's eye. Erin, looking at her, earnest and open, the sensation of a warm hand on her cheek. His voice floated along with the image, soft and gentle. A lot lot, Michiyo...
It lasted only a second, gone before she even had a chance to properly process what was happening, but it was enough for her to falter slightly in her steps. She blinked rapidly, frowning, as her hand subconsciously rose to her cheek where the hint of warmth still remained. She searched her mind, wondering where on earth that had come from, but unable to find it. She wasn't even sure it was a memory, and not some odd dream she was remembering. And a lot lot? A lot of what? What did that even mean?
One more glance his way, a longer one this time. If it was a memory, he would know... and he would be able to elaborate. But she wasn't even sure what to ask him. It wasn't exactly much to go on. She returned her gaze to the floor, lost in thought as her feet automatically traced the route to the kitchens, trying to determine the scene's authenticity by trying to place it in context, which was proving problematic as most of her recent memories were a blur. "A lot lot...," she muttered softly under her breath, not even aware she was speaking out loud.

Erin walked along with her, looking forward. He didn't notice her faltering, or her staring at him. He didn't notice her brush her cheek, or the confused look on her face that said she remembered something. It wasn't until she quietly uttered those words, that he faltered himself.
"What..was that?" he swallowed and looked at Michiyo, stopping outside the door to the kitchen.
