I'm pretty sure it's eight.
Though according to the newest PA post the open world multiplayer is depressingly barren. I wonder if they'll patch it to include more of the game's content.

My brother runs around with seven other guys and punches bears to death.

Barren in terms of no quests to do, not barren in terms of lack of bears to punch.

What quests?
I don't remember any in-game missions that didn't revolve around shooting people or punching bears.
