The Duchess heaved a sigh, but presently looked up. A familiar, shrewd sort of gleam was in her eyes. "You don't suppose that our suspicions regarding their elopement was accurate?"

Blinking dumbly for a moment, the earl cleared his throat before he could speak. "I...I do not know. It is possible but, but so unexpected when you really think about it."

The Duchess almost threw the letter back at her dear friend, now almost convinced that the two of them were running around Europe...married. "Does it really sound as though the two of them have been doing much thinking?"

The Earl shrugged. "I suppose not." He got up from his chair and paced around, shiaking his head every now and then. "Just so unlike her..."

The Duchess was plotting. It had become almost a pasttime as of late. "Our next course of action. We should pressure them to confess what they have done."

"Come now, did that work for us the last time?" The earl shook his head and sat back down. "No, I think it is time we made let them come to us. After all, they are adults."

The Duchess studied the earl and nodded slowly. "I only wish that they would begin to act like it," she answered crossly, sitting down. "And suppose they never do come back? Suppose that they just disappear somewhere else?"

At this, the earl had to laugh. "Terryn would return. She left her mother's ring." If there was one thing he definitely knew, it was that Terryn would never think of leaving behind her mother's silver ring, which the earl had given her after Terryn was born, as one of those "I'm so proud of you and I love you" symbols.

The Duchess wasn't sure what this meant, exactly, but the earl looked so absolutely certain that she said no more. "Well. I do hope that they come to their senses soon."

"As do I. I do not know if I can take much more of Serina's attempts to remodel Terryn's room in her absence." The earl shook his head. "She is gone again, to some local hot springs because she is ill again."

The Duchess nodded sympathetically. "My condolences," she answered, patting the earl on the arm before rising. "Well. It is getting late. I should be going home now. Be sure to write me if they send word."
Marcus looked up at the clock. It was, indeed, getting late. And he had no doubt that he would be very busy tomorrow. "Are you getting tired?" he asked Terryn, looking up from the manor's blueprints.

"I shall." The earl gave her a friendly kiss on the cheek and walked her to her carriage.
"A little." Terryn was seated next to him, sitting on her feet as she looked at the blueprints. "We have been working for quite a while."

Marcus nodded. "It looks good though. The renovations are good," he repeated, running his fingers over the blueprints. "Maintains the integrity of the old building, if that's what architects say these days."

"And at least there is less wooden structure on it. It will not burn as much." Terryn yawned and leaned over on him, shutting her eyes momentarily.

"As much?" answered Marcus, closing his eyes as well. "You sound as though you're plotting to set fire to it as soon as it's finished."
