Mr Crawley
Sounds like you guys need to learn how to let go of attachment to money related issues and find a way to make it work.

I had an epiphany while being homeless for a month last year. I managed to figure out exactly what I wanted to do with my time every day.

Since then, everything I do now is an effort to clear my schedule so that I have space to do those things. All that's left is to clear my schedule of work.

And that goal is coming along steadily.

Do you have a career-related passion, Crawley? Just curious.

Always. Never. Can't. Definitely.

Black and white terms. s**t like that is why our political system is so horrible.

Look in a shade of gray. Nothing is always an awful idea and nothing is always a great policy.

Thinking like that restricts innovation, cooperation from neighboring political institutions, etc. It is one of the reasons we are decades behind Europe on things like health care.

But I didn't say any of those words. ._. All I said was that I -think- socialized anything is a step in the wrong direction, but I'm not exactly venomous about it.

I thought I made that clear when I said I felt we should probably develop a system free from the two sides, so that there is a much more visible "gray".

It's just my take on all of it, is all. Take it for what you will, but just don't take it the wrong way.

Kroww, is that some kind of Cave Crustacean in your signature? it shows the classic signs of something living in lightless areas.
I'm willing to bet he got it off of the yahoo article that was on the home page a couple days back. I know there's some pretty old image macros featuring 'em, but can't find any for the life of me. Cute little buggers, huh? heart

Pardon the random-a** science interjection within all the politico, y'all.

Hello Germany. XD

Haha, but seriously, I'm going to come out of school 25-ish years old about 300k in debt, have a residency + internship, and still not make more than 80k a year until I'm in my 40s.

But I love psychology. I did an internship in a ward last summer for a month and did some basic therapy with people who attempted suicide. We released about 70 percent of them that summer.

Nothing's really ever warmed my heart like that. I honestly lack the words to describe how I felt. And I actually keep in touch with one of them.

Doing something like that for the rest of my life is worth the trials it presents. If anything, I'll grow stronger from it.

I have no need for riches, haha. All the money in the world wouldn't let me feel the passion of an amazing career and a fulfilling life.

All I want out of life...

blah blah blah

If at any time I have to be mindful of losing a paycheck because I am supposed to report somewhere to someone... I'm not doing something right.

Parties are just a product of the childhood creation of America's government. Back then, they didn't know what the heck they wanted to do, and went through a large sum of renovations of the constitution until they finally came to an agreement. Republicans and Democrats are still around only because of our deeply rooted America is still in the past. The rules they made were for how things were at that time.

This is the 21st century. It's 2010. We're not at war with Britain anymore nor France. The internet has interlinked nearly everyone on this planet together, so information networks make many laws ineffective. I'm still laughing at the fact that Australia is trying to control the internet, just as much as China is trying to control it themselves.

But we're all smarter in this day and age. No matter how things go, I'm not stuck to being "American" or whatever title that is thrown around.

Time management isn't hard. Neither is money management.

I just want to work with history, research, and/or writing.

I can get paid 70k, 100k, or whatever. I don't really care.

It won't be hard for me to live how I want, because I don't require a bunch of frivolous s**t, and I'm pretty ******** austere with clothing, food, and s**t.

My entire wardrobe costs less than some people's selection of jeans. I buy T-shirts in packs of 3 and a handful of more expensive ones, and all my jeans are plain Levis. I own one or two pair of shoes, at most. I wear very little jewelry. The man makes the clothing, not the other way around.

Food? I eat the same s**t almost, six days a week. Same breakfast, same lunch, same dinner, same snacks. Barely any overpriced bullshit or junkfood. And my supplements like vitamins, protein powder, etc., are all more effective by weight than ANY junk food will ever be.

Car? It runs. I keep it in good running order. I have no problem driving something a couple of years old. I used to drive a 1992 Cadillac until it basically broke down and the engine went to s**t. Now I drive a '05 Sonata. Runs perfect, good gas mileage. I'll probably still be driving it in '15, if it keeps on running.

My most expensive hobbies are gaming and weightlifting. And even then, these totaled together are usually less than 1000 dollars, because I sure don't buy ten fifty dollar games a year.

I picked up my austerity from my dad, and thankfully none of my mom's shitty money habits like getting excessive amounts of debt. I have absolutely zero debt. I only use a credit card because I can immediately pay it off and build my credit. Same with when I took over my dad's loan for the car. It's not really debt, because it won't escape from me. I'll pay it off in a large lump sum as soon as I'm out of college.

@Rising: What treatment is the most common? I mean, as far as I know, you're not allowed to prescribe drugs as a psychologist. And do you still follow, let's say, Freud's theories at all today?

And...being American isn't smart? ._.

I would think that's as much of the problem as people getting over conscious over being "un-American".

I've been working in a job I find unfulfilling for almost two years now. I could easily see myself getting stuck there; but I don't want that to happen.

I do need to plan for the future and my hobbies aren't the cheapest around. Though at least with one of them I've purchased most of the expensive things already that are within my price range.

But books, I love buying them far too much.

I should mention that I am merely an undergrad and thus my psychological knowledge is still a step above DERP DERP but nowhere near proficient.

There are psychiatrists within the ward that work with the psychologists if medicinal therapy is necessary. Though I'm personally in favor of killing psychiatry in favor of lengthened schooling.

Psychology is still very preparadigmatic, which means "normal" psychology doesn't exist. There are still people out there who follow Freud's traditional teachings. I wouldn't classify them in anywhere near the norm. I personally think Freud was horribly inaccurate himself but what spawned due to his teachings was extremely important. Basically I think he had a ridiculous amount of heuristic value and identify more with later theories.

As far as non-medicinal therapy goes, cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is the most common. It really depends on the source of their depression. Sometimes it's terrible thinking. Abuse. Biological factors. Socioeconomic status. Even a combination of everything.

Putting it horribly simply, the goal is to try to get past their affect, figure out what factors are responsible for their depression, and amend them. I had a friend who went into a crippling depression once due to his parents getting divorced and him moving coupled with his social anxiety. There was essentially nothing wrong with him biologically.

There are also people out there who do have a biological problem and need medicine to function.

It's very case-by-case. I believe the best psychologists don't try to generalize any one kind of therapy as superior.

Protip: Getting people to rally behind a laundry list of values and praising them for it is what got us into this funk.

No, being educated and willing to change your entire value system in response to the changing times if it will positively benefit your country is smart.
