Marcus ignored this last jibe. "I speak to them. We dance. I escort the girl places, typically a few plays, and banquets, and occasionally to any sort of secluded spot. Unless you wanted to hear about the...physical aspect of courting."

"No, no, that's fine." Terryn sighed. "I don't do much of any of that, unless I'm forced into it." She sat up and looked at him analytically. "Perhaps this will not work." She stood and paced in front of the bench, trying to force her mind to awaken and finally think of some feasible plot. "Perhaps we can stage another rendezvous in a few days. We can make it seem like a chance encounter..."

Marcus thought for a moment. "Yes. That should work well. But what happens then? The elders leave us and we are forced to plot our next chance meeting?" He shrugged. Perhaps winning Terryn--he had already begun to think of her as a prize--would not be as much fun as he'd thought.

"I suppose we can take it from there." Terryn pondered for a moment before holding out her hand to him, as if to shake it like they were making a business deal. "I just wish to warn you. I am not going to be your little trophy girl or something. I despise your kind and I am doing this only for my benefit. Whatever you reap from this is entirely up to you, but just know I do not fall in love, lust, or infatuation of any kind." She gave him a very serious look, as if to crush any last hope he might have had of actually winning her over or making her heart flutter.

Marcus let an uncharacteristically wicked smile rest on his features for just a moment. He would be the first to, as the public saw it, have an affair with Terryn, the cold, ruthless, beauty. Given his reputation, the public would assume things. And his reputation would rise. And that was quite enough of a trophy for him. He accepted her hand. "As long as you can pretend that you have, I will be quite content."

Terryn frowned. She was not the best of actresses. "I will pretend to tolerate you, which is really all that can be asked of me. I outright refuse to act overly physical or romantic in any way." She retracted her hand after he shook it and crossed her arms over her chest. "Besides which, the shock of me in love may actually kill my father. His heart isn't what it used to be."

Marcus only half-listened to her. "Yes, yes. So where are we meeting next?" he inquired, looking back at the elders.

Terryn followed his example of being extremely short with him. "Court, two days hence." She gave no explanation, assuming that he would know the reason. It was rather well known that a visiting priesthood from Spain was travelling into the area and there was to be a reception for them at the royal court.

"I'll see you then," said Marcus. He couldn't very well go flirting with other girls at the banquet now. He thought he might go practice archery at home. He waited (impatiently) for Terryn to extend her hand so that he might kiss it and leave quickly.

Terryn nodded, looking as though she might speak when her father barged in, looking very merry indeed with a glass of sherry in his hand.
"Ahhh, daughter darling. Are you having fun with young Marcus here?" He waved at Marcus jovially, hooking his arm around his daughters waist. He was slightly red in the face, probably not totally knocked for a loop, but still plenty tipsy.
Drunk men abound tonight, it seems. "Yes, Father, unfathomable fun." Her flat tone suggested otherwise as she held him up by his arm, glancing back at Marcus. "Forgive me, but I believe I should get him home as soon as possible. He tends to do regrettable things when he is in such a state." Taking Lord Arvin by the hand, Terryn led him back into the ballroom so he could say farewell to the duchess.

OOC: May we skip ahead or should we wait for everyone to be finished with the ball? Or is everyone finished with the ball?

Ariana didn’t know what was more embarrassing at the moment, the fact that the women were glaring at her, or the comments that the Duke made. Either way, in was successful in returning some color to her face. Her posture was more firm, and she no longer shook. However, her eyes still did not have that light that was present earlier that evening. That wouldn’t be returning for a while. She didn’t like revealing her weaknesses, but she supposed it was necessary for the time being. The Earl Bradford in front of her, there was something about him that attracted her. Though she could suppress blushing around him, which she thank god for, she still felt a kind of thrill around him. Against her will, her heart was desperately trying to get her mind to trust this mind. Of course, arguing with yourself gives you a rather large headache.
“Pardon my mistake Earl Bradford,” Ariana said politely, “But honestly, these titles are silly at times. We have power and position, these titles merely rank us, but to a simple peasant, does it really matter if we’re a count, or an earl, or a duke? As soon as they hear one of those titles, they think, we’re rich, we have land that they don’t. In the end, titles only rank us among the minority.”
As for his request to go out into the gardens, she was hesitant. Yes, she did want to go with him, yes her heart at least trusted him, but she had an inkling he would want to know her predicament. Did she really want to tell him yet? Would he be able to protect from her family? Family, yes, she felt a twang of jealousy watching him interact with his cousin. They seemed so happy with one another, a warm feeling. There was no such thing within her own family. Perhaps it was their grandma who kept them so close to one another? The Duchess did have a very nice reputation, and even the cackling hens would speak no wrong about her.
She hesitantly reached for his hand, and drew back slightly at the last minute, fore grasping it. There were gasps around them from the courts, and whispers ran wild already. Her reputation for rejecting all suitors seemed to have come to an end at last. Though the taking of his hand, and letting him lead her didn’t seem like that big of a deal to someone else, it was a milestone for Ariana. Never before had she trusted herself to a man so fast. She just hoped she wouldn’t regret it.

[I think Leftbehind's computer is broken. I'm in another roleplay with him and another person in that roleplay told me something was wrong with his computer.]
