When your heart is all alone every second Seems so long When it's just you, you can't see through Those ol' clouds that rain so blue ⋞Luna Davis⋟ "I really dislike bullies. How about I take control of your mind and make you start beating yourself up?"
"No one goes on an away mission alone. A squad of Marines always goes down and secures an area first. The normal transports aren't armed, but the stealth one is. And the Unity has orbital bombardment capabilities."
She hadn't caught the meaning behind the look.
"And the only weapons in the Armory are all genetically encoded to every user. We have no spares. Not to mention, the training for one would take a lot longer than three weeks. The Mark-15, Mark-17, and Mark-5 are complex weapons."
So let's put aside our foolish pride And let our hearts say hello We both agree we're just no good At bein' on our own

Amarissa Amarissa choked for a second when she said a squad of marines. "A squad of kitted out marines on a scavenging mission? You secure an area and everything's going to be gone before you land. You doubt desperate people and their ability to take as much as possible with them. And what about the weapons confiscated before we boarded your ship? I know for a fact I had at least a knife in my boot and an assault rifle in my hands before they took it."

When your heart is all alone every second Seems so long When it's just you, you can't see through Those ol' clouds that rain so blue ⋞Luna Davis⋟ "I really dislike bullies. How about I take control of your mind and make you start beating yourself up?"
Luna gave her a blank look.
"You're on a starship. With technology advanced enough to fix broken bones in a matter of minutes. That can manipulate gravity...and you're worried about obsolete weaponry, after talking about how we'd scare everyone away before we even land."
She shook her head slowly.
"Scavenging means the away team isn't making contact. And they aren't stealing anything. They are literally looking for supplies in an uninhabited area. Exactly as it sounds. Trading is a completely different story. That requires orbital surveillance. And a specialized team familiar with first contact procedures. Trading teams here would most likely be led by either Legion-Commander Celdor, Miss Serena Fayne, or Mr. Peter Ryan. On a scavenging mission, the Marines alone could handle any possible danger. The transport and the Unity are there as insurance."
She sighed and entered something into the padd with Amarissa's information.
"You'd be in the way, trying to help them with an obsolete weapon, provided anything ever happened we didn't detect from orbit. But if you absolutely must have a weapon, you will be required to undergo weapons familiarization with the Marines."
She looked back up at her. She'd taken offense to Amarissa's assumption
"I don't doubt anyone's ability to grab what they can and disappear. I've done it myself. Watched an entire city do it. I was organizing and participating in scavenging missions before your parents were born. I know the capabilities of my people and the gear they use. Don't assume that because I'm a starship Captain, I don't know what people are capable of."
So let's put aside our foolish pride And let our hearts say hello We both agree we're just no good At bein' on our own

Amarissa Amarissa didn't think that Luna understood the weapon wasn't so she could fight with the marines, though it did help. It was a good distractor if in a pinch, but mostly, she liked the comfort of thinking she had some semblance of control. Then again, this woman was an enigma, as she just revealed. Amarissa flushed with shame, feeling dumb for making such an assumption. "I apologize. I overstepped my bounds." She quickly fell silent, lacking Rose's tact to be able to actually articulate an apology conveying what she meant.

Luna waved her hand dismissively.
"It's fine. You didn't overstep any boundaries, you just assumed. It happens."
She picked the padd back up.
"If you still want on the appropriations teams, I can assign you to one. probably put you in charge of one, instead of Mr. Ryan. But to carry a weapon, you'll still need the weapon's familiarization course with the Marines."

Amarissa "'Course I'll join, need something to do besides sitting around worrying if everyone else is alright. And your right, the weapon is kind of irrelevant, don't worry about it," she said with a wave of her hand. She could always make a similar feeling object so it'd have the same psychological effect of comfort if she stuffed it in a boot,

Luna added the information, then handed Amarissa the fourth padd.
"This is yours. It will give you a layout of the ship, minus restricted areas. You'll be rooming with a Miss Kiana Soraka, if that's okay with you."
So let's put aside our foolish pride And let our hearts say hello We both agree we're just no good At bein' on our own

Amarissa Amarissa nodded her thanks, taking the pad. It was slightly mesmerizing to hold and she almost forgot her last question. She stopped at the door, turning on her heel to face Luna. "When is going to be the first scavenging mission?"

Luna shrugged. "As soon as we get hyperdrive back, we're looking for planets to get supplies on. I'll keep you updated."

Shreoake Shreoake followed the doctors directions to the letter and quickly arrived outside her destination. She read the words "Conference Room" neatly printed on the door to confirm she was indeed in the right place. She stepped up to the doors and watched as they once again automatically opened in front of her. She stepped inside the room and listened to them as they closed behind her. Though they still made her nervous she felt she was beginning to get the hang of them and this time she didn't jump at all. Besides, there was something else in this room of much greater interest. On the far side of the room the wall was made up entirely of a window looking out into space. Shreoake wandered over to the window as if drawn to it by some unseeable force. It was a sight like she had never seen before. There were so many stars in that inky black space she could not believe it. Back on earth she would occasionally catch glimpses of the sky at night when the toxic clouds would clear up enough to give her a view, but it never had looked like this. She suddenly felt small and insignificant in the vastness of space that now stretched out before her. She noticed a muddy brown ball of a planet in the foreground of her vision and knew it had to be Earth. She put her hand up to the glass as if to reach out to it, her small palm obscuring it from view. It was hard to believe just hours ago she had been all the way down there and that in several more hours it would be unable to sustain life. Shreoake continued to stand frozen in place by the window, her hand resting on the glass. Her mind was lost in the vastness of space.

Kowsauni Earth would be out of sight by now. Eight hours ago, they were passing the moon. razz When your heart is all alone every second Seems so long When it's just you, you can't see through Those ol' clouds that rain so blue ⋞Luna Davis⋟ "I really dislike bullies. Luna entered the room, engrossed in a padd, though she looked up and smiled when she saw Shreoake. She wore a purple jumpsuit with the name Davis embroidered over the left side of the chest
Reminds me of myself, back then.
"Miss Mathison?"
She kept her voice low, trying not to startle the girl? Her voice had a bit of a musical feel to it, common among her race.

Shreoake Shreoake heard the whoosh of the opening doors and the melodic voice of the captain drift to her ears, but still she continued to stare out at space. Having only picked her last name minutes before, it took her a moment to realize the captain was speaking to her. She turned around to face the captain and as she did so she realized tears were streaming down the sides of her face. Shreoake looked surprised. She held out her hands in front of her to catch the tears as they fell from her cheeks. The sight of the universe had triggered something deep down inside of her, something that she had been denied for the last two years of her existence. Finally it was able to come out.

Luna looked a little concerned as she moved to the girl's side, though she too looked out the window.
"Beautiful, isn't it? I remember when my father first took me aboard a starship. I was eight, then."
She pointed to a distant star.
"That's our destination. WX-733 Tango. long range scans show signs of a weather system, so there might be water and supplies."
She spoke casually, trying to ease the girl's emotions.
"The heavens are amazingly beautiful. And perhaps, we can show you some amazing sights, better than the vast emptiness of the starfield."

Shreoake Shreoake blushed as the the captain came up, and her eyes bashfully drifted away from Luna as she spoke. After a moment or so the girl tried to talk, but all that came up was a mixture of fractured sentences. "I'm sorry. I don't... it just... It was really rough down there. I... I had so many friends that... But I told them, I always told them--because he told me--an angel... an angel would save us. And now... and now...." Shreoake suddenly leaned against the captain, her words overwhelmed by her sobs. She tried to get a hold of herself she but could do was cry. The pent up emotions of two years of hardship were flowing out of her all at once. There was no stopping it now. All she could do now was seek solace in the one that had become their savior.
