Emm-Kaye entervixen Emm-Kaye entervixen Actually no, hehe. Though I do want to dye my own yarn and fiber someday, I'm content to just spin for now. My dream (fantasy, really) is to have my own loom...and to spin the thread to make my own cloth from. That's an awesome dream. smile Some day I want a few sheep so I can process, dye, spin and then knit my own garments. That sounds fantastically awesome. emotion_kirakira Sadly, I am allergic to sheep's wool - but I'm NOT allergic to Alpaca! I'd love to have an Alpaca ranch, and shear, process, dye, spin & weave my own things!!! Sadness about sheep wool, but alpaca is hella fun too. I learned on alpaca, actually. biggrin I've spun baby camel too, that was totally awesometastic. I loves me some baby camel. emotion_kirakira

Wow, your work is gorgeous. I really wanted to take up spinning last year, but never got around to it, maybe I'll have a go this year.

I used to have directions on how to make a drop spindle with 2 old/non-useable CD's and a wooden dowel. I've been looking for them, and seem to either have lost them or packed em up in my last move (so they're still in storage - somewhere).
Do you happen to have any idea where I could find this info again???

Might have to slap one together myself. smile Edit: I knew of them, and lots of people swear by them, but I've yet to try one out. That might have to change. biggrin

Found all the needed parts at Home Depot this weekend (will have to sand the dowel, to make it smooth). Got all excited, since the dowel was 3 feet long, so I can make three spindles!!!! Then, it dawned on me - all of my fiber is in storage...somewhere crying

As well as my spinning wheel, and several other bits and pieces for spinning, like my drum carder.

I learned on alpaca, it's a great fiber if you ask me. smile I love cotton, but I also tend to overspin it. It's just gonna take practice, heh. Have you tried yak or baby camel? I've spun a bit of both, and I love those. They're more like spinning cotton than alpaca (due to the short staple length) but if you can afford to get some to try you might like those. smile

Then failed miserably with the cotton - but I was attempting to use my spinning wheel for the first time ever with it.. redface I'd love to get my hands on just a small amount of some fiber (any fiber!), to play with for a day or so, until I can dig the good stuff out of my storage - hopefully this weekend will be nice enough to try! Seriously considering using the polyester filling I have here, and trying with it... either that, or ...hmmmmmm ...the cats could use a good brushing rofl

There are different types of cotton though, some with a super short staple and some with a longer staple (pima I think?). So maybe trying a different type of cotton would help out some. And I can send you some baby camel and some yak if you want (I have a pound of yak and a pound plus of baby camel) but it'll take a while to send some, I don't have the money to spare for postage right now so it would have to wait a week and a half. But if you're willing to wait I can totally send some your way. smile

Give me time to try to find what I already have, though...I'll let you know next week, if I need you to send a care package my way. Once I do find it, I had almost two pounds of grey alpaca to start with, and would be happy to share some with you if you'd like!
