Ivarine dressed for bed as slowly, pretending as through the unfamiliar nightgown was giving her trouble. In truth though, Queen Amber was giving her a history of the Shadow King and the Black Palace, and as usual, Ivarine was fascinated by the history. What wasn't fascinating about a living castle built entirely out of shadows and undead parts? And, another part of her told her, it's enemy intel. That she could always use.
Thus, it seemed to take her a full two hours to shower and don a simple black gown, and by then the Dark King was long finished speaking to whatever minions or subjects or mysterious voices in the throne room he cared to talk with and off doing whatever he did at night because according to the servants around the place, he certainly didn't sleep.
~Well, I'm not supposed to have this strange insomnia am I?
Not yet, Amber replied ominously before fading to silence, presumedly to let Ivarine sleep for what might be her last time.

((Sounds fine.))
Ivarine slept for what seemed like endless hours dreaming of nightmares and horrible creatures. When she awoke after what to her seemed like an eternity, she found out that not even two hours had past. Trying to coax her self back to sleep she thought of Farle and Cadence. She hoped they were alright and she also thought and hoped to see them again.
As she dozed off to sleep for the second time Queen Amber was in a quite corner of her mind plotting what to do next. She knew that due to the powers of the shadows Ivarine would end up just like her if she used her powers. That was, only after she was no longer able to sleep. The challenge Queen Amber faced was how to take down the King before Ivarine faded into nothingness....
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Farle, Cadence and Latices were making their way through the mountain terrain in what was almost complete darkness. The only light they had was a small barely lit torch that Latices was carrying. Often times Farle would fall behind and have to catch up by almost running. He was still not used to the rocks.
"Farle, do you think that maybe... maybe Ivarine can be brought back to life with the pendant in my hair?" Cadence asked Farle when Latices carried on ahead.
"I'm not sure... But I just have this feeling she's already alive. We just have to get to the castle of the dark king and kill him while trying to free her... You know that you, her and I are the ones supposed to kill him, so she can't be dead." Farle said trying to reasure Cadence while also trying to tell her that the pendant won't work.
"Are you two coming?" Latices called back a few yards ahead.
Farle grumbled, but kept going on up the rocks on the mountain. Cadence followed suit, but eventually surpassed Farle and was with Latices again.
~Darkness, ah, darkness, the alluring twin to Light... Cadence froze, icy chills shooting up her spine, hearing the foreboding whisperings associated with the amethyst in her hair. It faded as quickly and as suddenly as it had come though and Cadence was wondering if she had imagined it all when it came back, ~Queen of Gems, the answer always lives in the Queen of Gems... Ivarine flashed into her mind, eyes a cold, dead purple, almost completely swallowed by swirling shadows.
She promptly fell over her own two feet with a strangled squeak, vision blurring with a strange purple, "Ivarine!" the frantic shriek exploding from her throat echoed off the mountains in haunting waves before Cadence blacked out.
It was nighttime when Cadence finally awoke, though the light dancing around her eyes and the heat rolling off the fire told her otherwise. She half-rolled over and immediately heard footsteps coming her way. Without thinking, she'd scrambled to her feet and leapt away.
"Calm down Farle, she's fine," came a voice to her right. She flinched from that too, until her senses came around and she recognized Farle and Latices. The escaped Child of Drunesd was explaining, "Survival instincts. She'll be herself in a few moments."
"I-I'm ok," Cadence stuttered, sinking down again. "What happened? Where are we?"
Farle stared at Cadence in worry, "You don't remember anything? We were climbing up this mountain when you suddenly screamed for Ivarine and collapsed." He earned a blank stare from his friend's blue eyes and sighed, "Is it normal for that charm to cause this?" Farle asked Latices, noting Cadence's scrunched up forehead as she attempted to unearth what exactly happened.
Latices shrugged, "I don't know. The chief said that the aoi si don't like sharing secrets remember?" They both watched Cadence rub her temples in frustration, mumbling incoherently to herself.
Farle grumbled suspiciously for a minute, mumbling something about "aos si" and "Children of Drunesd" and "secrets" and the like before declaring openly, "Well, you're fine now, right? So everything's ok."
Cadence had stopped her muttering sometime during Farle's complaining and sat off to the side, observing Farle and Latices. She seemed to have gained new insight on them, and she frequently blinked or rubbed her eyes or head as if it were sore.
Unlike the both of them, Latices sat still against the rock wall, keeping an eye on both of them. Occasionally he tossed a twig or branch into their rather feeble fire, or murmured words over, as if praying. Cadence could understand him, and occasionally nodded her head or murmured a translation under her breath. This was normal though--Cadence seemed innately able to guess or "just know" almost any spoken language she stumbled across, due to her power over sounds. But what was not normal was ______
But what was not normal was the fact that she could hear him when we was so far away. Her ears were good, but they were not that good. She sighed adn touched the charm in her hair. She felt a shiver of fear, and excitment when she touched it.
"Are we staying here for the night then?" Cadence asked egar to get on with the journy.
Farle came over and touched her shoulder. "Yea. We decided that it was good to rest after you collapsed."
Cadence sighed and nodded looking off into the distance.
--->><<--- Back at camp of the Children of Drunesd, the Chief wandered through the broken hallways of his camp. He knelt and fingered a fragment of a vase that had held water. Around him, his people lamented their dead as quietly as they could. Though tears fell and men and women alike bemoaned their loss, there was sense of unity and calm mixed in with definite fright and anxiety that peeked through the anguish.
A pull at his robe caused the chief turned his head. A young boy, 8 at most, stood there, the spear in his hand taller than he was and a cloak with a hood two sizes too big trailed from his back. Four different-shaped pins held the cloak in place."____..." The meaning was unmistakable: this boy had lost three others of his family. And only one family unit housed two children: the unit of the Chief-to-be. Yet even as ___'s eyes glistened with fresh tears, he asked evenly in a hoarse, high voice:
"Grand Father, the Prophecy of the ancient aos si has begun now, hasn't it?"
"Yes, son. It has." He paused, knowing what was to be done. The other Children in the other regions much know what had transgressed. "But...your brother..."
"I can climb the mountain," ___ said, determination radiating off of him. "It is the Way. ___ and I climb together a lot. If she could come with me..I'm sure I could..."
He considered the boy's words. "It was not said two people could not light the torch to notify the others. Unusual, but...very well, ____. You will light the Amaranthine Torch."
---->><<--- (( I think I confused myself just writing the post. Basically I would think that they would refer to everyone as some sort of family (the chief being the "Grandfather"/ Grandmother/ whatever that ends up to be.)
Amaranthine is just a fancy word for purple. Because the color violet seems to be a motif in this story.
Would this also be a good place to end the chapter and start chapter 3?))
"Aitski..." The meaning was unmistakable: this boy had lost three others of his family. Yet even as Aitski's eyes glistened with fresh tears, he asked evenly in a hoarse, high voice:
"Grand Father, the Prophecy of the ancient aos si has begun now, hasn't it?"
"Yes, son. It has." He paused, knowing what was to be done. The other Children in the other regions much know what had transgressed. "But...your brother..."
"I can climb the mountain," Aitski said, determination radiating off of him. "It is the Way. Ameloria and I climb together a lot. If she could come with me..I'm sure I could..."
He considered the boy's words. "It was not said two people could not light the torch to notify the others. Unusual, but...very well, Aitski. You will light the Amaranthine Torch."
The boy nodded and turned to find the girl he had mentioned. The Chief sighed tiredly, elemental shadows were hardly the aggressive type, if the normally peaceful beings were becoming violent, how long until the bloodthirsty beings became even more bloodthirsty?
"Chief?..." Said person turned around to see another one of the Children standing there, shuffling his feet.
"Yes?"
"Latices is gone. The aoi si and her companion have vanished as well." -----------------------------------------
Cadence slept fitfully that night, she often woke up in a cold sweat, sure that Ivarine or rather, the shadow-possessed version of her friend was going to kill her. Other times, she woke up because the dream Ivarine had beseeched her for help. Neither of the dreams put her at ease, Farle had asked her if she was okay when he noticed the panicked expression on her face once when she had woken up, but Cadence had told him it was just a bad dream. Now she wasn't so sure. After fifteenth time jerked awake from terror, she touched the charm in her hair whispering desperately in a language she had thought she had forgotten, "Segðu mér, vinsamlegast segðu mér, hvað viltu að ég reikna út?"
There was a sighing whisper, then nothing. Cadence fought her stinging eyes as she laid back down on the ground, trying to fall asleep again, Why do I have to be the chosen one of the prophecy?
((I edited my post above for continuity.))
Why do I have to be the chosen one of the prophecy? Cadence hugged her knees and shut her eyes, sobbing silently. Am I even the chosen one? What if they have it all wrong? She turned around, blinking, and stared at her companions. Farle was on the other side of the fire, one hand on his sword. He made mumbling sounds, but she could never decipher a comprehensible word. Cadence looked away, assured everything was normal for him.
Her gaze finally rested on Latices. For a moment, she felt a flash of resentment towards the Child of Drunesd. Why did he get involved? Who was he to tell her who she was? But the anger lasted only a second and she was tearing up again after it. Who was she to resent his doing what he felt was his duty? She looked away, knowing why: She missed her friend. She missed her closest confidant since she and Farle left ___________ Farle's hometown. She missed Ivarine. Cadence turned over again, trying not to imagine what she would be doing had Ivarine been here instead of Latices.
She couldn't. -----------------------------------------
"And then the drone was like, 'You can't beat me!' so I threw the shard of ice in my hand at him and punched him down while he was frozen. Totally. Beaten." Ivarine laughed, kicking her legs out and leaning back against the stone wall.
Cadence smiled, more at her friend's laughter than at the story. "My day was much less eventful. After you and Farle took off I moped around the campsite shooting holes in rocks until I didn't have any more pebbles."
Ivarine howled with laughter anyways. "Who needs rocks?" she said, forming a fist-sized block of ice. "Show me!"
Cadence picked her bow up and Ivarine tossed the ice cube. Halfway over the fire, a high-pitched squeak sounded and the ice cube shattered, showering snow-like grains on Farle's back. He turned from driving his sword into a soft patch of ground, an unamused expression on his face.
"We should be going to sleep," Farle said, dusting off and wrapping his jacket around him like a blanket before lying down. "We have a lot of ground to cover tomorrow.
"Spoil-sport," Ivarine teased. "Cadence! Can you do that with a low note?"
The other girl accepted the challenge with a wry smile. Farle grumbled when harmless ice scattered over his jacket again and Ivarine cheered. The girls continued long into the night, chattering and occasionally giggling about various events in their day and their pasts. ---------------------------------
"Cadence, Cadence...oi, Cadence. Time to get up," Farle said, shaking the newly discovered aos si. He glanced outside the cave, where Latices was looking around and staring at the dawn. "Cadence!"
Cadence rolled over, muttering about not having any sleep but didn't open her eyes. She waved her hand for him to go away and Farle sighed before stowing his sword back into its sheath. As he joined Latices outside, he picked grit out of the fur of his jacket and shrugged it on.
"Good morning... Where are you headed?" the Child of Drunesd asked, not looking at him.
Farle pursed his lips before answering. "____"
((We're totally going to have to revise if we finish this. -.- I guessed that Ivarine would be a gregarious when she wasn't the captive of her nemesis >_< I vaguely remember some incongruity between Farle's weapon and magic as well. Oh well.
Whoa. Long post. razz I'll not do this again >.< Sorry! I'm procrastinating studying for my calc final >_<
Farle pursed his lips before answering, "We were headed toward a village called Aatioh, but, now that we've lost the only member of our group that actually knows the way there, we're mainly just trying to figure out a way to destroy the Dark Lord." Latices turned to stare at him, then his eyes flickered back to Cadence's prone form.
"What does the aoi si say?"
Cadence turned her heavy head to face Latices and willed her tired eyes to stay open, "I say...*yawn* let me go to sleep." With that, Cadence rolled over and fell into a pleasantly dreamless sleep, the silver charm making a soft tinkling sound as it clinked against the pebbly ground. Then it glowed purple casting the soft light into the two boys' faces, She lives. Go save her from shadows...
The light faded as suddenly as it had appeared, leaving both boys a little dazed. Finally, Latices dug his spear into the ground and crossed his arms. "Well?" he asked expectantly. Farle shot him an irritated look but could not deny seeing the strange light and letters.
"Ivarine Callias. That's what it means. She was the third member of our party. We...thought she had died."
"Evidently not," Latices's scowl seemed etched onto his face as soon as Farle mentioned her name. He made a little sound somewhere between a scoff and a huff.
Confused, Farle turned away, glancing over Cadence's sleeping figure. He sighed and sat on the stone ground, resuming picking the dirt out of his jacket.
An hour must have passed in uncomfortable silence before Latices said, still upset, "I know the direction of Aatioh. Not precisely where it is, but I know of its direction."
Farle raised and eyebrow and looked over at the Child of Durnsd. "Where?"
"Where sky touches sea Where the sun started to be where grains grow tall as I, and where all go to die."
Farle was silent at this and another silent minute skipped between them before Farle breathed, "That was the same poem Ivarine told us."
It was Latices's turn to raise an eyebrow, but Farle was so engrossed in his thinking that he didn't even notice. If what Latices said was true, they could head onwards to Aatioh. There was hope for their quest yet!
Yet...what was their quest? Farle suppressed that thought the moment it dared come up. No. The seer had said it was the only way to truly defeat the Dark Lord. This was the way. They must proceed. But... another part fo him told him there was another way, one that didn't involve tracking down a plethora of dangerous cities, obscure towns and nonexistent villages and finding "trinkets" there.
"Trinkets".... he stared at the charm in Cadence's hair for a long moment, wondering if that was the object the seer had been talking about.
"Well?" Latices's gruff voice startled him out of his musings. "To Aatioh then? Or are we marching into the Dark Palace?"
"I say...Aatioh, it was where the seer said we would get some answers after all..." Farle muttered, trying to keep the indecisiveness out of his voice. Latices nodded and went to shake Cadence back to wakefulness. Cadence opened her blue eyes with a huff of annoyance and sat up again, rubbing her eyes.
"Aatioh? Ok, I'm coming..." She promptly collapsed back into a heap and went back to sleep. Farle sighed and turned to Latices.
"I guess we'll have to let her sleep then?" Latices' mouth quirked.
"Not if I can enlist the help of the mountain creatures to carry her."
