Tsurai sighed, his stomach rumbling. "Yeah, I guess," he replied, not too enthusiastic about picking up the pace.

After a few minutes, he asked, "Do you think there will be people there?"

Isiah's brow furrowed a little, all ready starting to shine with sweat. "Maybe. Maybe not. Big cities were supposed to have more vaults, though, so I'd wager they're still all underground." He sighed, wiping his brow clean. "Why, sick of me all ready?"

Tsurai was taken aback a bit by the comment. "No, I just.. Well, there's nothing really to do..."

He groaned slightly, trying to reword his thoughts. "I mean, I figured this would be a good change of scenery or something but, I'm still bored out of my mind. Though it is good to walk, I'm..." His voice went soft and his eyes closed a bit, ".... Really tired..." He didn't want to complain, though, so rushed passed that particular subject into another one.

"It would just be nice to like, talk about something... Or something..."
Isiah was hard to talk to. Not that Tsurai was much different, but...

Isiah glanced back at him over his shoulder. He was more than content with silence. It gave him time to think. And there was a lot of thinking to be done, believe it or not, since survival was on the line and it was fairly obvious that Tsurai didn't have his head on straight enough to be of much help. "Well.. sure," he grunted. "You give me a subject I guess."

Tsurai took in a deep breath, trying to think of something to talk about. He didn't exactly expect Isiah to take him seriously.

"Well.... Uh. What was your family like...?"

Isiah turned his head away, laughing. He was starting to think the kid was psychic and picking out his most uncomfortable subjects on purpose. "Blood family I didn't exactly get along with too great," he mumbled. "Irish catholic. Strict. I didn't stay after I turned seventeen, though. Yours?"

Tsurai creased his brows, suddenly feeling outcast as Isiah laughed.
Then, of course, the question was turned on him, which made it all the worse.

"My family sucked too. I worked with them. Or, under them, I guess. Family business and all." he waved his hand. "Didn't know how to get out of it. Couldn't just run away, I had... Obligations." A daughter. But he wanted to leave her out of this.

"This is the best that could happen to me I guess. But you say blood family like you had another. What, you were a member of a gang or something?"
Tsurai had been a member briefly of one. But his parents had gotten rid of that affiliation rather quickly.

Isiah paused in step for a moment as if the decision making process made the rest of his brain stop before he started up again. "Yeah," he began. "You asked about the tatts, right?" He shrugged, wiping his brow as the sun beat down on them. His undershirt was soaked in sweat by now. He pulled the duffel off of his shoulder for a moment, yanking it off to show the full extent of ink on his torso.

He was covered, head to toe, every visible point inked in a variety of flat black, simplistic, tribal designs that disappeared into his hairline. He tucked his soaked undershirt behind his belt, sighing. "That's where they're from. Second family."

Tsurai stopped, taking a step back in surprise at Isiah's sudden impulse to share.

It took a moment for the wheels in Tsurai's head to turn. A gang that tattooed every part of themselves? Wasn't there a gang like that where he was from?
"I think I've heard of those..." His eyes lit up after a minute, and he slapped his fist into an open palm.
"Yeah, the, uh.. The dogs or the wolves. The, uh, s**t... What was the name... Denizens or something? You were with those guys?"

Tsurai was fairly impressed, but also skeptical.
Weren't they a bunch of ruthless drug addicts who played fight club a lot?
Didn't Isiah say he wanted to be a cop?
How could that ever work out...?

Isiah twitched visibly. The kid knew a lot more than he gave him credit for. He must have been from a crime family, or something more sinister. "Uh," he stuttered. "Yeah, you got it." He wondered, briefly, how much further the kid would push. If he wanted to. He then began to wonder why he cared how much the kid knew. For all intents and purposes everyone who knew him as an upstanding citizen on the side of the law was dead. He had nothing to hide from anymore.

Tsurai saw the twitch, but it didn't really register that it was because Isiah uncomfortable. He just had one more question.

"....Why? You don't seem like the type to be involved with them. And you said you wanted to be a cop, right? That would've gone against everything they were about."

Tsurai scowled a bit. He'd never dealt with the gang himself but if he remembered correctly, his family had spoken of them and how difficult they had been to deal with.

Didn't Isia say he was from New York, too? Some gang to spread across the country like that. More like a cult, really. He wondered if the ideals of the gang varied depending on their location. Probably not.
Tsurai hmphed.

"I was young," he sputtered. "I started down the road of law enforcement before I got involved with them, and yeah, it didn't work out so great." He shrugged, turning his head to spit. "It didn't go against everything. Just how we made money.. and ******** if I really care about what people do in their spare time." Meaning, drugs. "I just wanted to use my skills for something worthwhile, but my.." He paused. "New family wanted to use my in to their advantage, and after they'd taken me in, who am I to say no?"

"What skills? Fighting?" That and drug trafficking, well, and tattooing, were the only things that group had ever done.

He exhaled heavily.
"Well, I don't know a lot about them, my parents just said they were hard to deal with it." He waved his hand, as if shooing away the subject. It wasn't important.

"Whatever. It's good you were able to get out of it without being hurt too bad, if that's what you wanted."

He furrowed his brow forward. He was glad he was ahead of Tsurai so the boy couldn't see his face. He didn't get out of it without a fair share of pain, and the running, hunger and desperation that followed was no better. "Yeah," he managed at long last. "I guess."

He glanced at him over his shoulder once the memories had washed from his countenance, smiling. "Dealing with us, huh? You must be the progeny of someone important."

Tsurai turned his face away as he walked, looking instead to the terrain.
"Well, I, uh..." he frowned, calming himself. "Something like that, I guess."

He looked down at the ground after a moment. "I just wanted out, but they had a stranglehold over me. Even if the whole world's gone, I'm glad they are too."

Tsurai fiddled with the dog tags around his neck, looking them over, as if to remind him of what he'd been through. The chain was too small to slip over his head, and the dogtags themselves were blank. That was the trademark of the DuPloy grunts. The DuPloys were pretty much the #1 source for drugs, had many connections and, while mostly concentrated in Georgia and Florida, had begun to expand, as evidenced by Tsurai's little family trip to new york.

The blank dogtags symbolized a number of things. Number one being that those wearing them were unimportant- easy to choke. And if they died, they couldn't be identified(or rather, shouldn't). That was the idea, anyway.

Tsurai let go of the chain after pulling on it slightly and continued to look at the ground as he followed Isiah.
