Mattie’s charm was stronger on people that were attracted to him. Marquis had worked this out a little while ago, considering only he and a few other people around the school were reduced to quivering wrecks whenever Mattie got too close. The revelation wasn’t that shocking to the blonde – he’d dated a few girls since first year, but he’d never been able to ditch Mattie for them – but it did make him feel awkward at times. Like now, when the pleasant, tingly feeling and butterflies lingered in his stomach even when Mattie moved away. An involuntary shiver ran through his body, and he tried to shrug it off as casual while sticking his hands into his pockets.

”Well... yeah, ‘course.” After the djinni incident, the gun rarely left Marquis’ side. Unlike Mattie, though, he was seeing this djinni thing as more of a threat. After all, if it was magical then it was likely it had powers they hadn’t seen yet. ”But don’t’cha think we should, yanno, lookit up a bit more ‘fore we go chargin’ in?”

It was a worry when Marquis, of all people, was your voice of reason in a group. ”M’really not sure ‘bout this, mate. S’not like we’re qualified... n’if it’s there n’the teachers dun know, s’likely ta be worse than we reckon... “

He’d still follow Mattie, though. Even if it was stupid.

Mattie scowled at the idea of handing in the djinni to the authority. He'd found it first, so he was going to fight it. Well, technicaly Marquis had found it. Well, it you wanted to get technical, that kid with the scissors in his gut had found it first, but he was being homeschooled now. So Marquis was the closest option. "We found it." He summarized. "We don't even have to beat it. Just get it's name."

It couldn't be that hard. It was trying to be civil with Marquis before, wasn't it? Whatever. It could talk about turkeys again or something. They could bring an offering. Hmph. Mattie stopped in the hallway and turned on Marquis again. "Doesn't it bother you?"

Mattie glared at Marquis in a way he only rarely did. He wasn't mad at him, but he was making a point. "We ran, and we never knew what we were doing. We ran."

Mattie hated running from a fight. He wanted to finish the fight with that thing if it ended up killing him. "Loyalty from a powerful entity doesn't sound bad, either."

Whoops. Hadn't meant to say that out loud. He caught a few stray looks from passerbys. Couldn't be helped.

To Marquis, this was sounding worse with every second. Unlike Mattie, it seemed, the blonde had no issues with running to live and fight another day. It was only practical, when you were out of your depth and faced with something dangerous. No shame in living, after all... but Slytherins had pride issues. Marquis was sure it was part of the house requirements, that goddamn pride. Mattie’s streak was a mile wide, that was for sure.

”But mate, she flippn’ went at me with scissors last time... “ Now don’t misinterpret this as Marquis being a chicken. He was just a little more cautious. He stopped dead, though, under Mattie’s glare and shrunk just a little bit further. Who knew if Mattie was really pissed at him or not, but that glare was scorching. ”What else could we’ve done, mate?”

It was unlikely the creature would be so lenient on them if they ran into it again, after Marquis’ shooting it. If anything, it was probably going to go after him more than Mattie, but whatever. ”We really should look’up some more, though... “

He just about slapped his forehead as Mattie continued. ”Oh ya would be thinkin’ o’that. Might not be worth it, mate. What the ‘ell’ya gunna fight ‘er with, n’way?

"Well last time we were unprepared." Mattie reasoned. This time they knew what to fight her with. They knew what she looked like, and they knew where to find her. What more did they need to know? She already spoke the damn language. If she started speaking somethin' else, it wasn't their bloody fault.

"We know she hates metal, so your gun is our last resort. Our finishing blow if I can't get the name." Mattie nodded at him. "I'll bring... a Slytherin towel rack."

Those were pure silver. That would do some damage. Mattie scowled at Marquis. Of course he was thinking about the loyalty bargain. What the hell else could they get from this bloody thing? It was a ******** djinni, not a freakin' ogre. "Well, what do you expect, a pat on the back from it?" Mattie scoffed. Honestly.

He motioned towards the left. He was going to drop off a few things at the Slytherin dorms. "So. Today or tomorrow?" He'd already decided it was going to happen.

Sometimes, Mattie could be a real d**k. Even Marquis could see why the boy didn’t have all that many friends, if any other than him, and it was at times like this that Marquis questioned... but no, they were friends – he thought – so snapping wouldn’t do much good. ”M’gunna be happy if we get outta this s**t alive.” he muttered darkly, still not happy. ”N’what’re ya gunna do if yer... ‘skill’ doesn’t work on her, mm?”

But Mattie was already set, so Marquis just sighed with a shoulder slump. He wasn’t really sure he wanted loyalty from a djinni, not without knowing wwhat she could offer them, but when Mattie set his mind on something there was almost no way to get him off the subject. Take Marquis’ gun, for example. He still had to show it to the youngerboy on the occasion, like it was some low-addictive drug that Mattie had a taste for. It was even a little disconcerting.

Another sigh. Better ta leave’it ‘till t’morow. Sunday, n’all, not so many people ta get in the way.” Because that would be awkward, being caught in the middle of a battle with a djinni. And then they’d have to explain.

”Shall we turn’in, then, mate?” Dinner had been over hours ago, and curfew was slowly approaching. Of course, that didn’t stop either of them being out after hours, but still.

Mattie shrugged off Marquis' fretting. They'd be fine. That thing went down like it had... Well, like it had been shot. A magical creature that weak was nothing. They were taking on a freakin' house elf. Nothing to be upset about. Marquis was just fretting because of his scar and whatnot. But he was armed with the gun, so he'd be alright. And afterwards, Mattie expected his confidence would be so high, that he'd be willing to give Mattie lessons on how to use the gun. Mattie looked rather smug.

"It'll work." Mattie said flatly. Tomorrow, hm? Whatever. He'd kinda wanted to do it now, but-- s**t. Mattie spotted whats-her-name coming, and coming fast. Mattie swore violently. Uhm, uhm... Mattie grabbed Marquis by his front collar and pulled him into a hallway to hide, and flattening against a wall in hopes of at least temporary invisibility. Hopefully, by the grace of Slytherin, they hadn't been spotted.

Then again, Mattie was six feet tall, Veela, and not at all graceful. ******** saw you, you b*****d!" That horrid voice screeched.

Marquis felt otherwise. Still, they were about to part ways and head in for the night when the unmistakably nasal sounds of that girl echoed through the corridors. By this point his collar had been grabbed and his back had collided with a wall, and he could feel heat rolling off Mattie as he pretty much pressed against him. Whatever Mattie’s ‘fiancé’ was talking about was quickly lost on the blonde as every sound in the corridor began to take on a gurgling effect, like he was hearing it under a few feet of water. It was probably a good thing Mattie wasn’t looking at him right now, because Marquis was certain he was a quivering, sordid wreck from the full on contact.

Agatha, however, did notice. The look she sent Marquis was nothing short of lethal, and while she couldn’t wrench Mattie off the other boy she certainly looked like she wanted to. ”How could you, Mattie de’Medici! I should ask your mother to push the wedding date forward so we can stop this nonsense.”

By now, Mattie had pushed away from Marquis leaving the blonde against the wall, and Agatha used this window of opportunity to get closer to the blonde. A finger was thrust towards his nose, and Marquis looked at it, still slightly dazed. ”And you. Stay away from Mattie, you little slut!”

”The ******** you on ‘bout, woman?” Was Marquis’ very confused response. Agatha looked about to slap him.

Augh. Fiance's were supposed to be sweet and forgiving. What the hell happened to distance? But when Agatha shook her finger at Marquis, something in Mattie just took over. He needed to get in-between the two of them. He pushed her finger aside and gave her his worst glare. "You aren't worthy, never mind capable, of polishing his shoes. Watch your mouth, you corporate whore."

Mattie was seething. He didn't have many friends, hell Marquis was his only friend. And for that, he was extremely protective of him. Agatha had no right to insult him. But the b***h didn't seem to agree with that logic. She sneered at Marquis through Mattie. "You think you know what he is and how to deal with him?" She snapped. "How about this?"

Her wrist flew up and snatched a few hairs off the top of his head before he could even protest. She scowled at Marquis. "You know nothing about him. Stay away! He's mine!"

Agatha stormed off. And there left on the floor, surrounded by the clothes of Mattie de'Medici, was a very stunned black leopard kitten that looked very much like it wanted to claw something. Namely, Agatha.

By this stage of the game, Marquis had regained his wits and was watching the scene with bemusement. This is why he’d never understood arranged marriages... sure, in the old days when women were forced to be subservient they might have worked, but in this day and age? It was a ridiculous notion to think it would ever work. In all honesty, he wasn’t sure this Agatha chick would be able to cope with Mattie on a regular basis... but he wasn’t brave enough to say that right now. Not with her looking murderous like that. It was around then that everything started happening at once. Agatha was screaming at him about not knowing anything about Mattie – ridiculous, really, since they were together most of the time – and then she and Mattie were both gone.

Just gone. Marquis blinked. Agatha was storming off down the corridor, but Mattie? How the hell could a giant like that just up and vanish into thin air? It was around then that Marquis looked down... and cooed. Oh, he was just adorable! He vaguely recognised that this was Mattie he was talking about, in some manner anyway, but that didn’t stop him squatting down and reaching out his hand to run it across the cub’s head. He just couldn’t help it.

”Mate?” The question was quiet. Marquis was relatively sure Mattie didn’t want people to know that this had happened, whatever ‘this’ was, but he still wasn’t 100% sure that this was his best friend. Who else could it be... ”Er... nod if you cn’understand me, mate.”

Mattie was not happy. Not at ALL. Not in the least bit not in the slightest, not in the--askdjfhasdaf. What the ******** was that? Mattie pressed against whatever rubbed the back of his head involuntarily. How embarassing.

"Mate? Er... nod if you cn’understand me, mate."

It was Marquis. Mattie let out a small growl, equivalent to his human grumblings. He swished around on all fours and peered up at Marquis with jet black eyes and nodded. Gods he hated this. A lot. Some girl walking by cooed at him. He snarled and sent her squealing away. Hmph.

While Mattie might have been embarrassed, Marquis was completely charmed... and not in the Veela sense of the word. Whoever thought Mattie could be so cute? Still, as the leopard cub growled and scared away a poor Ravenclaw that was passing by, Marquis had a distinct feeling that he should be getting Mattie somewhere more private, where less people could see him in this... state of affairs. So without bothering to ask for permission, the blonde scooped an arm under Mattie’s belly and hefted him up to his chest, holding him like he would a puppy.

”Oof... yer’eavy as a cat, mate.” He teased as he moved Mattie around for a few moments, trying to get a comfortable grip on the cub. When you thought about it, it was strange; usually, were he anything near this close to the Veela, he’d be a puddle of mush and blabber but in this form, Marquis didn’t feel even the slightest pull of Veela charm. It was something of a relief; the last thing he needed was to be going goo-goo over a leopard. How would you explain that one?

So Marquis took him the only place he could think of: Gryffindor Tower. He had the room to himself at the moment, what with one of the Gryffindors in the infirmary with a nasty flu, and the other one constantly over in the girl’s dorm with his girlfriend. Anyone who asked got a hasty reply about the cub being ‘an extra credit project’ for some mumbled class, and Mattie would have felt Marquis’ relief as he finally locked his dorm room door behind him.

Phewph... that’s a hike, when yer carryin’ somethin’. He said, jovial as he plopped Mattie down on his bed. This was actually the first time Mattie had ever been in his room, with Marquis visiting the Slytherin rooms far more often if they needed privacy at all. The entire place was adorned in dark woods, burgundies and golds and creams, and while it was a little more worn than the Slytherin dorms, it certainly looked comfy and loved.

”So ‘ow’long’s this last... or should I say, are ya gunna turn back at all?” Perhaps better to stick to the yes/no questions. Marquis plonked himself down on the bed, resting against the headboard and studying the cub sitting nearby.

Talk about awkward. Mattie hadn't felt this out of place in a long time. He'd done his best to make sure it was well known he was on his own side, too. He'd hissed at ever Gryffinbrat and Gryffinwhore he'd passed on his way to Gryffindork's room. And the whole set up was just... cosy. It was weird. There was nothing cold-silver about it. Everything he leaned on was warm and fluffy. He felt like he was going to be eaten by the mattress. He pawed at it for a bit.

At Marquis' question, he nodded. Gods, was this mattress made of feather too? It was ridiculous! Mattie squirmed a wriggled, trying to not get himself swallowed, until he finally just latched himself onto Marquis' knees. Marquis would just have to deal with it. Mattie growled out his complaint of Gryffindor common rooms. They weren't up to snuff.

Well if you were to ask Marquis, he’d say his room was very comfortable. He quite liked it’s embracing qualities, and he’d never felt even remotely threatened in there, not even when Peeves had decided to spend the night. Everything about Mattie’s room was cold, and Marquis has an aversion to the cold that he could never quite explain. The dungeons in winter were hell on earth, in his humble opinion, and it took Mattie’s dragging to get him down there. The tower, though, was always just the right temperature. Must have been a spell, or something.

Well, Mattie was going to turn back. That was good news, at least. ”Do ya know ‘ow long it’ll be? M’mean, yer free ta stay the night if yer not changed, the other blokes aren’t comin’ back.” He wasn’t sure if Mattie would take him up on that even if he was still a leopard. The Slytherin’s growls and grumps were quite clear even to him that this room had not met his approval. So he scooped the kitten up and plonked him on his lap, instead of dealing with Mattie’s claws in his knees. They were sharp! Without even meaning to, one of the blonde’s hand reached down and started petting Mattie like one would a cat. It was more habit than anything else, as they just... waited.

Mattie would later say this never happened, but he purred. softly at first, and then loud as hell at being pet. He was used to being laughed at for transforming. It wasn't a sightly thing for Veela, losing your charm. You were lowered to the level of "normies". Mattie curled himself up and tried to get himself comfortable. It wasn't predictable when he would turn back. It could be an hour, or even ten minutes. Hell it could even be--- s**t.

He felt that tingling feeling, and before he had time to scramble off of Marquis, he was naked and on top of the boy. "Uh." Mattie swallowed roughly. He flushed a little. "I, uh."

s**t.

Marquis’ insides churned happily. Cats were always nice, even angry ones like Mattie here, and there was something very satisfying about having one curled up in your lap and purring. It was calming, more than anything, and for now it let Marquis get his mind off their imminent death and destruction tomorrow. Gods, going after a djinni, was Mattie out of his mind? There was going to be something go wrong, he just knew it, and...

All thoughts of tomorrow, or even today, were wiped from his mind in a flash. The Veela charm hit him like a sack of wet cement, and as he sat propped up against the headboard, he suddenly had a very large, heavy and naked magical creature sitting on top of him. Marquis’ logical mind died at the sight, aside from the fast and repeated phrase: ohmygodohmygodohmygod.

It really, really wasn’t helping that he was attracted to Mattie normally, either. Eyes wide and starting to glaze over, Marquis took a very long, very slow look at just what had fallen into his lap. This wasn’t normal for him; were he not under charm Marquis probably would have looked straight away out of embarrassment, but with lust coursing through his veins... he took a nice, long look.

”That... was fast.” The words were halting, slightly off-kilter with Marquis’s normal tone as he sat up a little and reached out, hand coming into contact with Mattie’s shoulder. The touch was rather light, but he continued running his fingers down the other man’s arm. Slowly. If given another half a minute, he was going to launch himself at the other boy.
