I'm planning on cutting and dyeing my hair.
I'm bored with the Ginger Twist.

I've been talked out of black with blue highlights because it would probably look like s**t when the black fades, or the roots start growing out.

Any suggestions?

Black shouldn't necessarily fade - I'm naturally mousey brown/blonde but my black stays put; I've only once or twice noticed it going to a REALLY dark brown (so dark you can't notice the fading), and roots are quite easily conquered with a root-dying kit

The blue would be hard to pull off unless you have virgin white hair when you go to dye it (honestly, the slightest tinge of yellow from bleaching and it'll go tits up.) and it will fade like nobodies business.

Take into consideration your skin colour/type (i.e I'm very pale but I have olive skintones) when you pick a colour, otherwise it could look bizarre. If you want black, talk to your hairdresser or someone who knows a lot about it and I'm sure they'll sort something out for you, or set you in the right direction.

I've dyed my hair blue tons of times, and Akiko is right. Your hair needs to be pretty much blonde or white already.

That being said, I've also sort of done the black with blue idea. Though, I more or less just accented the black. Made it so the hair shimmer blue, looked blue in the light. Not a bad look.

What brands d'you recommend for black?

My hair's naturally an ash blonde. Blonde towards the top with darker hilights and mousey browns underneath. It's currently dyed a red-brown.
I'm prone to switching colours a couple times a year, and I've heard black does not take well to being dyed over. I've had friends who ended up with either a goldfish colour or something roughly the hue of pond scum when they tried to redye black hair another colour. I'm afraid it'll go very wrong if I try to dye my hair after it's been black.

When bleached, my hair has held pink and purple tolerably well. The blue was only left in like, 30 mins, so maybe if I left it in longer and used a blow dryer, blue would last?

Also, my hair is curly, so it's hard for me to hilight it with any sort of grace. I either end up with too little or too much, and I don't really want to dye my whole head blue or purple or anything.

Schwarzkopf XXL live range they always go down smooth!
PostPosted: Wed Jan 28, 2009 3:06 am

Schwarxkopf is good for a lot of colours, but I find their black is a bit flat compared to other brands. (I'm using Superdrugs own; even though it's cheaper than a lot of other dyes, it's fantastic.) Loreal are good for black dye, but obviously they're a little pricey.

Black doesn't take well to be dyed over, but if you'd want a change that badly you could strip it out. If you choose to do that you'll need to get it done professionally, it's not something I'd recomend doing yourself. Once the colour has been stripped your free to dye it almost any colour without massive problems. (I went from black, to red, to pink. Zero problems.)

It's nothing to do with how long you leave the dye on, or the heat you apply. That just intensifies the colour, rather than prolonging fading. Blue is just one of those tricky colours that even some hairdressers have problems with. Unless your willing to top up the dye every couple of days (depending on how often you wash it), it isn't worth it.

If your wanting some form of blue in your hair, your best bet would be clip-in extensions (I currently have some in blood red and emerald green, since I can't dye the chunks of hair I usualy would - Yay Deathawk; and they're fantastic), or picking a blue/black dye (e.g. Schwarzkopf's Cosmic Blue.. or something similar. I used to use it.) but obviously, that will cover your whole head, and depending on the shade you dye from, it can be a dark blue, or it can be black with blue highlights in bright light.

If your hair is super curly, or just a bit tricky, try investing in a highlighting cap. They aren't the most flattering things to walk around the house in during the dying process, but it allows you to pull strands of hair through the cap to be dyed seperately; meaning you can highlight the right amount of hair for you.

I shouldn't write this much on a morning! I hope that helps Dae.
