I've been throwing small(Not like tiny, but relatively small usually 5-6 inches tall, as unfired stoneware.) vases, and carving designs into them. I'm going to glaze most of them with green celadon, and maybe do some colored under-glazing and glaze layering, with thing's like indigo float and albany slip brown, which are two high fire glazes made by Amaco

I still need to learn how to mix my own glazes. I have always been pretty good with chemistry, so I might even teach myself. I just feel like that'd be a much bigger investment, when I don't even know if I'll have access to a potter's wheel after this semester.

I'll try to remember to take some pictures. I'll post them here, but I'm trying to get back into blogging with tumblr ( http://beanman.tumblr.com )

I've been on pinterest so I learned a few new things. I learned how to turn an old entertainment centre into a miniature kitchen for kids, and also how to turn one into a full on decked out make-up or storage station.
Also learned how to clean out light bulbs, hollow out an old book and turn mason jars into a chandelier. :3

@sezuko: the mason jar chandelier sounds interesting, do you have a link by chance?

More of the same here, work work work, filing my taxes this week, ordering stuff online next week specifically a 1hp electric motor with six stage step pulleys to give me variable speeds on my grinder (not really variable...but i'll have 6 seperate speeds instead of my current set-up that provides me with one speed which is ridiculously fast for some things and not fast enough for others) Plus its a 1 horsepower motor which will be significantly better than the current set-up that has only 1/3rd of a horsepower which is really underpowered for metal working because it stalls out so easily when i'm removing large amounts of excess at a time. Also ordering a fancy little doo-dad that tells me when i'm holding the knife at the same angle consistently so my bevels will be perfectly straight and even which means better quality and better performance.
Might buy a new flashlight, new pocketknife (broke my favorite one so i need to replace it) and need to put new tires on the van soon.

I think I am.
It's stuff that you Carry Every Day (captain obvious reporting for duty! rofl ) that can be used in a survival-type situation, like tiny flashlights, matches, pocketknife, other small but useful things.

@ rislin: I was thinking about starting a thread about it but i think it might be more suited to this one but i'm not sure.
Just wondering what other folks include in their EDC.

I carry a Garrity led flashlight for whenever i need some light for various tasks, i also carry a Benchmade pocketknife, a lighter, several pens and a sharpie marker, little notebook for jotting things down, and a cellphone. Thinking about adding a multitool of some sort possibly a Gerber Suspension or Diesel.
That's all in addition to the standard stuff like a wallet and key's. Might also switch to a higher end flashlight with longer battery life and brighter bulbs and switch to carrying a smaller pocketknife because the benchmade has like a 4" blade which i think is over my states carry limit.

No survival kit but it'll get me through everything short of a serious survival situation. What does everybody else carry? Anything at all?

I don't leave the house much, so I don't have much use for one.
That, and I live near the middle of a small-but-big-enough town, so if there is a *real* emergency while I am out, I am surrounded by places I can grab a flashlight/matches/etc, and not really a situation where I would need survival gear. I'm never more than a 20-minute walk from home, along busy streets.

My keychain has a tiny LED flashlight I got for free, but it is one of these things: (link), so I'm not sure how much use it would be! It's good for if I drop something and need to find it, though.

@ teh_plague: Congratulations! Looks like things have finally turned your way---about time! Sounds like you're in the perfect place for you!

EDC? Well, I finally started carrying a handbag again, so there's tons of room for stuff. Normal girl stuff, plus an emergency radio/weather radio/siren/flashlight, mirror, matches, knife, multitool, space blanket, basic first-aid kit, rubber bands, small stash of cash (wrapped coins only, very heavy, I figure that would be a good weapon if I needed one), small "snacks" like SlimJims, chocolate, and crackers, plus always a bottle of water and the phone. Getting stronger every day, lol! The pocket Constitution, etc., too. My Bible, which is over 40 years old, and looks it. Digital camera, sketchbook and pencils, extra socks. And you gotta know that the trunk of the car looks like I'm ready for a camping trip. Just pays to be prepared around here.

Yeah, the duct tape is in the trunk. rofl

Found this on Pinterest. Have actually been working on my emergency kits lately because it is the beginning of hurricane season along the gulf. I keep a first aid kit and a set of emergency tools in the trunk of my car (but let's be honest- the tools are really for whoever I can reach on my cell phone to come help me. rolleyes *Hopeless*) I also have at least one spare pair of shoes in my trunk (Houston is very prone to flash flooding.) I also have a flashlight, duct tape, a key map, a compass, and two Bibles (a paper version with both Testaments and a set of audio CDs of the New Testament if anyone is wondering why 2). With my sense of navigation, the Bibles will help me far more than the compass. wink My home kit is in shambles atm. Almost everything in the first aid kit was expired. The rain gear is torn. I can locate about half of my important papers. Much work to do. At least my flashlight works. *Sigh*. As for my purse, *giggles* 7 tubes of lipstick and absolutely nothing that would save me if the world comes to an end. At least I will look good. 4laugh (I may have to go snatch Sunset's purse. ninja )

Went and bought a welder today, set it up right away and laid my first bead of weld down. Not pretty...but sturdy enough for me to wail on the pieces of metal that i welded together with an 8 pound sledge hammer and have the original steel bend without breaking the weld. Now it's all about the practice...and getting a better freaking welding mask so i don't end up blinding myself. (the one it came with is absolutely awful and i can't stand it so i didn't use it...probably a mistake considering i saw spots for a good 20 minutes afterwards) So tomorrow i'm going to be in the garage in between loads of laundry playing with chunks of scrap metal until my welds look half decent. Kind of want to see what i can weld to other stuff..like what if i weld some chairs together...or a table that holds my circular saw upside down so i can use it as a table saw..that might be possible. or a larger workrest for my bandsaw so that i can cut more accurately without worrying about pieces falling off of the work surface. Possibilities=unlimited so long as its made of steel i will weld it to something else made of steel.
there may be horror stories of stupid welding experiments in the near future.

Also i took note that i need to do some updating to my car kit and my 72 hour kit because since i got the van i never put everything back in that i used to carry in the car. Thinking about ditching the rear seats in the van because i never have more than 3 passengers so the extra seats are unnecessary. My 72 hour kit is a little more end of the worldy than necessary so i need to make it more practical and less like something they would be carrying in the apocalypse.

LOL, Dragon! It's like weightlifting every time I lift that thing! Lipstick used to be made from waxes, oils, and pigments---wonder if a small wick would make you a candle? That could be a better thing than you think!

And Plague, DEFINITELY don't wait on that welding mask. It's not worth losing your sight, regardless of how anxious you are to be a great welder. My left eye actually has a "blind spot," caused by a kid (who was old enough to know better) shining a laser pointer at me in Walmart years ago. All the small welding I've ever done couldn't do to me what that stinking laser did in a couple of minutes. We thought it would eventually heal, but, no. So be careful.

I realized that I don't have some really practical things in the car, like basic sewing supplies and a couple of extra manual can openers. Looks like those could come in handy for trades, if necessary. And not one of us has packed a little water purification straw! The son who is in college several hours away is thinking about a bike trailer, to carry the 3-legged weimie and all his food and water if they need to bug-out. He and the dog take a 4 1/2 mile hike twice a day, and he bikes to school, which is almost 5 miles one way, so they're both pretty fit. Which makes me wonder about the animals here......anyone here who would take their pets with them? What would you take just for them, and would you take extra supplies to trade?

Okay, maybe I"M getting a little apocalyptic myself.

Getting ready for one of those maybe/maybe not winter storms here today. Shouldn't amount to much, or last long, but you never know, so I cooked and stockpiled water and topped up all the stuff we use, just in case.

Sorry for the post and run, but I just signed up to a university that does distance/online courses. Going to start simple with a writing course and then get all the math, physics, chemistry, calculus, biology and English I need get my Bachelors. Omg so much ahead. burning_eyes

I also went skiing today. It was soup! And there was a little mousie at the door eating the bird food. Cats quite enjoyed that.

I decided since no one will hire me due to my lack of public speaking and self confidence, that I will work on it, by volunteering at the Aquarium.

the 9 hour training yesterday was brutal. @_@ first 4 hours were alright the last 5hrs I thought I was going to be too burnt out to drive home.
