Instead of putting the items out individually and just making them expensive premium items, they instead make it something you only get by chance. Thus, we're paying Gaia to gamble for an item when we're not even guaranteed to get it in the first place. What's more, a lot of online games these days have "chance" options that allow you to get better stuff, but only as just that: chance. So even if paying members are privileged members, they still have to be bottom piled in that way. The problem is, games are adopting a casino approach now and I don't like. It's going to bring about some type of corruption in the long run, I can already see that.

At the risk of beating a dead horse, the site is branded an "online hangout." They don't have donation items anymore, they have monthly collectibles. It's a business. Show me a business that says they don't want to make money and I'll show you a liar.
Donation Items (er... Monthly Collectibles) used to be $2.50 a pop. I think I paid 4000 Gold for a December letter in 2004. I don't even want to know what the gold cost is now. Then there was the Cash Shop, followed by Evolving Items, which have quickly taken over due to the fact that they cost more and people want them. And now you can get people to plunk down ten bucks on a pack of items that may not net them a damn thing.
It's a rather brilliant business strategy, considering the target audience, particularly now with the availability of cash cards.
