You can disable the bottom bar from your Account Settings - I think it's the third or fourth option down the left side.

I did, but I actually liked the link to the GIM and my mail notification on the little bar up top >< I just don't like things that pop up or drop down all over the blooming page stare makes it too easy for me to accidentaly click on the wrong darn thing
