"Stop it, you're making me feel terribly inferior." With a quick grin, Marcus began eating. It was rather good, and he made a mental note to never fire this cook.
"You needn't have married her in the first place," came the Duchess's stiff reply. "Why did you, while we're on the subject?"

Terryn placed her hand on her chest apologetically. "Forgive me, it is not my fault that I can not stop doting on him."
"Because, I-" The earl stopped for a moment, looking a little dazed. "Well, she-" He blinked. "Well I do not quite remember right now but there was something."

Marcus nodded morosely. "No, no. I understand."
The Duchess inhaled. As a grandmother, she was used to having that 'I told you so' feeling, and after many years of practice, had sufficiently repressed it. "She could be quite the asset. She certainly isn't a fool."

"Yse that is true..." The earl rethought her words and raised an eyebrow. "Wait. An asset? What do you mean?"

Where, precisely, had her charisma gone? "I mean..." hesitated the Duchess, "She would be helpful in making beneficial financial decisions. Since she is, after all, rather shrewd, and unlike you, is not an optimist."

"Oh..." The earl sunk back in his chair. "I suppose so. Even though I do not think forcing my daughter out of the house to cut back on food and service expensives was all that beneficial a proposition."

The Duchess patted him on the shoulder. "Terryn was bound to leave home sooner or later," she consoled. "Half the girls her age are already wed with children."

((hey, shouldnt you be at school?))
The earl nodded, but frowned. "I know...but it is hard. After we were left alone, we really depended on each other. It was difficult enough trying to adjust to Serina moving in, but with Terryn leaving..." He sighed. "You know me. I am a creature of habit. I like things as they are."

OOC: Winter break!
The Duchess nodded. "Oh, Terryn would never abandon you. And with Marcus traveling more than half the year, I wouldn't be surprised if you needed to keep her room as is."

((ooo thats right...evil...))
The earl gave a small smile. "Perhaps you are right. Just..." He waved her over and lowered his voice to whisper to her. "In all honesty I would prefer my estate to go to her when I am gone, not to Serina."

The Duchess paused. "But you well know that estates cannot be given to daughters. Son-in-laws, however..." She stopped there, wondering if she'd possibly been overly forward.

The earl raised an eyebrow. "Yes...there are son-in-laws..." He rubbed his temples, shutting his eyes for a moment. "Do you really suppose that they may have...?"

"I think that we should not exclude it from our list of possibilities." The Duchess tactfully let the pause linger, and continued, "And I also think that we should treat it as a certainty as time goes on. You have seen the two of them together, have you not?"

The earl nodded slowly. "That I have. But I still...I do not know. I still find it hard to believe that Terryn would do something like that. At least not this soon."

"You seem to be a good enough judge of your daughter," answered the Duchess, biting on her lip in a very slight, unladylike manner. "You were right, after all, in seeing that she was not with child. Perhaps they will not return married." She began to drum her fingers along the side of the chair she was sitting in. "But I do believe it was Marcus's intentions to propose to Terryn on their little...vacation."
