The man's eyes widened as he heard that she was married. Seemed like an interesting prospect. His thoughts shifted, however, when Marcus whispered to him. It was no fun if she was already marked in such a way. He dropped his hand to his side and sneered at the couple. "Well, my love, if this duke of yours ever displeases you, then you know who to call upon to rectify the situation." He gave her a rather unsavory grin and walked away, tapping her lightly on the behind as he walked past.

Terryn had a desire to throw her shoe at the man's retreating head, but refrained from doing so only to avoid ruining a perfectly good shoe. Instead she pulled out her handkerchief and wiped off her hand on it, making a note to throw it out later. She glanced over at Marcus with a frown. "I suppose now I should thank you for saving me from a rather unsavory situation and then be expected to allow myself to be wooed by your bravery or something."

Marcus frowned. She was horribly prejudiced against men. And too judgemental for his taste. "Though I'm sure Gran would be pleased, I decline," he said, lowering his eyes and turning away.

Terryn sighed, reaching out to place her hand on his shoulder and hopefully stop him from walking away. "While I doubt my opinion will change much, I do admit I have been rather rude to you, and for that I am sorry." She dropped her hand and gave him a resigned sort of look. "After all, you did help me considerably, and I am grateful." It was difficult for her, very difficult, but she managed to muster a half-smile for him.

[Me neither. D: Leaving the party probably wasn't the smartest of ideas...]

OOC: Maybe she could come back for something she forgot?

"There's no need for gratitude. You helped me as much as I did. If I hadn't come out here, there's a very good chance I'd be crippled," he confided, his eyes looking through the window and at the woman, who was now causing another gentleman great pain. "But while we are being...noble, if you'd like to call it that, I apologize for being rude to you."

Here, Gran came out to spy on the two of them, and cursed herself for walking in on what looked like a rather private moment. Terryn's hand was on his shoulder, and from what Gran had heard, she was a very cold and self content girl. She'd certainly seemed to warm up to Marcus. "I do apologize for disrupting you," she said graciously. "We'd just wondered where you'd wandered off too. Carry on, by all means." And with a swoop of her dress, she disappeared back indoors.

Marcus almost laughed out loud. "Well. Now you've gone and done it," he told Terryn, gesturing to her hand.

Terryn quickly dropped her hand to her side. "Wonderful..." She sighed and glanced at the two elders, who were now chatting excitedly and glancing at the pair like they were schoolchildren spreading a rumour. She sighed. It was happening again and would end up like it usually did, with her blowing him off and her father being disappointed yet again, though it was no comparison to the wrath of Serina.

"It appears we have found ourselves in a conundrum." She took a seat on the bench again, not taking the lady like precautions to sit up straight or cross her legs at the ankles. She crossed her right leg over her left at the knee and slouched over, her elbow in her thigh and her head perched in her hand. "I know my father, he will be interrogating me to no end about this."

"And my grandmother," agreed Marcus. "She's never been as serious about getting me a wife than she is now. Before, I could have just told her that I didn't like the girl anymore, and she'd just be miffed, but now...I truly believe that she'd be furious if I don't at least have some sort of...long-term relationship--Wait! That's it. We can pretend to...be involved. And then, when your father and Gran are satisfied that we really have tried our best to make it work, we'll...break it off," he said delicately. The prospect of appearing to be involved with Terryn wasn't exactly repulsive either. It would be yet another trophy to add to his collection.

Maybe not repulsive to him. She gave him an "Are you kidding?" sort of look and scoffed. "I highly doubt that would work out." Terryn wondered just how many times he pulled that trick, with how many women. He probably thought of it as a game. Lure in a resisting young beauty with a quick witted plan, woo her, then break her heart. Well it was awfully hard to break someone's heart if they didn't have one to begin with.

Terryn stood up, her arms crossed over her chest as she contemplated the idea. The more she thought, the worse an idea it sounded. She could never possibly in her life imagine ever being the least bit attracted to a machismo type such as himself. A flirtatious playboy, she had already decided this was his personality, and she would be damned if she allowed herself to give in to such a frivolous game of emotions and hormones.

"Well then. You'll just have to face your father and tell him, yet again, that no one but a vulgar drunk fancies you," he said, his voice eloquent and sarcastic at the same time. "I can't see a problem with it. But if you'd rather not, I understand completely, and I wish you the very best of luck in dealing with Lord Arvin."

Terryn rolled her eyes. "It is not so much my father I worry about...it's that despicable witch I am forced to call my stepmother." Not feeling like divulging her life story to this man, she sighed resignedly. "I will do this only because Serina has been threatening to send me to a nunnery, and I think my father is breaking down. Besides, it would not bode well to lose the favor of your family."

Emotionlessly, she glanced at him, a neutral expression on her face, though it was closer to a frown. "But we must go about it with tact. It would not do to simply enter the room again, hand in hand, and announce our engagement."
PostPosted: Thu Aug 31, 2006 8:03 pm

"Of course not. I never agreed to get engaged to you," he pointed out. The thought of engagement itself made him inwardly shiver. But then he shrugged. "But I see your point. What do you suggest is our next...action?"

Terryn thought for a moment. "Correspondence...." She was never one for courting rituals, but she had read about them, studied them passionlessly as though it were a mere science. "I suppose you should express your desire to write me a letter or see me in some form." She sighed. "It will not be easy. I will have to resist for a while or my father will know that we are attempting to fool him."
PostPosted: Thu Aug 31, 2006 8:14 pm

Marcus laughed. "Absolutely not. Correspondence is very much unlike me. I don't write letters in order to court a woman. Gran would get suspicious. I refuse."

"Well then you think up a plan." Not giving a thought to the fact that others were around, Terryn layed down on the bench, closing her eyes and rubbing at her temples, her legs dangling of the side of the seat. "How exactly do you go about courting women? Besides getting them drunk that is."
