Nereida's eyes fluttered open as if she had been in a dream. Everything became so clear now as her mind, body, and soul had connected with the water. Feeling everything from the fish as they made their way through the currents, to every rock the water touched upon. Then she remembered the Dire rat who was scrambling within the water. Her mind also whispered of something else further down blocked out by boulders, trees that she couldn't touch upon no matter how determined she tried. Her first attempt connecting with her gift had been quite rewarding in any case.

Turning to Russet Fawn she spoke calmly, "I saw everything that flowed within the river itself, the fish, the way the water flows, and someone in need right now".

The further thing away caused Nereida to prickle with sweat though she couldn't be sure if it was a predator or not. All she focused on right now was a Dire Rat in need of help.

Turning to the others who stood searching by the river's edge she spoke, "There is a creature in need if we head to the right, everyone. I couldn't tell if there was any of those resurrected things but I saw a Dire Rat scrambling in the river from something. I did sense something much larger further down but, there's no telling if it was one of those things".

Wondering if Russet Fawn was coming along she offered the invitation, "You are welcome to join me. Past what the river told me I'm just following my intuition right now".

Then she headed right,t down the stream knowing full good danger lied ahead of all of them. Her main concern was finding the Dire rat, right now.

Sweetpea yelped as the beast's teeth raked her leg, but she wasn't going to be brought down that easy. With its head still near, she reached down and tried to grab a chunk of its flesh with her own teeth.

"Leave! Her! Alone!"

She only hoped that the few of them were enough against this monster.

Searching for the trail - 6+1 = 7

Indira was doing her best, scrutinizing the bank of the river. The predators had to have gone somewhere. You couldn't just vanish with six noulicorns. She let out a sharp breath, annoyed.

She nodded to Cinder. "Nothing here, either. They can't have vanished though. Too many hooves for that to have happened." She returned to her careful scouring for clues.

As Nereida called for the searcher's attention, her ears pinned back. "I wouldn't waste the time on a rat." She spat into the water, her distaste more than evident. "We must find the tracks, to discover where they have taken Brightheart and the others." She shook her head, nearly dislodging her faery passenger and continued her search. The life of at least one Ascended was at stake. Some rat splashing in the water didn't rank on her worries at this point.

Owlheart smiled at Indira, Fleet and Samhain, hew new faery companion hadn't felt like telling her their name yet but was cuddled up to Hunts by Night, worrying over Brightheart and the others, but afraid of the beasts too.

Her new companion, Cinder, peeled away on her own to search while Owlheart stayed and thought for a moment which way would be best.

Her ears twitched towards the pale purple doe, oh, she had some idea of a way to go? "I'll go with you, it's more of an idea of a direction to head in than we had before, and if we can help someone, then all the better" she said to Nereida, "Clever to use your gift to help" she added, moving to stand by her side.

Following the Nereida to the Right
___________________

Fawn glanced at Nereida as she came back to herself after using her ability. A rat a head? And something larger further on? This made her tilt her head slightly in thought. The more eyes they could get and more clues they could get the better. Her ears flicked back as a sour look crossed her face as one seemed to dismiss the thought of finding the rat. She even gave a side glance at Indira as she spat.

"Don't have to come if you don't want to. But for Vykeli's sake don't foresake one life for another. The survivors are indeed valuable and need to be helped, but do you know where they are? Where those who have taken them went? Who's to say this rat hasn't seen something that is important." Fawn said with a grain of scold, if she had had feathers they would have been fluffed out. "Never scorn something small when it could actually be something big."

Turning away from the doe, her stance a bit tense as she strode towards Nereida and Owlheart. She gave a bit of a grin, feeling like she had just tried scolding Juniper for leaping through the Heytheria plants again.

"Shall we head on? This place has been washed free of clues. If Nereida is right, we shall find more help a head."

Without really awaiting for an answer, stiff legged Russet Fawn started towards the right, where Nereida had sensed the rat and other creature. Really she just wanted to run and hide somewhere, she wasn't one for confrontation and this made her seriously uncomfortable. As it was, there were other things that needed doing and arguing with another wasn't one of them.

At the River

Cinder spots something caught in the bank of the river to her left. One of Brightheart’s feathers!

Indira can’t seem to find any additional tracks, but her search isn’t fruitless! She spots a few drops of red blood on the far side of the river bank, heading left down the river.

Quote:
Do you head left after the trail of blood and continue searching for clues? (2d6 + WIT)

OR

Head right and join the rat race?

The Dire Rat

Nereida, Owlheart, and Russet Fawn head right down the river. It twists through the foliage for quite some time before the group spots a dire rat cleaning its paws in the river. It looks up with a startled squeak as the three noulicorns come into view. It twists with a spray of water and takes off into the bushes!

Each roll must include an in character post.

The person who rolls the highest total will win this rat!

Battling the Beast

Specterdust’s charge is true and she manages to gouge her horn into the thick front leg of the beast. It snaps its jaws around Specterdust’s neck, but her bark armor prevents it’s teeth from injuring her! Beast loses 1 HP!

Havoc charges at the beast’s other flank and knocks it off it’s balance. It swipes at him with another raking gash of it’s hoof-claws. Beast and Havoc lose 1 HP!

Dryxel slams his hooves into the beast’s back, knocking it to the forest floor. It snarls in pain and tries to twist around to slash or snap at him, but it’s injuries have weakened it and it can’t shake Dryxel’s weight. Beast loses 1 HP!

All of the beast’s thrashing made it difficult for Sweetpea to catch hold of it. As she approaches, the beast determines she’s an easier target and snaps at Sweetpea’s legs. Sweet Pea loses 1 HP!

While Indira wasn't surprised many of the others had seemingly abandoned the task at hand, she was a little irked that it was over a dire rat of all things. She took one huffy breath, and dismissed it from her mind. These noulicorns who clung to Homewood so desperately had clearly lost Grandfather Tree's guidance. And she certainly wasn't about to do that. Her eyes kept scanning and scanning. Brightheart's life might depend on ensuring each stone was carefully checked. She briefly raised her eye, just to ensure Cinder seemed to still be making progress.

While looking up, across the river something red caught her eye. She drew her breath in. Was that blood? "Cinder," Indira kept her voice low, "I'm quite sure that's blood on the other side."

Not waiting for her remaining companion, Indira carefully picked her way across the water, mindful to continue keeping an eye out for anything of more substance. Reaching the far bank, her suspicions were confirmed. It was blood. Not much of a spray, but enough. She turned back to Cinder, and gave a large nod, hoping the other noulicorn would take that as confirmation.

She could feel Samhain quaking on her back. "I-i don't like that." She could feel Fleet shifted as well. "I don't either, faery." Then they both went quiet again.

Indira kept her voice as quiet as possible. "I'd rather not have found blood, but it is better than losing the trail. Just means we have to move faster." Indira put her head down again, and did her best to follow the blood spray.

Fear spiked through Specterdust’s body as the jaws of the beast clamped on her neck. She could feel the heat from it’s breath and smell it too. A small bit of relief came flowing in as the beast was knocked down. Specterdust shook herself, saliva dripping down the bark armor that saved her neck some serious damage.

She watched as the others attacked again, Havoc took another hit but Dryxel had it pinned. She saw red as the beast zeroed in on Sweetpea and went for her legs. Not on my watch buddy, Specterdust thought to herself. She ran forward and spun about on her front legs, her back legs coiled up and then she slammed her back hooves into the beast’s face.

Nereida's mind was working like clockwork as her eyes were searching for this creature, this familiar location. She was content Owlheart joined them helping their little band grow larger should anything attack. Who was she kidding really? Her hooves were built into a scholar, not an athlete. Her mind was a genius that could literally derive enigmas, not fight horrific beasts. But, her magic was telling her where to go so with that she set out to find this rat. The thought had occurred to her it could be a mistake, a farce leading them astray. No, magic had reason if it was a gift.

She knew what she saw...

Dipping her head under some branches the three of them reached the spot her magic had whispered like the ebb and flow of the tide. Her welcome though was short-lived as the Dire Rat squeaked and took off running. For an instant, she was dumbfounded but her senses kicked in. Hearing the splash out her own hooves were headed into a chase to heaven knows where...

"Don't lose sight of it!" she called out trying her best to not lose the zig-zag of the scaly pink tail.

Havoc made a jarring body check on the beast which was truly satisfying! He managed to knock it off balance, but it also knocked the wind out of him and before he could get out of reach it gashed his flank.

"OWWWW!" He yelled as he stumbled out of range of the beastly thing. That smarted badly! Wetness trickled down his leg, and he wanted to panic. He looked at his flank and was relieved to see it was only a flesh wound. Not dying just yet!
The stinging wound and the beast gnashing on the little pink doe served to bolster his resolve to keep at it. It had several wounds, they were making an impact as a group it looked like. He barely stopped to catch his breath before leaping forward back into the fray, horn lowered, determined to interrupt it making a meal of the others.

Cinder heard some of their group peel off in pursuit of a dire rat across the river. Her mind barely considered it - no, there was a trail here that could not have simply ended. There were clues to be found. She didn't want to be distracted by a rat.

"Blood?" Cinder echoed quietly, perking up in that odd way that healers sometimes did. Blood was never a good thing, but at the same time, it meant there was a creature in need of her help, if only she could get there in time.

She quickened her pace, moving to the left in the direction that Indira had gone. "Look," she said after a moment, pausing just long enough to snag a bright feather out of the brush. "This must be one of Brightheart's feathers. This trail must be pointing the right way."

But she was fast approaching furious. She let out a guttural scream as she reared up and brought her hooves down on the the predator. It hurt her just as much as it did him, probably, but at least it did hurt him. Any damage was satisfying.

Was worse then forgetting that everything should be given a chance no matter what they were. These new creature were taking that down a different path, but everything had its place. Rounding the bend of the river she spotted the rat washing it paws.

Stopping Fawn tilted her head slightly, it seemed that their small party had been spotted and the rat dashed off. Was it hiding something? Had it seen anything and had a reason to wash something off its paws? Lurching forward she took off after the Rat.

"Hey! Wait a moment!' She called out after the rat as she went.

Owlheart snorted at the derisive gesture that Indira gave but at the same time she understood some had a lot of grievance with dire rats, they hadn't always been... more than mere vicious beasts after all, it was only recently that some had joined homewood and become helpers for the good cause of helping heal their world, rather than being an aggressive force, but hopefully this was one of the 'good' dires, it could have information, it could help lead them the right way, it was also possible the surviving nouls had split up so Indira and Cinder, whom she watched follow the other, had just as good of an idea as anyone, either way, while she'd prefer they all stayed together, finding Brightheart and the others was more important.

She smiled as she, Nereida and another doe, moved down the river towards the rat, who fled at the sight of them. "OH no.. please! WAIT, we're friendly, we need your help" she called out to them, hoping they'd listen but she couldn't help giving chase either, she COULDN'T lose sight of the rat, she had to know if it knew anything about the beasts, perhaps those creatures was why it had fled, the faery pair had hidden after all.
