His expression flickered, amusement fading somewhat without dissipating entirely. "What? Like, seriously?" She was pulling his leg, right? Everyone knew about the fire and the accompanying festival – it was annual, for crying out loud. Most Kimeti were told about it while they were still in their sacs, the informative nature of it blending seamlessly into the existing mythological tapestry. It would have taken more than absent-mindedness to avoid hearing about it well into adulthood. At least his parents had hammered the significance of the whole event into him on more than one occasion; he'd always just assumed the lessons had been the same for everyone.

Spindrift hesitated for a minute longer, scrutinizing the calm possession in the doe's face, attempting to decide if the question she posed was a legitimate one. Her previous words played again in his ears, the admission of being unlike the rest of her species. For all that it was a pretty general statement, one that he assumed even he had uttered in his lifetime, the buck had to concede to her point. "Okay..." Surreptitiously, he glanced around, prepared to let someone else take over and correct her ignorance in a more traditional fashion. But the one time he genuinely needed it, no one was near enough to eavesdrop and undercut him. It wasn't as though he had ever needed to explain something so basic before, and he found that the answers did not come readily to his tongue. "Never let it be said I didn't bow to the whims of a pretty lady." He exhaled, pondering for a moment before moving forward. "So... basically, there's this fire. It happens a lot; yearly, actually. Stuff's dry, lightning strikes or whatever, that same dry stuff goes up in flames. That's where all the smoke's coming from. It's eating up the forest, making way for, well, you know. You probably get how fires work."

He pawed aimlessly at the ground, getting the sense that he was failing utterly at this explanation thing, but continuing anyway. "The Mound is a safe zone, somewhere that the fire can't reach." Using the tip of his hoof, Spindrift sloppily inscribed the customary pair of slanted lines into the dirt. "Mound's always been here, but this year it got…" He jerked his bearded chin toward the collapsed heap to illustrate his point, the kin atop it resembling nothing so much as an overflowing anthill "Messed up. So they're – we're – fixing it. Once that's over with, everybody celebrates. Dancing, games, gorging yourself sick." He smirked, rolling his shoulders suggestively. "Frolicking in the undergrowth with someone you've taken a shine to. Whatever suits your needs."

“Hrm.” Mudlark made a non-committal sound but Shanty would surely know she was pleased by the attention despite her outwardly aloof appearance. “I don’t know why we bothered bringing the marlin. They certainly don’t need it.” Catching the huge fish had been no easy feat and she could not imagine any of these pampered roly polies having the skill and determination to bring in such prey.

Keep True gave a Story a big sisterly nuzzle. “If you can’t handle it let me know straight away.” Another encouraging nudge and Keep True turned, leading the way towards the mound. She kept Story close beside her, keeping a good distance from as many kin as she could, as if afraid they might accidentally trample her dear sister.

But Story had already been noticed by one, and as they approached the mound, another set of eyes found the pretty little Acha…

As his halting explanation began, she listened intently, ears flicking forward and keen eyes never leaving his face. Even with her lack of experience with her own kind, she could tell the buck was definitely surprised at her lack of knowledge on this particular ritual. Did many of these sorts of gatherings happen? She had at first thought Kimeti to be fairly solitary creatures, having never come across any groups so large, but the way they had come together today, belied that. Perhaps it depended; she decided after a moment, as each was their own creature after all.

Her focus only faltered once, her expression momentarily exasperated at his longer than necessary explanation of the fire. Yes, she knew what fire was and how it worked. Otherwise she would be running around, burning in it by now. But she didn’t say a word and the look was gone so soon one could wonder if it had actually been there.

When the buck had finally gotten to the end of the explanation, Swarm nodded. “I see…” Her gaze shifted past him to the mound. The first part was understandable. When your home was broken, you all came together to fix it. That was how a hive behaved. The revelry afterwards was harder to get her head around. That was what was missing most from the Kimeti knowledge.

“I will take part.” She announced after some time spent in thought. “Show me what to do.” There was another thoughtful pause in which she looked almost amused. “Minus the frolicking.”

"Just think how impressed they must be," meticulously sleeking down the locks she had messed up, "to know what incredible feats the Tidewalkers achieve on a regular basis. And doesn't it just behove us to bring the better part of a trade?" Task immaculately completed, she bounded off a side to snap a round, perfect plum by the stem - a rakish nod and a wink as thanks to the Kimeti who guarded it - from a stockpile of glistening fruits, laying it on a dry root before her sister with a flourish: "The sweetest plum for my sweetest plum. Let's make merry before we're called to work again." A dazzling smile that belied the fact she knew her darling Mudlark was incapable of making merry, with so many Swamp Kin to judge.

Story afforded a shy, loving smile at Keep True's caress, nodding at her instruction and keeping at her flank, head down. She was so industrious at avoiding eye contact in her fear of incurring attention, she failed to notice a rather familiar - certainly unforgettable, with the buds and leaves that decorated his coat - figure of a Kimeti amidst the crowd. How wide would her eyes have grown, what sound squeezed from her throat, if she had seen his gaze upon her? The only soul alive who knew her secret, on a collision course with the dearest to her heart, who did not - at this mound where all paths crossed twice, thrice, surely it was only a matter of time before they met.

Aaaaah I am so happy to see Thaw here! 8D Story and Keep True are gonna run into Watch Me and learn about the Acha troupe, so Thaw being around could motivate some great RP developments, since Story certainly wouldn't mention she sings... >D

Lost's face twisted up into a bright smirk. "Because I'm so in tune with the swamp." She nodded. She would find the biggest rock- even if it wasn't the heaviest- and that would be that. Yep. She was that amazing. Oh, but she'd have to find it somewhere in the clearing. She might never find her way back otherwise...

Throughout the grooming she remained perfectly still, the ritual comforting and familiar, and once it was finished, the doe stood even prouder than before. A hint of an affectionate smile blossomed on her face once Shanty had returned. "You can be merry enough for the both of us." She devoured the plum daintily, until there was only a red stained pip and stem left behind on the ground. "Shall we meet our spoilt cousins then?"

It was an area that had mostly been finished, just needing a few finishing touches to make it perfect, and she was keen to begin. “Lets get-“ She never got to finish her sentence.

Smoldering Reverie's smile instantly seemed to soften at the introduction to Only the Ashes Remain. So this was the sweet brother whom Killing Moon obviously favored, the one who had gifted him silent, strong Echo who rustled through the bushes to emerge with loyalty at Killing Moon's side. At that thought, Ember wondered where the beautiful eaglehound was, for although she had barely spent more than a few moments in her presence, the quiet familiar had left an impression on the doe. Used to silence and solitude, she sometimes wondered what it would be like to have a constant companion by her side. But, regardless, here before her was her dear friend's family, and the brother she had already heard of, with so striking a name she could not help but take a step closer, which took her even closer to Killing Moon, but her intent was all the same. If she was a smoldering ember, all the potential of a fire caught in wait, she was also all the potential to fall apart into ashes and she was always helpless to resist those who shared the fire-wrought end that had touched her heart in her naming dream.

"Only the Ashes Remain," she said, soft, testing the name out on her tongue and finding it tasting of slightly acrid smoke, yet it was intoxicating all the same. She paused, though, before continuing. She was not one to use nicknames and had never received one from The Killing Moon in regards to his name, nor would she have used it even if he had for his name was too beautiful to destroy, but he had given one for his brother, perhaps preferred to the perfect clarity of his swamp-given name. So she began again, against her natural inclination towards dream names, with "Left."

"It is a pleasure to meet you, for The Killing Moon speaks very fondly of you." And in some odd way, she wanted to thank the buck for Echo, but that was rather out of her reach and so she settled on a smile, gentled and tempered in comparison to the one that had graced her face as she had spoken her first nervous words to the family.

But truly, the test of her nerves was when Killing Moon's father spoke, with strange glee that seemed to just overflow from the buck. She had quite nearly bounded away in the face of his energy, unused to anyone speaking with such enthusiasm, more adapted to the gentle warmth that Killing Moon offered and even the sparse words of gladness from Flickering that defined her interaction with kin during the winter. This buck overwhelmed her and when he finally finished speaking, she didn't know how to reply with only the desire to remain with Killing Moon keeping her from shrinking back into the ashes that coated the ground.

And he had only stopped speaking, really, she suspected, because of the buck at his side, who, much to her relief, seemed much calmer and less intimidating. Again, she didn't know what to say though, for it was true, yes, that she was Ember, but she was fairly certain she didn't understand what he meant by his thanks. But for Killing Moon's sake, she nodded, her smile slightly tenser than the one she had given Left and more awkward by many tail lengths than the one that she had given Killing Moon, and spoke, as quiet as ever, "Well met, Rise and Fell. It is a pleasure to meet The Killing Moon's family."

All the remained was the grim, smirking buck who had not spoken a single word yet but seemed to be judging her as she stood next to his brother.

Cornice was starting to really question the overexcited doe's eyesight and if she were one to sneer openly in company, she would have been at this time. She never showed this sheer overflow of emotion and she never came close to feeling anything that was even remotely close to it, let alone the fact that the color of her and Precious' pelts where completely different, Precious definitely took after his father in pelt color, and the doe hadn't even seemed to notice Savager or Caution until Edge had pointed it out. It was as if her eyesight were completely deficient except in finding kin to subject her company to. If mother was completely exasperated by the doe, son, on the other hand, seemed to be amused by her.

The other was being stupid, and it made the little lamb want to laugh at the absurdity of her smiles and constant chatter. His little heart rarely felt more than disregard for others and absolutely devotion for Momma. Though he was entertained for the moment, he also found that he would dislike spending any extended time with her and would much prefer if Momma found someone more quiet than her who smiled less, which, quite frankly, was kind of scary. The lamb always preferred Momma when she wasn't smile, smiling meant that she wasn't being truthful. Despite his silent wishes, Momma spoke to the doe, and the lamb realized this must be a lesson, to be polite even to kin you don't like.

"Yes, he is part Totoma. They do not lay down sacs, rather, Totoma are born ready to be warriors with thick pelts and soon enough, their head and backplates develop. It has been nearly half a moon since his and his sisters' births."

The questions were answered succinctly, with little elaboration for Cornice was finding that she could find no value in cultivating a relationship with this doe.

A very particular class of agony, not unlike prodding at an open wound (which, yes, he was one of those with a bad habit of) to see how it would sting. He did not trust the gentle way she mouthed his full name - oh, he did not doubt the sentiment genuine: he mistrusted her seeming affinity for it the way he deeply resented his very own dream. But he was careful to keep that rictus of a smile across his lips, single-minded in his mission to a. ensure Killing Moon never suspected a thing of his crumbling world and b. make a good impression on his beloved brother's doe friend no matter what he privately thought of her. And so single-minded he was, his heart barely skipped a beat at her mention of Killing Moon's fond words of himself (he filed that thought away for some other time) - moving only when her momentary speechlessness made it obvious Dad was doing it again and his unbounded enthusiasm for potential progeny was terrifying her.

"Daaad," he started, horrifyingly chipper, "look - the Tidewalkers have brought a gigantic preserved marlin! You and Uncle Fell had better go take a look, huh? Maybe we could pick up a few tips, they must know all about salt. We'll take care of things here - go represent our proud tribe, Dad!"

Shanty fairly whooped at Mudlark's invitation, galloping a circle around her before coming to a canter at her flank, nudging her ahead, "Let's shall! We'll show them what they've been missing." She tossed a stray lock back and peered about the busying Kin with open curiousity, "See anyone who interests you, darling? There're all sorts here right now."

WAAAAAAAAHHHH!!! exploded in her head, but her voice as it was could never make a sound so big. Instead, she stood stock-still, drawn back into herself, blue eyes huge and quivering, lips set in the smallest, tightest line imaginable as if to keep the scream within her core. W-what could this huge, bright, loud Kiokote want with her?! What had he said? P-p-p-perfect? There must have been some sort of mistake.

WOO IT'S BORDERWALKERS TIME. I think Phoe is gonna throw a couple of hers in, and Morphy and Lolli are of course welcome too!

"Watch your step, Sandwalker." The soothing voice came from behind the branching roots of a mangrove at the same time its speaker did, her own silvery-white legs stepping forward slowly. "Just because there isn't sand underfoot doesn't mean there's no danger." Meets-the-Sea smiled and joined her daughter in watching the scene before them, her fanned tail swaying lazily back and forth behind her. Meets was not always the most outwardly affectionate mother and she had always been wandering in and out of her children's lives as they were growing up -- their aunts Desert Spring and Many Voices might seem more of a mother figure to them than Meets herself at times -- but she genuinely loved and cared for her children and her tribe.

"Are you hungry from our journey? There seems to be more than enough food to go around." The mare was a little shocked at the bounty, to be honest -- she had almost forgotten that not all kin lived as she and her family did, off the sparse life to be found in the borderlands. And after the flood, and the strange winter, and the annual fires there was still so much food! She almost didn't know where to look.
